some one on Belug.be posted this Ebay offer :

http://cgi.ebay.com/Massive-Lego-Auction-M...bayphotohosting

this must be one of the most impressive collections i have ever seen, and personnaly, i think this guy ought to be shot for selling it! :-P

just take a good look at what's there: monorails, classic town sets in MISB and nearly mint condition, space, star wars,... whatever...

and only for 42500 dolars!

i think he could have sold this this for a lot more with a little bit of patience... he should have sold this in smaller lots and seperate sets...

Oh.... my.... gawd!

"Hi, about that mortgage we talked the other day. Does it have to be for house..?"

WHO would buy a collection for a freaking 42,500.00$ *wacko*

I would...

A rich lucky bastard :-P

Oh... ok... not me, then...

Thats one beutifull collection. Wish a had 47500$ to spent.

I also think he could get a lot more for the sets if he sold them one by one.

*yoda*

i would too... but it kinda exceeds my monthly lego budget... :'-(

I wouldn't hehe

I'd rather have 2 nice Porsches (a classic '75 911 and a '93 964 Carrerra 2) rather than that collection, but its just me ;-)

*yoda*

how did he end up with $42k of lego in the first place?!?! *wacko* *wacko*

well that's not so difficult. if you had a shop in the past or if you started your collection a few years back when lego sw was still a dream instead of reality... and with quite a lot of money...

Resell it and you can buy 5 Porsches ;-)

Frankly, I find more than half the fun to be in searching for bargains, buying, waiting for the box to arrive, building (some of them), etc.

Buying it all at once eliminates most of the fun.

True, but I still wouldn't mind having them all at once. :-P

But yeah, while all those sets might be worth what he's asking, I don't know if anyone in the Lego community would want to dish out that much money for them, even if you could sell them for a lot more. I guess we'll see though...

I understand what you mean. In this case, though, the fun is in going thru the pile and find out what exactly you got for your second (or third) mortgage - and explain it to the best wife of all ;-)

i think money is a major part of it. having a shop though still doesn't really explain having a $42k hobby. if he is an eccentric millionaire, why sell now?

I am not saying it is operative in this particular auction, which coudl easily be a shop owner, or thieving employee thereof, but I think think the following sequence happens to a lot of people, with variations.

They start out small, rediscovering a childhood love, from the point of view of an adult with spare money.

They get increasingly obsessed. They buy, initially build, then just collect.

Over several years they really go crazy, buy more than they need, can't stop buying (especially when they see something they KNOW is a bargain")

They build up a massive space consuming collection.

Increasingly they fall behind building/cataloging/sorting the Lego (whatever they do with it)

The boxes pile up

Guilt over wasted money piles up.

At some point they look around and realize that their "hobby" is not sensible, they can't build or use all they bought, there is no more room to put it. Look at that room! Where does that person sleep? What could they do with all that Lego

If they are calm, they gradually sell it off, keep a cherished fraction. Some, however, over-react and sell the whole thing off at once.

Also, I think many of us go through phases when Lego is not as attractive as it seemed a few months before, usually when there are other stresses. This waxes and wanes. However, again some people over-react during the low periods, and oversell their collection.

Just my attempt at pop psychology.

no i mean, maybe he had a toy shop several years ago and decided to quit with it for whatever reason and didn't bother to sell his last stock ... or perhaps he loved lego and kept a few boxes for himself every time... in any case, there are some sets you just don't find in that condition anymore, not even on BL, like a boxed Garage 361,... 8-

"Hi, about that mortgage we talked the other day. Does it have to be for house..?"

It would be for a house. Several houses, in fact. Just not a normal "human can live in" house.

I was going to type "not a house made of bricks" then realised!

Maybe not a house made using cement?

well this guy is maybe a prehistorical afol X-D Look at all those old sets. If he bought those during the 80's, the it makes 30 years of lego collecting addiction, at 1500 euros per year (see the other thread, average amount spent on lego) and taadaaaa, you got the collection we'll all end up with in 25 years. Some of us might even go faster than this.

I think gylman made some sort of a nice analysis, but I am not sure about the "gradually selling at the end" aspect of it.

What amazes me are the piles of unbuilt sets this guy has. It's just like those people who are collecting cars and are not driving them... Useless !

Posted

imagine you having to sort all those parts from all those sets first , then having to rebuild all sets before you can put this collection on ebay! g... should be a huuuuuge pile of bricks! :-P :-X

Hm, no one bought his second auction, either. And he even reduced his asking price by $2500...

;-)

your link leads to the 40000dollar bid... don't see the second bid...

still, if he were to sell sets seperately, i'd be interested in several, unfortunately, he only ships to US residents. that doesn't improve his case, since, in my experience, mostly Europe is interested in Legoland sets...

That is the second auction. Your link was his first auction (at $42500/$47500).

still, if he were to sell sets seperately,

From what I read in the description he intends to do so if his two all-in-one-auctions fail - which they did.

i'd be interested in several, unfortunately, he only ships to US residents. that doesn't improve his case, since, in my experience, mostly Europe is interested in Legoland sets...

Lucky me has a sister-in-law in the States :'-)

the question is are you lucky enough to have a sister-in-law who is willing for you to use her address (and storage space) to hold $42,000 worth of lego. that's probably a space larger than a 10x10 room. :-) not to mention the difficulty you will have in shipping all that to europe. rent a container? :-P

Hehe

I'm not interested in the entire collection, just parts of it which use a lot less space :-P

And yes, she's willing to let me use her address. I've done it in the past, and not just once :-P

As for the shipping: Delsey and Samsonite are companies that can help with "family sized containers". And since Mrs Hobbes and I visit at least once a year, my parents-in-law visit at least once a year (this year twice), and sister-in-law visits us at least once a year, that's 3 to 4 trips a year which make logistics a piece of cake :-P

So, there :-P

still, chances are that every one will bid on these sets once they're seperated, prices will go up... so we'll just see how this story develops... and maybe... just maybe ... i'll go and a find me a good American friend I can take advantage of... :-P
