I just picked up 10195 on Friday and feared the worse as I pulled each bag from the bottom of the box, anticipating the horribly wrinkled sticker sheet and instruction booklet until I found this.

3 Instruction books on a cardboard backing with the sticker sheet all encased in plastic.

Never have I seen this before. Have you?

Yes, this is a new official trend for instructions and stickers, and we should see it on all of the 2011 sets from this point forward. There was a LEGO press release, or perhaps interview, that mentioned that LEGO would now start doing this to avoid the rampant crumpled sticker and instructions problem.

Yes, currently only for sets of $100 and up, but that is supposed to change soon.

Sets less than $100 don't really need this. Most sets beneath that price have small enough instructions not to get horribly crumpled.

It's for sets 800+ parts and I do believe that any set with stickers should be given a cardboard to prevent the stickers from getting messed up.

I know for a fact that LEGO Quality is still working on and considering solutions for the "crumpled" instructions issue.

This cardboard thingy is only a temporary solution - not permanent.

By plastic trays do you mean something like the Death Star playset or Taj Mahal?

No, I mean like in the Droid Developer kit where there's a plastic tray with a compartment for each bag and the Constructopedia (instructions) slides underneath.

It's a step in the right direction. My King's Castle instructions last year were an absolute mess, and most new sets I've bought in the last few years have had curved, creased or crumpled instruction booklets. No problems back in the 80s & 90s...
