I've just joined the Pirate ranking system. Kudos to Mister Phes for setting that up. I think its a great idea.

I was thinking that other themes could follow that example. Personally, I'd love a "theatre" ranking system. It could work something like:

- Sidekick

- Apprentice

- Superhero

- Jedi

Space has obvious potential.

What do we all think. Our respective ranks would then show to which specific theme's we're inclined personally. For example, I post mostly in "theatre" because I love SW. But I also have small collections of pirates and castle. And I really like my Space LEGO. So in theory, I'd have a (relatively) really high rank for theatre and mediocre rank for space and a low rank for pirates / castle.

i've no intention to set up an actual ranking system in a space subforum, unless a fair number of people would really want one (even tho we already have created something similar that's not public yet ;-) ) It kinda makes things rather complicated and it's time consuming to follow it up, however, if there's interest for it, why not? i'd have to ask jp to set it up in terms of software but let's see how the pirates sub goes first, once that's on cruisin' speed, i'll kidnap jp for a while so we can spend some quality time dealing with some loose ends of the subspace sproject :-P

I'm pretty neutral. The only problem I see is finding people to be in charge of it. Someone has to keep track and actually "do" something with it. If there's no "incentive" then it'd be just another "title".

I think we should go for tags which would display a particular interest in one or two themes. But a ranking for every forum seems a bit complicated to follow.

Not intended to be childish, just another bit of fun. Another element to the EB experience. I like the pirate system and assuming it proves effective, don't see wh it couldn't be incorporated into other themes.

I have seen many a forum become entangled in stupid fights about post counts, rank, seniority, etc etc. I'm just afraid this will detract from the casual friendly atmosphere here.

I'm just talking about it for a bit of fun. Nothing serious and I take your point that if it became serious it could very negatively affect EB.

This said if a new member came on board wanting to know about certain themes or sets he might see [captain tau is highly ranked in theatre - useful to ask about SW (for example), but he's low ranked in castle, which is my favourite so I'll ask someone else about that]. You see?

I don't think we should. It sounds nice and all, but like many said already: too many downsides. It also isn't necessary for showing which themes you are "best" at. People will simply ask a question in the theatre forum. Those who don't know much about theatre likely won't go to that forum anyway. And if they will, the likely won't answer since they don't know the answer ;-)

i agree, i don't like all of this ranking talk. and i personally think the pirate forum is in way too deep. but then again, the pirate forum is really exploding right now. only time will tell. so for now, i guess i just don't know :'-(

i think its great to have a favorite theme, as i've noticed most of us do here. i think a simple icon under each avatar could be a cool visual graphic. kind of affiliating each member to a forum if he or she wishes. i know id like a little History & Adventure tag, and it sounds like a couple of you might like a Theater icon.

it seems a little Classic Space icon appears under a few of our members names... maybe this idea is already being fleshed out ??? if not, what does it mean ??? and sorry if this is being discussed in another thread, but i haven't seen it yet 8-|

what you're seeing underneath my name is indeed a space tag... Soon we'll have subspace on line and you can get one as well if you want, even in a different colour! ... even tho... i didn't see an indian on the moon, last time I was there... but then, that was some time ago... however, i do believe i saw a film called "Space cowboys" in the past... :-P

yep , pirate forum is going thru some rough sea, due to several changes, but it'll be great when everything is running on cruisin' speed! i applaud phes contribution to the forum, even tho it's still a bit chaotic to me as well, but it'll all work out just fine, you'll see!

I don't think every theme needs a ranking system, but one or two is fine and adds a bit of fun to seeing your avatar appear.

I like the idea of having a few different flags/insignias appear based on maybe the top three themes that a person likes, if that's possible? (like the Classic Space emblem). It's fun.

1) 1 ring to rule them all, remember? or haven't you seen this topic yet? ;-) Our first objective would be to turn Space into yet another fun and welcome corner of EB :-$

2) A tag for every different theme to your liking is no doubt a great idea. In my case, if you want a space tag, there will be a series of very difficult exams, followed by you sending all your space sets to me as a token of your appreciation for my leader ship!! :-P :-P :-P nah.. just kidding! i'll give them away, to who ever wants one... Being part of a community is not a contest, there's no race to be the first, the best, the strongest, the fastest,... it's all just for fun! *sweet*

3) We'll probably have more and different affiliates in the future, however, this is still in its very earliest stage and one that needs some very serious thinking and discussion with the community and between the staff. After all, we want to make EB better for all of us, we don't want to turn EB into a combination of smaller communities grouped under one empty banner... We should not get ahead of ourselves and step into a dynamics we can't control. we'll take our time...Also, we know that we have several darn good members out there for all sorts of themes. But we'll focus first on pirates, then space and then we'll see..; right, chief(s)?

I prefer to make it clear from the begining : tags will be reserved to great contributors of each specific forum and will be limited at 2 per personn (otherwise it'd take too much space...space ! come on that was funny ! :'-( )

Just a further thought, not to argue:

Would a ranking system ceate unnecessary and unproductive competition, or would be an incentive system to get more members posting and actively discussing as a result?

we already observed that ranks only creates competition and drag spamming kids in... So, even though your thought is logical, it doesn't happen this way (unfortunatly !) ;-)

currently, snefore (and others) have a space tag... which works cause it seems to cover both a THEME and a FORUM. same goes for pirates. but what about the "theater" and "history" forum (along with others)... which both cover mulitple themes ???

that is to say, should there be a batman, starwars, sponsebob, avatar, spiderman, castle, adventuers, wild west, and vikings tag, etc...

or simply, "theater" and "history" tag ???

any thoughts ???

Yep, it would still be cool. But, the truth is most people wouldn't have a clue what "Lego History and Adventure" means.
