Busy collecting for my baby so when he grows up he can build these Lego sets, do people buy 1 or 2 sets to play and collect them also?

I have a problem that way. If I buy one set, I build it and that's it (I may make some modifications, but generally it's the LEGO set - they still usually do a lot better than me). If I want one to save, I have to buy both - one to build, one to save. If I want one for parts, I have to buy two - one to build, one to use for parts. Yes, I know... it's like a mental disorder, but that's how I am.

I mean... some people save boxes. But... if that's what they want, so be it.

No. Everything I buy gets opened, built, rebuilt then taken apart and sorted into components for storage in drawers.

It's nice that you're saving stuff for your son. and good sense really given the way retired sets get hyper expensive as time rolls on.

some times i do but that can get very expensive. from time to time i do buy one for my son and keep a separate one for myself

No. I don't have money to buy 2 sets. I only buy one set, and if i don't like it i take it apart and store the pieces in the place for loose pieces (plastic container). I won't buy any set twice (only impulses and discounted sets are the exception).

I'm not a set keeper per se. Although some might stay assembled until I get to part out and sort the elements.

There's just one instance I feel the topic's question might apply: Lego games! I usually get me those I like for their play-value and some multiples for parts. This way I have collected some copies of Lunar Command, Orient Bazaar, Minotaurus and Lava Dragon...

Be well all!

Even worse, I buy sets twice 'one to play, one to keep' and usually end up not opening one at all.

Since coming out of my GIJoe Dark Ages, I always buy one figure to open up and another to keep closed. But that's GIJoe, which is WAY cheaper than Lego.

With Lego, I usually buy only one set -- or more, if the parts and pieces are nice and I plan to use them for MOCc.

But I'm not much of a Lego collector -- I play more than I collect. For instance, I display my openned GIJoe in cool positions and stuff, while keeping the closed ones safe.

But with Lego, I just open everything up and play with the whole of the bricks.

If you plan to collect, I'd advise you to buy at least two oeach set -- one to open and play, the other to keep closed and safe.

Remember that when your kid gets of age, he or she can make a fortune with closed Lego sets, wich will have become very, very hard to get.

My wallet does not allow for 2 of the same set. Although I do make the exception if it is a set I really really like, there are good parts or it is something very exclusive.

Had this problem with collecting starwars figures one to open one to keep sealed ran out of space very quickly .Stopped collecting figures now but lego has now taken over so i will be needing a bigger house

I open al the sets i buy.

Even if i buy 3, 4, 5 of the same set.

The only notable exception at the moment would be the Shinkai 6500, as the resale price on bricklink is going up fast, so i have 2 still sealed.

I typically try to buy two, unless they are on sale, then I buy three or four, with the extra sets to be parted out. I only buy duplicates for exclusives or licensed sets though, as they have a better resale value. I frequently lose the willpower to keep the sets sealed though  .

Really good sets that I latch to might last a month. I destroy sets for parts. If ever buy multiples it's either for minifigs, or parts.

No. Everything I buy gets opened, built, rebuilt then taken apart and sorted into components for storage in drawers.

I'm the same way as this. I only buy one copy, build it, and eventually dismantle it and sort all the parts into drawers. I won't buy multiples for two reasons: the monetary cost, and lack of space to store large boxes half-filled with dead air. :sceptic:

The only exception is collectible minifigures; I always seem to end up with extras I don't really want. I also can't seem to bring myself to break down the collectible minifigures - I keep them in their own little baggies once I'm done displaying them.

Nope. so far, it's only been 1 of a set and I build them. Only exception was when I got a second farmer impulse set off of lego a couple months back when I was ordering a few things.

I had been thinking about trying to track down a second one b/c I really wanted another farmer and a pig(I only had 2 farmers at that point and 1 piggie) and I figured it being on sale for 2 bucks and staying within the shipping price range I was currently at was a good bargin.

What an interesting idea.

I am a big believer in having multiple sets because so many sets have "unique" parts, so I'd rather have 5 $20 sets (and multiples of 5 of the parts) than get 1 $100 set.

When I buy a set to save it as a collectors set/investment, it is because I can only get 1 of it.

Nope, if I get multiples of a set I put them all together (except for 2 BIONICLE sets from 2009 that I plan to sell in about 10 years). I never really saw the point of keeping sets MISB, what's the point of getting LEGO if it won't be played with??

All my LEGO acquisitions are meant to be used. I do have a lot of unopened sets at the moment, but that's just because I haven't gotten around to them for one reason or another; I don't intend to keep any sets unopened indefinitely. LEGO is best appreciated by being used, IMO.

:sweet:

I do frequently buy multiples of sets when circumstances permit, but that's because I want multiples of those sets (or more specifically, I usually want multiples of the parts). A lot of those multiples are unopened, but I do plan to open them eventually, not just store them in their boxes forever.

:classic:

one and I always open it.

So there are two case in which you don't open the box :

- make profit buy selling it later

- keep for your kids

But in the second case, I don't see the benefit to keep all the box sealed. Why just keep preciously the parts and the instructions ?!

Unless TLG suddenly disappear they will have some box to open...and I think it will be more and more difficult to open old box after keeping them sealed so many years (especially if you go on BL to see the price of them).

So in my mind : sealed box -> money, open box -> pleasure

(okay money can also be pleasure but it's another topic... )

Well, used sets typically are for my use only, but if a really good sell comes along (e.g. the original Jango Fett figure). I'll sell it, and pick up as many new sets as I can with the money. It has worked out very well for me so far. I sold the original At-At for $300 in 2007 before the new ones came out, and that would have given me the ability to get three of the new ones. But, the money ended up being used on other sets, so I am currently At-At-less :sceptic: . Not that I didn't like the $300 of sets that I got in '07  .

The biggest case of multiples that I have gotten and kept sealed is a lot of 20 Clone Walker Battle Packs, but my willpower is weakening there as well. .

I was going to say that every set I buy is to open and build, but actually when the first Star Wars sets came out I was still in my 'Twilight Age' but I bought a few sets to put away as an investment. Only small sets as I could not afford much, I thought Star Wars would be a short run thing, Guess I was wrong!

Well they are now for sale on Bricklink, Star Wars isn't really my thing

D

Nah, can't really afford to. I rather use the money for another set I don't have.

With that being said though, I do have doubles of a few sets...

7638 Tow Truck - I don't actually like the set so much that I wanted to buy 2. What happened was that I had ordered it online on one store's website but had got notice it was delay. Afraid that it would likely get canceled, I bought it at another store (which had it on sale; like 10-15% off) as I waited for news of the online one. 3 days later, the one I ordered online came in the mail. Too lazy to return it, I now have 2 of them. 1 built, 1 that I haven't got around to building.

7595 Army Men on Patrol - Zellers (similar to Target in the US, but much crappier; Target exclusives usually translate to Zellers exclusives here in Canada) had this set for half price for $7.50 during one weekend so I bought one set. It's not like it's a favourite of mine or anything but I built it, and then thought it might be cool to have a squad of 8 army men (one set comes with 4 minifigures) so I went out and bought a second one. The second one I bought hasn't been opened yet still. Like the other set, haven't gotten around to building it.

10197 Fire Brigade - Ordered it from Toysrus online when they had it on sale last year. Only after I ordered did I realize I had forgotten to put in my apartment number in the shipping address (everything was filled out with building number, street name, postal code except for the apartment number). I called customer service to see if they could add it in but they weren't able to, nor were they able to cancel my order at that moment. So I asked them to just place the exact same order except with the shipping address include my apartment number. I was expecting that only my second order would be mailed to me properly while the initial order I screwed up on would just go back to Toysrus since it lacked the apartment number. A week later, BOTH of my orders ended up arriving (the courier was smart enough to see that even though one of the orders was lacking an apartment number, they were both going to the same building so he must have realized both were for me). I tried to return one of the sets in-store but because the store did not have it in their system (Fire Brigade was only sold online on Toysrus' site, not actually in-store), they said I had to mail it back to the warehouse. It was free to get shipping labels and send it back to Toysrus' warehouse but I ended up being once again too lazy to do it and just kept both of them. I also realized that if I kept one of the sets long enough without opening I could resell it later once it goes out of production. Both sets are still unopened, like the other 2 also have not had time to build yet.

scratch that, I now have 2 sets where I have 2 of the same. Mom picked up a wizard impulse set that was on sale for 3 bucks and I already had one.

The first one has been open for a while and the second(new) is still in the box. May stay that way a while. Currently, I don't really have the time for lego. :hmpf_bad:
