Big sets like Modulars are expensive, but there are alot of useful pieces, i havent get any yet and probably wont. I dont have any space where to put my sets anymore. Modulars are great for pieces, and you get alot of them, but make sure at you have some space where to put it if you want to display the set. So yes, i think for City and big set fans its worth it.

The large, modulars are what brought me out of my Lego Dark Ages. When I saw my first modular, I went "Wow, I have to have that..." I saw them in a catalog I got with Brickbeard's Bounty. I got the pirate set as a Christmas gift but nothing has moved me to create more than the modular sets.

I was fortunate enough to get them all at regular retail prices but did manage to miss Market Street somehow. (Oh yeah, I skipped market streel and bought an extra Cafe Corner...) I kick myself for not picking up every last one, and think you will too if you don't get them all.

My favorite? Emporium! Wait, no the Cafe Corner...No, it's gotta be the Fire Brigade...

See what I mean? Green Grocer it is!

Henryhotspurs, I couldn't agree more. Your story is exactly like mine. However, recently I decided to try my hand at assembling a Market Street. I did find a lot of parts for it in other sets, and in Lego PAB online. The biggest trouble was the 1x4 dark blues, but I substituted for buying 1x8 and 1x10 and 1x12 in dark blue, and 1x2 on Lego S@H PAB, and I think I have a (mostly accurate) Market Street for less than $300. Of course, I don't have the balcony railings in the correct color (white, which is rare) but I don't really care for 100% accuracy at this point. 99.9% is fine for me, and may even be for you.

I have all of the parts, and I haven't even touched them since getting them 2 months ago! I have lots of projects that have been put on hold because of work, and parts just sit in bins.

I bought many copies of each of Green Grocer, Fire Brigade, and Grand Emporium. When GG was discontinued, I resold them for more than double what I paid for them, and I'm waiting for FB to discontinue so I can do the same. Whenever I'm building a MOC and I find I need a bunch of pieces, I look at the pieces included with some of the new sets I've "hoarded" and see if I can use a majority of them. So far I've "destroyed" some Winter Toy Shops, Winter Bakery, but most importantly (and relevant to this thread) some Grand Emporiums. I found Grand Emporium to be a good parts pack for building some MOC modulars (lots of windows, lots of useful tan, a tan baseplate, etc.

I know many people shop BrickLink for single pieces for their MOCs, but I prefer to buy brand new from Lego. I think the modulars are a good price/piece, and have good classic model designs (they don't "look" like Lego sets per se). As long as Lego keeps making them, I'll be forced to buy multiples of each set. Unfortunately, I started into this thing too late, and I only obtained one Cafe Corner, sans box. At first I absolutely loved Cafe Corner, and thought it was the best, but as I've built other subsequent modulars, I've found a new love in each new set, with their unique building techniques I never would have thought of (like the roofs in the Winter sets, for example, or the SNOT numbers on FB, etc.).

You almost can't go wrong owning a modular building, as long as you keep the box in good condition, and all of the pieces in good condition, because historically they have always sold for more than their introduction price even in used (but 100% complete) condition.

Thanks for this. This really helped me decide on what and where to start. I love MOC but could never justify buying the parts one by one - shipping to Singapore is very steep. I will take your advice and pursue the pieces sans the boxed sets.

If you consider that the Pet Shop is really 2 smaller building combined, you are getting 2 sets right from the start. So you don't have to think of it as just having one modular building.

Is anyone interested in a trade? Used cc with box for nib grand carousel? Used in this case meaning adult built and displayed only.

Worth a try, but I'd be amazed if you can pull that off. You can get a mint Grand Carousel for between US$450 and 500 on BrickLink, and the cheapest complete Cafe Corner is almost US$800... and 10196 will never be as much of a collector's item as 10182.

But by all means, good luck :)

No, no, no. I have four cc's. Two complete, two misb. Who wanna trade me?

Oh! My mistake. That's a totally different kind of proposition. I've got one already and don't really need more, but I wouldn't be too surprised if somebody else will take you up on that offer! :)

This is true...so why not selling the cc and use the money to buy the 10196? You can make a profit...plus it's much safer than trading...

I'd trade with you if I did have an extra Grand Carousel  ....only thing I have available for trade is an extra Fire Brigade (which I know isn't a fair trade).
