Hmm... strange how your set came with the classic old coins. I've seen plenty of reviews of this set, and they all come with new pearl-gold coins, and all of them have "10" on them. I guess those coins are only in the US-versions? Does anyone know?

I bought Whitecap Bay in the UK and it has the new pearl gold coins. Shame really because the old chrome coins were so much prettier.

Indeed they are in every set in every country. The orginal plan was to make the Gold bars and the cins in a chromed ones, what a shame at LEGO choosed to change their mind.

I think it may have had to do with the fact that now all the gold matches, like on the gold cap pieces laying all around, the gold bars with the 1 center piece for the diamond or Jack to stand on. But then that little kryptonite looking thing is chromed gold so maybe I'm wrong.

Got this today, maybe my favorite lego set, its so cool for how small and compact it is, great figures, great play features, all around a terrific set and value and it sits well on my desk.

Just a few more pics, I hope its ok to post them in here rather then start my own review thread.

I think it should include atleast one Flintlock Pistol, Because in the film they both use them in the duel. And Jack kills Barbossa with his. Still, I think I'm getting it for my birthday (Tomorrow...GACK!)

Good review with nice quality pics

In the Uk are people having problems with the coins, because im from essex and when i brought isle de muerta from play.com i got the new coins, so if anyone has got the classic coins :{>

If you want the new coins buy online i guess

Great review 'WFang'. It is rather disappointing that TLG is making our gold pearl instead of chromed. That IS very lame. I would have bought this set alone had they been chromed. Too bad :pir-sceptic:

I got my copy of this set last wednesday. I absolutely love it! The figs, by far, are the reason that I got this set. I am just amazed every time I look at Jack! Magnificent fig (and my favourite fig ever, along with new Boba Fett). Barbossa is also just top notch. The skellie Barbossa is a bit dissapointing because A) the baldric is loose on him and B) his arms aren't very posable. He can just chop up a down. :pir-laugh:

Elizabeth is great. The hairpiece they gave her is my favourite female hairpiece yet! I have already made a moc based on the scene, and am working on posting it up on here soon, possibly today!

Also, I got the new pearl coins. Kinda glad about it. They look cool.

I bought this today, and I have to say it's better in person than it looks in all the pictures I've seen. No, it's not anywhere near a complete Isla de Muerta scene - it doesn't even have Will in it, and he's in the frakking poster that's included with this set! But it is a nice little vignette, conveying the feeling of the scene rather nicely, and it doesn't feel like a cheat. I definitely feel like I got my money's worth here. It's a great starter set for this theme.

The minifigs are beautiful, and now I have a rowboat! And coins! And did I mention the minifigs are beautiful?

As a newcomer, my opinion on the chrome vs. pearl gold money is this: now all the pearl gold things that are supposed to be gold in every other set - goblets, plates, 1x1 round pieces and whatever else you've got - actually look like gold. The contrast between them and the occasional chrome gold piece was rather jarring. Overall, the chrome gold does look shinier, but I'd rather have the uniformity.

Great reviews. I feel for the $ it should of came with a bit more. Maybe another mini!

Finally after a long wait my PotC sets arrived and although I had little time (because the QAR took me longer than anticipated). I also build the Isla De Muerta.

The figs are the reason to buy this set, Elisabeth is my favorite female fig ever (together with Ginny Weasel). The skeleton Barbossa is superb.

The set is of a reasonable size and the build is a done deal, not shorter or longer than you can planned. The only real disappointment are the "golden parts" like the gold brick and the coins...

Overall a great addition.

Very nice review. I like this set very much. Elizabeth is just :pir-wub: and I must say that Barbossa is my favorite Minifig at the moment. The printing, his face, everything is just perfect. A wonderful minifig.

As for the coins, I bought this set in germany and they were all perl gold as are the bars. The price is a bit high but I think the fountain set is a lot more overpriced.

I built this yesterday, and I am not that thrilled.

Pros:

Minifigs - of course

New baldrick - sword hanging thingy

Rowboat

New Compass 1x1 tile

Cons:

Not chromed gold as pictued on box

Dress printing does not line up

Price - This costs twice the amount of a SW Battlepack. It has the same number of figs (sure, great new molds and prints, but one is a skeleton) and about double the amount of pieces (again, a rowboat and some new stuff, but still). One of my main reasons for paying for this was the new, chromed gold bars... Let's see what S@H replacement service says about my complaint!

Well after building this yesterday, I agree with 'Skafte'.....minifigs are the best part of this set. But yes, I'm a little p.o.'ed with Lego over the gold bars and coins....images on the box might be a legal downfall of some sort if it doesn't say on the box about errors or allowances for design changes. It could be considered false advertising, but aw well who cares it's a great set of minifigs ! :pir_laugh2:

Keep on sailing the high seas drinking rum ! :pir_laugh2:

thanks for another great review.

i like the minifigs on this set, both jack and the female minifig.

the 2 other wearing the series 4 musketeer hat not so much, though i like the blue hat feather.

i like the boat. i prefer the treasure chest like the one piece type with hinged cover.

the revolving part or mechanism i find cool. and the apples.

as a suggestion to whitefang, try google picasa's auto contrast feature. it will certainly bring out the colors on your photos. i hope you don't mind me suggesting. i'm really a fan of your great and comprehensive reviews.

Thank you everyone for all of your kind comments and thoughts with regards to this set review. I supposed mine wasn't that fortunate to get the pearl gold coins, but the thought of not getting the chrome gold bars irk me. I hope this will resolve soon. I will prefer all mine gold and treasure to be shiny gold.

Thank you for your suggestion. I am not aware of picasa's capabilities and not sure about the auto contrast. I will check it out to see if it will meets to my requirements.

Here's my review that I did for a different site:

Pros:

Johnny Depp Minifigure.

Cons:

Everything! Note the fact the chrome gold pieces as shown on the box ARE NOT CHROME! Lego is getting some hate mail today! :x

Summary:

Don't buy it. It's crap.

Letter sent by Rook to Lego.com/customer service:

Set: #4181 Isla de la Muerta

The fact that the chrome gold pieces, as shown on the box, ARE NOT CHROME! Lego has scammed me! This is FALSE ADVERTISING and must be rectified! Your product DOES NOT match what was shown and therefore why I decided to purchase this product! I bought it solely for the new chrome gold bars pieces and when I opened my box what did I find. Non-Chrome pieces! And the gold chrome coins were of course also not chrome.

This product is a hoax! A lie! A falsehood! Lego must recall, replacement, or other wise notify and rectify this to all customers. Lego should be willing to fix this by: customers may get their money back at store purchased with receipt (if not Lego Store or S@H) even if box is open and half the pieces are missing, a credit to their VIP account for the full value of the set if purchased at Lego Store or S@H, or if customer emails Lego's customer service /complaints or missing pieces and asks for the proper parts that are shown to be chrome on the box, to be shipped to them free of cost.

I’ve seen slight box errors like this in the past. I understand products and factory procedures change, but to introduce a new piece (the gold bar brick) and then to have it not be what it appears to be is simply robbery to the fan community. You literally suckered me into buying this based solely on a single new type and color of piece that is NOT in this product.

Alright. Today was an interesting day. First, POTC: On Stranger Tides, debuted today, and I saw it at the IMAX. Everything is over priced there, but thats a different story. Seeing the movie finally motivated me to head on over to Toys-R-Us today, to pick up some of the POTC sets. I only bought two, as I didn't expect them to be so expensive. I havent bought a new LEGO set since the 90's however. Anyway I picked up Isla De Muerta, and London Escape. The reason I am mentioning this is because my set of Isla De Muerta DID come with chrome gold bars and coins. The coins were the new type, not the classic pirate coins on a sprue. However, The London Escape came with the Pearl gold coins and a bar that everyone has been complaining about. Now, I don't know if the Isla De Muerta is a prototype, and I got very lucky, or if the sets containing pearl gold coins and bars were just a first batch, and I got a very new Isla De Muerta containing what is supposed to be the standard. If more Chrome bars and coins start popping up, I think we would all like to hear about it, and see what the trend is, as this is obviously something that a lot of people find important. On a side note, I did only get 2 of the chrome gold bars, rather than 3 of the pearl ones as shown in the review pictures. As for a quick review, It's not a bad set, and it did take a little longer to build than expected. There is a little, not much, but a little more to it than what it first looks like, glancing at pictures. The figures are nice, though I really could care less for the skeleton. I might put the Skeleton Barbossa head onto one of my old classic pirate/castle skeletons. Definately worth it if you get the chrome treasure, but I picked it up after reading reviews here, expecting pearl treasure, so I'd say its worth it either way.

  • 1 year later...

Wow, glad that I could read both reviews about this set. I thought of buying this set only for the (chrome) gold bars. Now I am glad that I've been warned.

Nevertheless, it seems that some people received those chrome gold bars (like the poster before me). I've seen them in a RPG/Mafia as well (can't remember which one). That annoys me even more. Why do some people have the luck to receive those and some not?
