Tomcat RIO Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 (edited) Recently picked up a loose and incomplete imperial trading post parts from ebay. Gave me the baseplate ramp to build El Dorado fortress, one of my childhood dream sets. But, lacking alot of the yellow panel parts, i decided to improve upon El Dorado, by expanding it to house a full scale harbour and docking facilities for my 4 bluecoat ships. The fortress would also be the key element for an expansion process of an entire Bluecoat barracks compound + a small shipping and fishing port town. The total estimated size should vary from 6 pieces of grey 48x48 baseplates to maybe 10 or more blue 32x32 baseplates for the harbour.. Wish me luck, bricks and money. Having been sailing around the seas for several months, Admiral Broadside realised that he needed to find a good homebase with a large harbour to house his fleet. Therefore, he gave command of the Sea Dragon to the officers, and set off on a fast clipper to scout the Caribbean for a suitable port or harbour from which to set up his headquarters. And he would take it by cannon and gun power if need be And indeed, he sailed and come across a humble little abandoned fort, with a good natural ramp and a repairable walls. This looks like a fine one, doesnt it? without further ado, he set his men ashore to dismantle and clean up the derelict, and begin rebuilding the fortress to call the Bluecoat's own. And we claim this spot, for the Bluecoat empire! Progress was too slow. Broadside decided to use his cannons to speed up the process. And this new fortress and harbour, shall be known as Fort Marlin. And my prized trophy marlin that Mr Skiving Sailor taught me how to catch, shall be placed as mantlepiece above the gates. more details of how i built the marlin.. comparing it to 2 minifigs, makes it rather to scale, as marlin in real life grow to about 5m long, about 2.5 human height. That's all for this first update. Lots of bricks and parts from my Caribbean Capital's spares and Bricklink/ebay orders are streaming in over the weekend and next week, so I will update then. As for the overall scheme of the port, I should be building a sort of hybrid cross between Zceberus's Fort Brighton's white-yellow-red themed soldiers fort and barracks, wall structures, martinsuper's Port Defiance great docking harbour, and Dandrew's Jeff Elliot beach buildings. I am still looking through the vast number of great mocs on the pinned archive thread for inspiration on the town-port buildings. Keep on brickin'! Edited April 21, 2011 by Tomcat RIO Quote
Tomcat RIO Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 (edited) more progress. Finished up the center entrance-main gate, the resupply crane, and a basic port walkway. the resupply warehouse pit crane is mounted on a turntable a guard post and harbor master registrar to bookin all military and visitors to the eastern side of the port, which will be a military compound the main gate interior featues a 1 stud wide slit, which will allow a grilled gate to fall through in case of attack. this is similar to the castle contraptions from black knights of the classic castle era. more baseplates and bricks are being used to build the western extension, which is the town-civilian area with its own port facitlites, and the eastern end will blend into more military buildings. Bjornu Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Great story ! is there going to be something behind those walls? or are you going to keep it this way, just as a diorama? (nothing behind) Quote
The Crazy Corsair Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Really impressive, i like the creative approach and how clean this looks! Well done! Cant wait to see this grow! Quote

Bjornu Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Have you made any progress yet ? Well i was waiting for you, so i decided to ask you for now Quote
Tomcat RIO Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 Thanks guys for warm reception and encouragement. -Bjornu, yes I have made minor adjustments to the baseplate, using a 16x32 for the side rather than a 32x32. Also at the moment I am thinking of rebuilding the gate structure to better fit a portcullis. So yes there will be a major refit. In addition I have been obtaining more bricks for the town and the military depot, testing out the most efficient way of building with less bricks for the walls. I will in a month's time! Quote
Dockmaster Brickington Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 The only way you could possibly make this better if it was a redcoat fortress! Quote
Bjornu Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 The only way you could possibly make this better if it was a redcoat fortress! Nay Delay that ! I think he does a good job on a Bluecoat Fort this time. Quote
Tomcat RIO Posted August 3, 2011 Author Posted August 3, 2011 some very small updates - I decided to go huge on this MOC. baseplates size is 128 by 128, each plate will be seperable from each other via technic pins and bricks, or similar.. And all the grey and green plates will be raised by the height of 1 BURP/LURP rock panel relative to the blue baseplates - stairs and wharves will make up the height difference. I have taken down the main gate for the major refit and rebuild. For the town, my idea is to have 3 different segments. In the upper left near the green plates will be the upmarket villas and Victorian style houses for the rich folk - Using creator and MOC modular sets. The middle section will have a 19th century middleclass, functional square-ish buildings looking like old London or the nice Nyhavn harbour in Copenhagen. For the plate nearer the sea, It will be "a wretched hide of scum and villainy".. I have 2 sets of 10193 incoming, to make taverns, bazaars and a fish/meat market. I'd appreciate help in this aspect as there are many MOCs out there I've trawled through, all with good ideas and techniques. "Sir, under your orders we have decided to incorporate more baseplates into our MOC, in fact, almost all of our free baseplates have been commited. The town and the fortress will begin shortly. As you can see, its gonna be quite huge-ish.." Good golly scallywags!! Anybody thinks it is a good idea to use square 1x1 plates for the cobblestone roads? Or round plates are better? Quote
Captain Becker Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Now im only wondering how long it takes you to complete this whole MOC. This is just crazy stuff, but im wondering if its going to be as nearly impressive as Our WIP town Port of Brick Royal. But i belive it may be. As for the roads, i would use 1x1 tiles or 1x2 tiles, but if you dont want to use those, then 1x1 round studs are the best IMO. I wish you good luck whit this project and surely aiting for updates for this megaproject. Captain Becker Quote

Captain Becker wow that is sure one big project, I am humbled to even be able to build a section of that - I probably don't have enough of the bricks, and minifigures, to equip my fort and town. Yea but some common elements of large pirate towns will be included exactly like Commodore Hornbricker ( any real name I may address him by?) - church, forge, uptown villas.. etc.. it might just take me more than a year to accumalate the bricks and sections. My Caribbean Sea Dragon moc took me about 5 months for the approx 2000 pieces to fall into place. This fort would probably be in the region of 15k minimum. I will take note of the studs vs tiles advice. It will depend on BL's price and quantity available when I get around to paving the street. Quote
Commodore Hornbricker Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Nice looking port and fortress. As you might imagine I LOVE the scale and ambition of your design. The bigger the better! Keep it up. One day many years from now we can have an epic battle (which you and the rest of the Bluecoats will be defeated - as was fortold many years ago by a scorcerer from the early castle theme era). Quote

Your crazy! I will lead the Bluecoats to supreme victory once and for all! You will be crushed like a rotted grape! Glad to see you back Quote

Glad to see you back Thanks. Glad to be able to stop in. With this new job things get so busy that weeks go by so fast. Unfortunaltly the free time just isn't there anymore and I miss out on all these teriffic MOC's...such as Fort Marlin here. I have to make more of an effort to swing by! Quote
martinsuper Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 An honor to follow Hornbicker of course... I thought it said "Fort Martin" so I got excited. Now I see its a fish! Cool fort! I am always a big fan of MOCs that follow the original feel of the old sets. Good Luck! Keep brickin'! Quote
Bjornu Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 ! Cool fort! I am always a big fan of MOCs that follow the original feel of the old sets. ! Then it's good I'm working on a Moc with the classic Feel !! I'm also in love with the classic pirates, so Fort Marlin is going to be a fort I have to see ! Greetz Bjornu Quote
Tomcat RIO Posted August 20, 2011 Author Posted August 20, 2011 While the 15,000 bricks are being amassed slowly for the town. Why don't I entertain you guys with my combined bluecoat fleet? hehehe. They will be homeported in Fort Marlin's bustling harbours once done :) The left most ship is the Sea Dragon, aka Caribbean Capital - wip and completed pics may be found here: Classic Pirates forum piratemoc 'Sea Dragon' Another MOC to introduce is the "sea-wolf", an upgunned and lenghtened clipper, crewed by veteran bluecoat sailors.. poor pirates head from ships that blasted apart by the wolf. additions include an extra 1 pc of hull, 1 more cannon port, a simple cabin, as well as a 2nd mast and 2 more sails, making this ship the same size as Brickbeard Bounty and the BSBaraccuda another moc is the triple plow cannon ship destroyer, mounted on a turntable near the bow. made from some clips and rods, round bricks, on a standard cannon mount Trigger Happy time! Quote
Tomcat RIO Posted August 20, 2011 Author Posted August 20, 2011 (edited) And to add lastly for today, the Governor's daughter's personal ship, the Sea Rose, crewed by an all female crew. They will be getting their own female barracks in the town, already have some brickplans and I dub it, Amazonia.. a posh cabin, though open air. I am being inspired and investing in Paradisa! sets for Amazonia :) Edited August 20, 2011 by Tomcat RIO Quote
