Why not? Mario has not gotten any Minifig sets yet, and Animal Crossing needs new head moulds that can be made with a CMF budget. That said, I do think that Fortnite is the more likely of the two options (and what I would personally like to see!).

The theme just popped up and is not an established IP like HP, STar wars, and Marvel/DC.  We don't even know how long Animal Crossing will last.

That is exactly why I think that LEGO would do it - They can use the CMF budget to make a bunch of new head pieces that they will need for the theme, then keep reusing them in the regular sets. Also, the concept of adding characters to your customised world fits a CMF line well!

I would love to see more non-licensed series but we have two non-licensed seires (Seires 25 and Space).

So I will guess it’s either Fornite or Mario.

It’s worth remembering that the first Harry Potter series came alongside the revival of the theme, and was certainly used by the designers to get a lot of new molds for the rebooted theme. Theoretically, a new theme could also see that treatment of Lego had enough faith in it. That said, I’d expect to see a cmf like that released more closely to the first wave of sets in that case. The May cmf is the unlicensed space one so there’s nothing really stopping a theoretical Animal Crossing series from being switched with that and being released close to the theme’s first wave. To me that’s a much stronger argument against it being an Animal Crossing series as opposed to just ‘new theme’.

They don't even know if this theme will sell well.

The theme came out over a decade before so Lego knew it was an established well selling theme.  We have no idea how well this will do and Lego has never introduced a new theme and made a CMF based off it immediately without any sales data.  It just doesn't make any sense to do that theme without and data on sales or popularity.

Lego of your doubts.

The first Simpsons minifig series released in May 2014 - the only other Simpsons stuff to release before it was the Simpsons house, which released February 2014. So, it has happened before. Heck, the two Marvel series have had figures in them that didn't even have their connecting shows released before their minifig series released.

Let’s not forget the Loony Toons and Muppets series which have only had brickheadz of some of the characters released after the fact and lego essentially released bind not really knowing how they’d be received. And both of those were super heavy on unique new molds that can’t be used anywhere else.

I was really hoping both those themes would get follow ups with more CMFs or actual sets.

Once again The Simpsons is a huge property with a big fan base and a large number of collectibles sold already.

Are you trying to say that Animal Crossing (the second highest selling game on the Switch, at over 43 million copies) and Fortnite (one of the most popular free-to-play games on any platform) aren't "huge properties with a big fan base and a large number of collectables sold already"? I think your last point is moot anyways. Aside from the fact that Animal Crossing and Fortnite have both had figurines sold in the form of Amiibo, Funko Pops, Shokugan, Hasbro, etc... How many "collectables" of Simpsons, Muppets, or Looney Toons were sold, let alone sales numbers Lego would have had access to, in order to greenlight any of those series?

@JohnTPT17 "The Simpsons" is the longest running comedy show of all time and a cultural phenomenon you can´t compare many things to. The simple fact it still is not canceled after all those disgustingly bad new seasons is proof of the insane relevance it once had, when Lego made sets for them.

Besides that, yes, I also think those IPs are in fact large enough to squeeze a dime out of them with a cmf as long as the hype is still there. I hope we will get this cool viking from Fortnite.

Considering looney tunes has been around since 1930, the Muppets in 1955, and the Simpsons 1989.  Yes they have been around a long time and have had a long shelf life with a lot of products sold.  Personally never heard of Animal Crossing till recently, I didn't know it was that big.  I just think Mario or other Nintendo properties like Zelda would be a better choice.  But I could see Animal crossing essentially be the second coming of Fabuland for lego.  I just didn't reallize Animal crossing was that big.  Then again it's not really in my wheel house as far as games go.

Zoth33, you can be on Fornite but not on Animal Crossing. It’s just silly to argue over a mini guessing game…

What does that first part mean?  All I'm saying is there that I thought lego would do other things first.  I even admitted I didn't know how big Animal crossing is.

Now with the Space Series (almost) confirmed to be Series 26, I'd think getting Series 27 in the fall is next to impossible. So it's gotta be licensed for sure

But I can't help but notice we're getting two regular series back to back again, just like S23 and S24. The last time before that was Series 14 and 15 like 8 years ago

I do wonder if licensed series are losing their charm? Or maybe there are other circumstances like them being more expensive to produce because of the specific moulds that cant be reused anywhere else (Muppets, Looney Tunes).

Or potential licensing partners a warily eying all those torn open boxes from Marvel series 2 and are waiting to see if Lego’s current steps (adding the data matrix codes, and I’m sure the themed unlicensed series is part of it too) to see if they do enough to combat stock loss. The Marvel/Disney behemoth can afford to absorb that, but anyone else…

@Black Falcon, i am pretty sure we talked about this but it turns out that Spae is Seires 26, just like with Series 14 aka The Monsters…

@Robert8, back to back stuff doesn’t bother me, I’m just glad to have more non-licensed series! We haven’ seen follow-ups for Looney Tunes or Muppet series, which I’m surprised. I understand that there are so many minifigures in Harry Poter theme that there are not any left for its Series 3. DC Comic Sereis ws not sold well in my view but I’m sure Marvel and Disney will have follow-ups.

Bet* is what I meant to say.

I love Animal Crossing, but you can't compare that as a CMF to say Looney Tunes, Simpsons or Muppets which will have a wider appeal.

That said, AC would be better as polybags. Small build, character.

I really hope they don't do Animal Crossing as a CMF series. I prefer they'd follow the Mario model, and do it outside of the CMF. It would work for both CMF collectors and Animal Crossing fans.

They could pump out endless numbers of series of 8 characters or whatever, and keep going if it works and stop if it doesn't. If it takes a CMF slot, it gets boring for those that like different CMFs, and for Animal Crossing fans, it would give more characters overall.

I also hope they do something other than AC right now.  If they do do fortnite it would probably have some nice variety of fig parts.

Not at all a fan of Fortnite but I have to agree with you on that, given the variety of possible characters.

Well, Lego is unpredictable, I’m just saying…  I don’t need to debate over Animal Crossing vs Fornite.

in terms of $,  Looking at the LEGO Fortnite characters I can think of very few items that LEGO would need new molds for that they couldn't then incorporate into their own themes further down the line.  That wouldn't necessarily be the case with Animal Crossing or Mario characters requiring new heads.
