How do you precieve contemporary chivlary?

To clarify, I realise chivalry has everything to do with knights but I'm not interested in its history or how/where it originated, the information I'm looking for is focused more towards how modern people act chivalrous in the 21st century.

So what does it mean to you? How does one be chivalrous? What actions and traits does one need to exhibit?

Chivalry has everything to do with knights though.

Romaticized chivalry (King Arthur stuff) is somewhat taken into todays culture though. Opening doors, walking on a certain side of the street, loyalty and virtue and much more could be applied to the modern use.

Without going to deep into any of it I suppose it has its place. It is a made up concept great for stories and a worthy goal to be sure but it is usually never achieved. The proper way of treating woman and other people in general is and always will be important. I think things like uprightness, virtue, selflessness, courtesy, and respect are all things everyone should be concerned with. Lofty goals that we set and work to achieve.

As far as women are concerned I am not sure. Some women are better than others I suppose. For superficial or meaningful reasons both. A woman who demands to be put on a pedastool will never be happy and one who doesn't even want to be noticed may deserve it.

I would say to be a man of chivalry you must put something first and yourself second. Arthur and his knights swore oaths in the stories like "For the Christ, and for the king" and often did great feats for thier lady. Contemporary chivalry is based on christian ideals told in fantasy stories that were rewritten numerous times. Many people say chivalry is dead and for the part I agree.

Bottom line treat others as you want to be treated; respectfully, honestly, and as a person having value. Take chivalry to what extremes if you want, I have found that it is best to travel in the road instead of the ditch on either side.

I mostly agree with Suvie.

As a Martial Artist (and Nurse), I uphold certain values such as courtesy, politenesss, respect, humility, honesty. I think much if this is sadly lacking in today's society.

What I disagree with generally is special gender acknowledgement, like opening doors for ladies. Please understand, I'm not at all opening doors for others, just that I'll open door for men as well as ladies. I'd gladly give up my bus seat for a pregnant lady, but then I'd also give it up for an old chap that was stuggling to walk up the bus on his sticks. Or a younger, disabled person. I'm not against courtesy, just against courtesy to groups where there's no basis. We live in a sexually equal society.

Controversial to some. But honest.

SuvieD and Captainau have provided me with the information I was looking for, but for anyone else intending to answer don't delve too deeply in the medieval aspects of chivalry.

In my country it is sad to say that chivalry (chevalerie to be correct) doesn't exist anymore in it's orginal form.

France still has a chivalry cast, known as the "Chevaliers de la l
