dyip_90 Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 You guys do know if you check http://www.fbtbforums.net you will see that there are no contents there. Possibly an upgrade mistake that resulted in deletion of all the phpBB files
iangreig Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 You do know the forums were "hacked", don't you ? I caught if briefly with all the "should have used a Mac" graffiti - most of the individual fora had been deleted by this *******. I'm guessing that they are trying to restore it from a backup or, worst case, create it again from scratch. It would be nice to get some official statement on www.fbtb.net though ... Ian.
dyip_90 Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 ooo...i wasn't on the comp at 20-Dec-2004 12:18 to know that..i see..
iangreig Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 The arguement mentioned above happened after the forum has hacked. Tempers were a little on edge, as the "hacker" still seemed to be active - posts were getting edited, avatars were being changed, accounts deleted, spurious posts made ... it was all pretty nasty. There remains a big question over what exactly the hacker managed to grab, which is why it would be nice to get some official statement. Ian.
dyip_90 Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 would you say this is a good reason to upgrade?
jonfett Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Tempers were a little on edge, as the "hacker" still seemed to be active - posts were getting edited, avatars were being changed, accounts deleted, spurious posts made ... it was all pretty nasty. I was online whilst it happened, I know that Sam got hacked and so did a few others. Basically, for those who weren't there, someone deleted all the forums except the BST. There were a couple of threads which people used to "express their views" of the hackers. The forum directory is now empty so it doesn't look good, I wonder what they will do now. Jon.
Vader Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Unfortunatly the hacker got them good >:( why people do this is beyond me, people wont go out and by a mac because of this it will just make them hate macs more.
jonfett Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 why people do this is beyond me Maybe the hacker has had bad experiences at FBTB in the past?? I am sure that there are plenty of people who have been banned there. Jon.
iangreig Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 If that was their justification (and, to be honest, I saw no indication that it was) then it's hardly a good excuse for such apalling, and frankly illegal, behaviour ! You're right that a fair few folk have had bad experiences on fbtb (I did in my early days there) - it does tend to be rather 'clique'-y, and there is often a "one rule for us, another rule for the rest of you" mentality, but many of the folk over there have got to know each other over many years - some noob coming in and rocking the boat is never going to be welcome. And lets be honest, I've seen the same happen here in the last little while ... in fbtb's defence, things have been a bit more relaxed recently, although the whole "leaks"/"respect the brick"-thing (which I agree with, for fbtb) still causes the most on-going problems. I think there's room enough for multiple brick fora, each with its own style & "feel"; people just need to find the one that suites them the best & respect others preferences. Ian
Orlego Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Ok, time to send jipay to FBTB for a day to fix everything. ;)
jonfett Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Well said Ian, you really hit the nail on the head with that! :) I agree that it is not easy when someone new comes and acts differently than people would expect. But to me FBTB seems a little less welcoming than other sites. Sometimes you get a new member showing a MOC or something and it only gets 1 reply, then you get a well known member getting 10-20 replies in their thread. I know that the people at FBTB don't pick on, or exclude, others.. but it sure feels bad if you seem to be being ignored. Just my opinion. Jon.
iangreig Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Hey, I'm one of the biggest thread killers over there ! How do you think that makes me feel ? *satis* Just 'cause my middle name is "ThreadKissOfDeath" doesn't mean people should take it literally ! :$ One of the things that really winds me up, big time, are all the "me too" posts; it's not exclusive to fbtb, but it was a real problem for a while - less so now, thank goodness. Ian.
Cello Collin Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Well said, Ian. The internet's one bigass place. If you don't like our policy at FBTB, that's perfectly okay. You're still welcome over there, just try your best to respect our rules. There are plenty of other places to post the "bad leaks." Jon, regarding what you said: Keep in mind that not everyone can get to every thread. It doesn't matter how long you've been there, how good your custom is, etc. Heck, I've had my share of threads ignored, save for a couple of folks. :) No one's perfect, bro. We can't reply and/or follow every single thread. Look at Fez's Better ten yuo thread, for example. I completely missed out one what happened there, and someone else had to lock it. And Fez is a member I like! :P
Vader Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Has anyone heard from ace about what the state of play over there is??
Cello Collin Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Not yet. If I hear anything before everyone else does, I'll let y'all know.
iangreig Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Thanks Collin - any news is appreciated ... Ian.
Cello Collin Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Y'all also may wanna keep in mind that this jerk hacker hit us at a really bad time. It's nearly Christmas time, which means there's a LOT going on. Especially in Ace's life. If he spends any time online right now, it's only to work on the forums. So if y'all don't see any news on the main page right away, that's more than likely why.
Jipay Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Let us know if we can help in any way :) You should try to do back up quite frequently as we do here. It helps a lot in this kind of situation ! I hope everything will be fixed soon. It's hard to think about all the fbtbers without any forum ! especially for Xmas as you said, it is a key period for the toys websites. Hope you will find out who did this ! Considering the threads, I must disagree. here everybody get replys. First of all it's part of our job to watch every single thread and secondly nobody here (including our members so far) would let a thread without a reply. It's all about respecting others before respecting the brick. It worked well so far *satis*
Cello Collin Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 I'm sure things are going well here. You guys have a great place starting up here, and y'all are doing a great job keeping up with things. :) Just remember that nobody's perfect. It doesn't happen often, but we will miss things every once in a while. I don't think it's as harmful as some people think it is. Like I said, I've had more than my share of threads ignored. Doesn't really bug me much at all. It never has, as long as I've been there. We're kinda going in circles here. Each of our communities has its strengths and its weaknesses, and there's not much of a point in us arguing over who's better. I've been banned twice from FBTB, and both times I was let back in after recognizing the error of my ways (and boy was I a screwup). Now that I am where I am, my opinion is always gonna be that FBTB is better than everyone short of the Pope, so... uhh... nyah nyah!!!!!!!! Ahh, I love the holidays. ;)
Jipay Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Hey have you noticed that you got twice the same news on the frontpage ? Once posted by Denise and once by Josh (the new tie fighter on lego.com) :P j/k
Cello Collin Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Hehe. Yeah, I love it when they do that. No, we're not a scatterbrained bunch! Not at all! ;) EDIT: Couple of updates. Jon Palmer posted the message from the hacker on his website. Clicky the linky below to read it: http://www.zemi.net/index.php?blog=on&p=74 And Ace posted a message on the main page. It's not much, but it'll have to do for now: Forums down for the count12.21.04 Ace Some wiseguy decided yesterday to hack into our forum. Fun. So they have been taken offline. While I work toward getting it restored, please bear in mind that since the holidays are upon us, it might take me some time to get something back up. Watch this page for updates.
Sarg_Kulo Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 I hope this means he can fix it. Don't get me wrong, I like it here, but sometimes it can be so quiet. :/
ApophisV Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Lol, always remember: This is still a very young community.... And the statistics proof that the traffic increases from week to week.... :)
