Dazmundo Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I managed to get quite a few of today's set Maybe that's why there wasn't one left for me D
SilentMode Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Maybe that's why there wasn't one left for me Not enough to clear a store; they were spread across three places.
fred67 Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Do you guys know if you'll be getting 30110 and 30111 (Harry Potter) with the paper deal?

SilentMode Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Do you guys know if you'll be getting 30110 and 30111 (Harry Potter) with the paper deal? There won't be any Harry Potter sets.
Dunjohn Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I managed to get quite a few of today's set, but I'll be selling/trading some of them (to FOLs). Today's Dragon Fight set is the one I'm least interested, so I just got three. I had been getting 4-5 of them. Previously I'd get a lot more than that but a combination of my current Dark Age and the switch to the Sun (there's a poem in there somewhere) has kept the numbers low. For the record, even when I has getting loads of each the shop would still never go through its whole batch so I'm not depriving anyone ;) Anybody know what they do with spares?

Peppermint_M Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Anybody know what they do with spares? Yes, they turn up in supermarkets later. I have seen plenty on hang tags on aisles, in baskets (like the kind footballs are often sold in) and sometimes just stacked in a box on the shelves. Both ASDA and TESCO have had some of the previous promo sets in stock. TIE Fighters, the Atlantis Mini Sub and some other Star Wars ones. The retail at about £1.99
RejectedShrimp Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Yesterdays Watchdog Featured this promotion stating that their was a shortage on the LEGO. I think we can all agree that its because we have all been getting as many as we possibly can
Dazmundo Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Got to WHSmiths at 11am today (I'm a teacher so can't go at opening time, but I had a free period as Yr11 are on study leave so I nipped out) They had signs everywhere saying that they had already run out. I got talking to a member of staff and appartently they have been having to open early with 4 tills going to cope with the queue of people outside waiting for the Lego, some buying 10 sets!! I decided to buy my paper anyway and when I got to the till I was very suprised when the assistant said they had run out of todays but the had some extra of SUNDAY's and I could have one of those instead. So I have now missed Wed, Thur & Fri. Not impressed I got the mirror sets with no problem at all but everyone is running out of these sets very early on in the day! D
Mr Benn Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 In WH Smith in Camberley (where I work) they've always had loads of the sets, late into the afternoon - I talked to one of the cashiers and she said they had a huge run on them every day early in the morning but there were still plenty left at 5pm - I have a sneaky suspicion that the staff have all gone home with plenty! Was at Toys R Us though in Watford later on today and she said they were sold out by lunchtime and it had just been crazy - am pleased to have least gotten a few of the sets I wanted though - would quite like the AT-ST tomorrow (given that it's a set that's been an official retail set, I already have two of those from ages ago!) but not sure I can be bothered to get up - tomorrow is my trip to the Lego store to buy the Pet Shop anyway so I'll get a good dose of Lego for the day! :) :)
Thego Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 So I have now missed Wed, Thur & Fri. Not impressed I got the mirror sets with no problem at all but everyone is running out of these sets very early on in the day!D I imagine that this has something to do with the wider circulation of The Sun (by a huge amount) and the fact that people who are just buying the paper as routine are getting the free Lego, even if they don't necessarily have the interest in it.
RubeusHagrid Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Unfortunately I didn't manage to get the X wing, but if anyone has one, I have a spare AT-ST for trade.
SilentMode Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Unfortunately I didn't manage to get the X wing, but if anyone has one, I have a spare AT-ST for trade. I have one.

No. What an amazingly ridiculous point of view- do you think any one believes you? Lame. It has more to do with a greedy newspaper(by the hugh amount of extra papers they sold) who supplied as little as possible to the distributing outlets- less than 500 per day for all of Northern Ireland -thats a population of 1,8 million.Maybe they thought no-one would turn up. The staff in these shops did a wonderful job handing it out with a smile,in less than 20 minutes most days, then took dog's abuse for running out.So the Sun ( and the news of the world) change their tune ,declare it a great success ,"surprise" everyone with two "extra days" and demanded any unclaimed lego is returned( but there is none in the majority of shops) . Why? -because they will have some of the 2.4 million customers who missed out writing to them after being shafted .They didn't care about their customers -they didn't care about about lego fans and they sure didn't care about Lego. To summarize and be clear- "It wuz the (news international)Sun who dunnit" Bad Dad
Catanas Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 No. What an amazingly ridiculous point of view- do you think any one believes you? Lame. Seriously, just because you're bitter about this whole thing, is there any need to lash out at other members and their views in this way? Its most likely a case of combined factors. Poor supply (Though my Smiths lasted well into the Afternoon most days, scalpers/hoarders with no regard for other people, to a small extent, his view and many, many others of minor significance.

To summarize and be clear- "It wuz the (news international)Sun who dunnit" Bad Dad Wow, cool it! You don't need to behave in such a reprehensible manner towards other members! I think it's a legitimate theory, just as much as your theory is! I can vouch for the fact that when the Mirror was running the promotion, there wasn't nearly as much mania over it as this time around. When the Mirror had it, Smith's wasn't over-run with manic paper grabbing fools, unlike this time. Plus there was no option to send off, so those who thought just to send a voucher needed instead to go to the shop. Also, I can bet that the only place it wasn't insane was Liverpool, and they don't like the paper. I have my own theories, but apparently they are snobbish and judgemental.
Praiter Yed Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Just looking on eBay and someone is selling the vouchers - they stated the following; "THE SUN HAS SAID THAT DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND THEY ARE EXTENDING THE TIME YOU HAVE LEFT TO REDEEM UNTIL THE END OF MAY IF THE STORE HAS NOT GOT THE TOY YOU WERE AFTER THEY WILL GIVE YOU A PHONE NUMBER THEN YOU RING THE NUMBER AND TELL THEM WHAT TOYS YOU WERE AFTER AND THEY WILL HAVE THEM SENT TO THE STORE OF YOUR CHOICE THEN YOU GIVE THEM YOUR VOUCHER AND GET AS MANY TOYS FOR THE VOUCHERS YOU HAVE IN OTHER WORDS JUST FOR INSTANCE YOU WANTED 5 OUT OF THE SEVEN THEN IF YOU HAVE THE VOUCHERS FOR THAT 5 THEN YOUR ENTITLED TO 5 TOYS" I don't know if this is true.
Thego Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) Well, I thought that the huge difference in circulation would certainly make a difference. The Mirror's cicrulation is 1m, whereas The Sun's is 3m per day. I thought it was a fair point, but apparently it was lame and ridiculous. My apologies. Also, I have another lame and ridiculous point: the allocation wouldn't have been entirely arbitrary. It would have been based on reported prior sales of The Sun within those outlets. It has more to do with a greedy newspaper Actually I think it has more to do with the greedy customers! I was speaking to WHSmiths staff who told me people were queueing up before the store opened in the morning and then buying up to 20 copies of the Sun to get the Lego, I would imagine alot of those sets will be heading to Ebay or Bricklink. Just greed!! D
Rumble Strike Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 If you search for Lego on eBay UK right now it's just ridiculous. Pages and pages of promos. Sad really. I bet 95% of them don't get bought.
Bad Dad Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) And please leave out the comments about liverpool- 96 people died. Edited May 24, 2011 by Bad Dad
WhiteFang Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 My dear UK Eurobricks friends, Without quoting and re-quoting anyone's comments, I will like to resolve and disarm this hostile issue at this very point in a friendly and objective manner without letting our personal feelings to be an obstruction to our views. Firstly, let's not be harsh and get personal with one another. We are a global AFOL community and for sure, we are here in Eurobricks is because we enjoy our LEGO hobby. I can understand the frustrations that are coming by some of you and as compared with previous successful attempts done by Daily Mirror. For sure, LEGO polybags giveaways work very well and it definitely works like a charm for the publisher who is marketing those exclusive polybags. We know this time, demand exceed supply and it has caused lots of resentment out there. I think this model will just work the same way and the same disappointment will be shown across the globe. The event is over and we can do nothing much about it and the Sun will likely not do anything much to resolve it, even though I felt the redeemption thing sounds fishy to me. As I don't resides in UK, I am speaking it from a passerby objective. Let's all not look back at this with bitter thoughts. WhiteFang
Spad Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 I was quite lucky, I work down the road from a WHSmith store, and they always had them in stock when I went in the morning (I wasn't so lucky with the AT-ST on Saturday though ). Next time it might be worth organising something to help out the folks who were not so lucky? I could have easily bought 10+ copies each day, and then offered them here for the price of the paper and postage. (I should have thought of this sooner... maybe something for next time?) or would this just be as bad as the scalpers? Just looking on eBay and someone is selling the vouchers - they stated the following; "THE SUN HAS SAID THAT DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND THEY ARE EXTENDING THE TIME YOU HAVE LEFT TO REDEEM UNTIL THE END OF MAY IF THE STORE HAS NOT GOT THE TOY YOU WERE AFTER THEY WILL GIVE YOU A PHONE NUMBER THEN YOU RING THE NUMBER AND TELL THEM WHAT TOYS YOU WERE AFTER AND THEY WILL HAVE THEM SENT TO THE STORE OF YOUR CHOICE THEN YOU GIVE THEM YOUR VOUCHER AND GET AS MANY TOYS FOR THE VOUCHERS YOU HAVE IN OTHER WORDS JUST FOR INSTANCE YOU WANTED 5 OUT OF THE SEVEN THEN IF YOU HAVE THE VOUCHERS FOR THAT 5 THEN YOUR ENTITLED TO 5 TOYS" I don't know if this is true. That doesn't sound right at all, and it looks like someone is just trying to offload their vouchers to some unsuspecting buyer. I would AVOID.
