Still Raindrop Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 (edited) Hi, everyone. I recently finished a building I'd been making for a long time, and wanted to post some pictures. I know the lighting isn't the best (it's been cloudy here lately), but I just wanted the photos out there--I'll take better pictures on a brighter day. Now, on to business. The ground floor of this building is the Rossville Vision Clinic, run by Dr. Isaac Lear. The top two floors are an apartment currently being rented by the artist Art M. Tate (his name is a pun--it's easier to get when you say the name of his hypothetical autobigraphy, "Art M. Tate's Life"). Here is the exterior of the building; on the back you can see the stairway that leads to Art M. Tate's apartment: Here are some views of the first floor, the Rossville Vision Clinic. The secretary, Iris Hazel, is typing diligently, booking appointments, and waiting for the phone to ring. The waiting area, complete with a magazine, glasses display, mirror, and couch. Inside the office you can see the letter chart on the wall and Dr. Lear on his computer. Is he looking at a patient's eye map, or playing a computer game? Note that this has the old version of the phoropter. Here is a patient looking through the phoropter. The second floor is Art M. Tate's main living area. Here is the kitchen: Living room: Entryway: Bathroom: And an overhead view of the second floor: The third floor loft is where Art sleeps; it also contains a balcony where he does much of his painting. Here is the artist himself, about to begin a figure painting. What concentration he has on his face as he prepares to make the first stroke! The artist's muse and assistant, Athena, posed in a flowery bathrobe for another masterful portrait. Hope you like the building! Please leave me comments with feedback--I'd like to know if there are ways for me to improve it. Edited June 10, 2011 by Mariko Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Great MOC 'Mariko' Love the detailed interior and I really like the entrance to the apartment. Great job Quote
greg3 Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 (edited) Nice building!! Love the giant eyeball sign and all the little details in the apartment are great. (I think the clinic looks a little bare though... not that I know what an eye clinic should have in it!!) Edited May 19, 2011 by greg3 Quote
Vindicare Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Apparently he's not too concentrated...he has green paint on his brush!? that's a very nice building. I see shades of the Pet Shop with some accessories, nice touch. I like the facade with the big eye staring back at you. Quote
Gregorovich Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Lovely MOC, Mariko! The facade is very nice, and I love the eye-sign. The interior details are very nice. I think that the surgery could use some more furniture (more machines perhaps? An area for the staff?), but the Artist's apartment is packed with excellent features. Well done, and thanks for sharing! Quote
Redcross Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Great work, did this project happen to start with the eye? I love how little ideas can bloom into a project. You could add a slit lamp, tonometer and and display of glasses. I love the shower curtain. Quote
lightningtiger Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Fantastic MOC 'Mariko', that red sofa is beautiful and great features designed into the eye specialist's rooms and the bathroom....gotta love that shower curtain ! Keep up the cool work and Brick On 'Mariko' ! Quote
Fuzzylegobricks Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Cool work! I like the use of the printed tiles for decorations around the whole stores. Maybe add some more to the eye docters room? If you don't have glasses I could fill you in on what is in there. Quote
Jargo Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 How fab! I was only talking about an eye clinic in the ideas for city sets thread yesterday. I like the eyeball sign. Actually I like the building front in general. Nice and clean and uncluttered. The lack of other signage makes it seem like a very private practice. I agree that the office could perhaps benefit from more stuff. maybe a bigger chair, bookcase, bigger desk with drawer full of lenses for the phoropter? the handheld examination tool they use could be made from a star wars clonetrooper helmet attachment. I like the apartment also. some lovely touches. the artists model is great and I love the plinth behind her. Quote
Still Raindrop Posted May 20, 2011 Author Posted May 20, 2011 Thanks, everyone! I'm glad you like it! I, too, felt like the office was a bit bare; I had made some other ophthalmology equipment, but I wasn't satisfied--it ended up making everything look too cramped, and nothing looked quite right (I had LASIK last year, but I've been to the ophthalmologist's plenty of times before that). I'll fiddle around with the interior on that one some more. I was also thinking of having a display with glasses, but I wasn't sure how to go about it--does anyone have any suggestions? It might look odd to have minifigure heads with glasses just sitting around, as they're a bit too lifelike for mannequins . . . perhaps I should use the aviator goggles? But I'm not sure how I would make that into a display without the helmets. Any suggestions would be most welcome Legocrazy81, I think he must be starting by painting the plants around her Redcross, the project almost started with the eye; I was making another building, but wasn't quite sure what to do with it, and wasn't getting great results; when the eye came along, the rest of the building kind of followed. I suppose you could say that making it an ophthalmologist's office gave the whole building a new focus By the way, in case anyone was wondering, I forgot to mention that the other minifigure names are based on wordplay, as well-- "Isaac Lear" sounds like "Eyes Are Clear," and Iris Hazed refers to an eye color and a part of the eye. Toadtorrent Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 ....gotta love that shower curtain ! Agreed...very clever idea...and I really like the phoropter as well. Great stuff. Quote
Still Raindrop Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I'm working on improving the interior of the ophthalmologist's office, and have already made a better chair and tweaked the phoropter to fit on the chair; I'll upload pictures of that soon. Slit lamp is up next. I'm still having trouble finding a way to do a display of different glasses frames--does anyone have any good ideas of how to do that, especially in a limited space (I'm thinking of putting those out in the waiting room)? SilentMode Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I've gotta say, I love the execution of this MOC. Some of the interior details remind me of my house MOC, and I particularly like the use of a short-haired female as the muse! Quote
mrblue Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 very good! especially the fact that you included even a bath in your moc! it's a little detail, but it makes the creation a step higher in realistic way, and you kept the feeling of lego! regarding the clinic, I don't think I'll ever go there... that big eye scares me!!! have a nice lego day mrBlue Quote
Still Raindrop Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 I updated some areas of the clinic; here are the new photos compared with some of the old ones (I updated the first post). Old: New: Old: New: Quote
Gregorovich Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 The changes you made definetely are an improvement on the old one. I love the glasses stand! Well done, again, and thanks for sharing. Quote
Still Raindrop Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 Thanks! I figured the only way to make a glasses display was to find something apart from helmets that those goggles attached to. The solution still leaves them a little loose (they're in place now, but a little jolt has them slipping downwards), but they stay attached nicely. The new phoropter was a complete accident (the chair was a deliberate change, but not the machine itself). I was looking through my printed tiles looking for a way to make a menu for my Mexican restaurant, when I noticed that the tape piece could serve nicely as a phoropter, too. It's a tough call, but I think I like my new design better; it looks more like the real thing to me. I'm pretty much finished with the artist's apartment (although seeing the John collection on flickr made me want to re-do some of my furniture), but the vision clinic interior is still a wip. Still, I like the changes I've made so far. Quote
22kane Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 You're on your way to have one hell of a city! These MOCs are just amazing. I really like the front architecture on this one as well as the detailed interior. This is my second favorite after your Mexican restaurant. A vision clinic? Who would have thought how cool it could be? Great work! Quote
