I'm stumped too. My creature building experience is completely not existent however I am curious how someone would go about making an "organic" Kraken. I.e. one that doesn't look too mechanical or robotic.

There are several different versions of this creature. Some are more octopus like, others are squid like while others are completely unique. The only thing in common with them all is tentacles

In the movie the only glimpse of the kraken is the tentacles and a mouth.

I like this one the best because it escapes the "robotic" look, but runner up would be just the tentacles...

OK, so, if you want to build, basically, a giant squid.... The one Phes put there is definetly the best.

If you want the Kraken from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest, You simply cant build the whole thing. Rather, each tentacle would have to be built up out of blocks with spinning thingys and connector joints for full articulation, and the head would be QUITE a trick, involving about 500 more connector joints for the full, giant, roundy-toothed mouth thing.

Hehe , I think a haven't got any pieces which are suited for kraken building, but in this cases, bricklink helps me out :-)

I'm an planning to make a comic or a small movie about a ship and a kraken, so i think I only need tentacles and a lot of teeths for the mouth, I think that's not very difficult to do(the most difficult part will be breaking the ship :'-( ).

In building my Kraken model, I figured the best approach was to *not* show more than was necessary. The unknown is a lot scarier than the known.

In terms of building, I built up the water around the tentacles to hide the joints. Tentacles could be built from click hinges linked together (but they would be pretty thin) Another approach would be to thread 1x1 round bricks with flex tube - graceful curves can be done that way, and you can make larger tentacles with 2x2 round bricks.

Teeth? Viking horns. Putthem on clips or in the Technic bricks in the studs. The 1x1 plate with tooth is another idea. The problem with the Kraken is that it is a mostly boneless thing, and LEGO is tough to model.

Black tenticle parts on bricklink are very cheap. Usually around $0.02-0.05 a piece. You should look at getting some.

You're right - squid don't have teeth, They have a beak.

The Kraken has teeth, like the Sarlacc...but I hadn't seen the movie when I was building so I went for the hidden look:

I just thought I'ld mention that squid have both a beak and chitonous teeth on a tongue like structure called a radula.

and most even have teeth like hooks on their sucker rings.

Also note that the tentacles are really called arms. The 2 true tentacles, and only in cuttlefish and squid, are the long grasping limbs. The difference is commonly enterchangable, but if you want to be more accurate...

I realise that, and thats cool, but I felt it may be usefull to others and hopefully inspire some more beast mocs from others. Using movies for inspiration is great and I don't have any objections againts it, but don't limit your mocs to hollywood versions. I try to use anatomical realism at least in form if not size, but it need not be limted to existing creatures either.

I geuss my point is that it should be as realistic as possible, at least in morphology, as lego can get. that is if you have access to a good lego inventory.

Yes you're right, we shouldn't limit our MOCs on hollywood versions, however the DMC kraken comes quite close to the norse mythology version and that is the origin of the kraken. However you was quite useful mr Ghoulrealm
