highlandcattle Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 special christmass train. Just seen this on lugnet but nobody knows a thing about it. http://www.br-eng.info/words/?page_id=29&ins_qry=10173 http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/spacekad...ets/10173-1.jpg Quote
Hobbes Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Interesting. Looks like a christmas train. Set number and box design fit 10177. The color scheme... needs getting used to... but a steam engine, 4 wagons (including the tender) and 7 minifigs make quite a big set... Quote
xwingyoda Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 G Lego Designers should stay away from that white powder that cost a hell of a lot :-| How to take the classic train (great) and modify it with stinking Chrismasy colours !! It makes me want to puke :-X It seems that all those new crappy sets are for the US market (where Chrismas means so many greens bills and not trees :-| ) I sincerely hope its not an actual set !! If that continues at this pace, we should have a special Anti TLC week forum :-D Seriously in less than a week we had: * the "joke" of comic con * the crappy Boing 787 * and now that G Time out please and announce good sets please !! *yoda* Quote
sam89 Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 I think it's pretty good. I'm not really a fan of trains, but other than the bright colours, I like the set. So we've seen two new sets in a day, hopefully we'll see the new SW sets soon! Quote
highlandcattle Posted July 24, 2006 Author Posted July 24, 2006 xwing yoda you are so negative today :) this trainset looks amazing it's the best looking steemloc since the 12volt days and if you look at the plans you'll see you can take of the christmass decorations quite easly. The trees are always handy and so is a skateboard and moto. The only thing i can't get it is the "evil" looking minifig in the passengercoach. if this train is not to expensive I will buy it!!! Quote
xwingyoda Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 highlandcattle, Yes I am a bit pissed by TLC for the reasons I put forward !! I agree that the design of the train is nice even if its a slight redesign of the old classic "My Own Train" sets. What truly aggravates me is that this set represents TLC's "Christmas special" on a big sets - meaning: * the colours are horrendous: sure you can always mod the set but since TLC has to put tan and blue in all SW sets it finally costs a fortune to mod all these babies !! For once I wish a set that is just perfect in terms of colours !! Its really pretty rare for me !! The A-wing is a great example of great colour scheme with no apparant tan or blue. * Its clearly intended for the US market (like the beautifull Boing 787) and that annoys me because TLC is a European company and Europe is its biggest market !! Hope that made my point of view clearer ;-) Do not worry, I can make loads of compliment to TLC when they do great sets like the beautifull UCS AT-ST and UCE Batmobile ;-) *yoda* Quote
gylman Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 As a non-train fan (I have a Metroliner Legends release that is likely to sit unused in my storage area forever), I can say that this set is more than likely to end up as our Xmas display set, and likely will make me buy the train station too (10027 I think),which until now I had no reason to buy. It all depends on who you are marketing to. If you are marketing to a NON-train fan, or children and their parents, at Xmas-time their perspective will be different. I am more likely to buy this set than the 787. Now, once again, we await the price point wiht trepidation...... DON'T BLOW IT TLC Quote
birdie100 Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Well... there's going to be huge numbers of disappointed people if Lego release this as it is... the train has no motor! Now... this is understandable to keep the costs down... but I'm expecting there to be several crestfallen faces on Xmas morning when it doesn't run on the rails... not a good situation for TLC to put themselves into.. Quote
xwingyoda Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Well, the "My Own Train" sets had engines without the motor ;-) The Super Chief and BNSF also are motorless ;-) I'm pretty sure that the instructions will provide for adding a motor like they did for all the motorless engines ;-) *yoda* Quote
birdie100 Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Nope... engine and tender have three sets of wheels... but it can't be a fake, particulalry as the instructions include the "put together" wheel base systems... I mean, I just see a push along train for christmas morning being an unitelligent move, particualry with the move to the RC trains. If parents are going to buy for their child, if the train set moves, they'll buy it oer a push along train. Quote
gylman Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Agree - big mistake if no motor! What's the cheapest way to get one of the new motor (RC) systems? Quote
optimus-convoy Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Looks like a pretty nice train. I probably won't buy it though. ;-) Quote
oo7 Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Looks like a pretty nice train.I probably won't buy it though. ;-) Same here. I like the idea and the color looks off in the picture. I am curious to the toys in that second to last car, looks like it has lots of cool pieces. A big lego set carring mini lego sets :-D . EDIT: for anyone who didn't notice this I believe it's 115 cm or 45.28 in long Quote
alex54 Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 I dislike this set! It is a my own train mixted with a christmas juce! And I don't think that us, Europeans, will see it on shelves. It's not a problem for me (contrary to the sponge bob sets :'-( ). Has TLC lost its sens of imagination? maybe... IMO (thanks xwingyoda for the glossary link!), it is stupid to sell a train without traintrack. even if it has no motor, you could push it around the christmas tree. without them, it will be more difficult to make it turne around! Quote
gylman Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 A train with no train track? No motor? OK, so if TLC wants to sell this, who will they sell it to? People who already are train fans? Doubt that, since they seem to all hate this. People who are not train fans but TLC wants to start to buy trains? Well, if they have to shell out double the money for motor and track, they won't buy it. Or, they won't know that they have to, and then will be mighty pissed on Xmas day. So, I repeat my questions to you train cogniscenti - what's the cheapest way to get this Xmas train to be useful on Xmas day - with a track and motor? Please advise. Quote

Please advise. Depends on what you want to do: 1. With one of those new packs of tracks (8 curves/8 straights) you have a decent oval to push it around. That'd be the cheapest way. 2. I read somewhere that RC equipment will be available seperately but I don't know which (motor, receiver, control...). Depending on which it will be you could make it RC. That's the not-so-sure-if-possible-at all-and-if-how-expensive way. 3. The most expensive way would be to buy 9V track, a 9V motor and a speed regulator. It's the most fun way, though. 9V accessories are still available now, but who knows what fall/winter will look like... Quote

Well, if someone has never been into trains before, it woudl be kinda self defeating to start with 9V trains now that they are being phased out. Maybe a used RC on eBay.... they haven't been around long enough to get into significant eBay resale cycle, but maybe by Xmas... Is the old 9V track compatible with RC? (i.e., just use it as track, not a power source). Any reason not to buy a buncgh of that used from eBay? Quote
Hobbes Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Well, if someone has never been into trains before, it woudl be kinda self defeating to start with 9V trains now that they are being phased out. True. Just thought I'd mention it. It is possible to start with 9V now, though. Ebay will have 9V accessories for a long time, just look at 12V stuff. But you have to "know your way around LEGO resources". For the occasional buyer it's not the right choice. Maybe a used RC on eBay.... they haven't been around long enough to get into significant eBay resale cycle, but maybe by Xmas... Given their quality they should be on ebay one day after you buy 'em and recognize the quality >:-) Is the old 9V track compatible with RC? (i.e., just use it as track, not a power source). Yes. Any reason not to buy a buncgh of that used from eBay? No. They're more expensive, though. In Canada the regular price for 8 track is CAD 17.99 which is pretty good (only the US are cheaper at USD 12.99). It's hard to find a better per piece price on ebay. If you do, though, take it. Here in Austria the regular price is out of the question (EUR 17.49) so ebay or BL are your choices. Quote
gylman Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Thanks Hobbes. I'll check it out. Seriously, although it may suck for the hard-core train fans, the Xmas train might actually be a real show stopper at our house. We have never done train before mostly because it seemed like a bottomless pit of money I would fall into, but maybe this year we'll do the train together with the advent calendar. Xmas is the best Lego tim at our house, not only because I get to buy some for everyone, but becuase I actually have the time to play with it with my kids. Quote
highlandcattle Posted July 25, 2006 Author Posted July 25, 2006 Well, I'm a train fan and I like it.For me this will be running on 12v track The only problem I see is that it isn't designed to be turned into a motor train so it will need some modifications. Quote
Jipay Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 If the set is cheap, I'll buy it, mainly for all the figs and the goodies (apples, trees and such). I think they could have done better in term of design for a X mas train though... Quote
gusmoore17 Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 *wacko* Hold on a second!!! Isn't Boeing 787 set number 10177???? Why this Xmas Train has also the UCS number 10177??? Anyway, it is still very nice :-D Quote

The recent outsourcing and production changes show this more than ever. Americans did not complain about the Maersk Sealiner set even though Maersk is based in Europe. Decisions on promos have much more to do with the other company and not LEGO. Boeing probably approached LEGO for a set while Airbus did not. Quite a few airline companies have the 4032 Passenger Plane Promotional Set. KLM had a very nice model, 4778 Bi-plane last year. LEGO is frequently producing sets along with various companies, including many in Europe, when those companies want sets. On the train I agree with you that the colors are a strange choice. I do not think that all of the licensed sculptures are great. I find the UCS Batmobile very blocky and with less detail than I would hope. Ben Quote
