snefroe Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 this doesn't really look like a promo set though, and i would even be surprised if Boeing were to ask a relatively small toy company on US soil to do this for them. I think it may be a "Ferrari" type of license... maybe we'll be getting other sets as well... let's hope for a B-17 or so... :-) it also reminds me of model kits, however, if they're interested in getting model builders on board, then they'll have to: 1) do a LOT better than this, more like the flyer or the red baron 2) select more popular model planes, like military legends... in this case, i'd think they wouldn't have many problems with the military aspect... i think it's clear that these models are not to play with, not for kids... It's just very badly done (or wrongly promoted since IMHO it looks more like a "DC-x from the 1950s"). Of course, military planes are more popular but a 787 is a brandnew plane and should attract some attention. I just don't hope it's a "scheme" where a badly designed set would be a basis for arguments like "Since our 787 model didn't do well we decided to not continue a model builder line". I doubt it but since the obvious sell-out of 9V despite promises to keep it parellel to RC trains nothing would surprise me anymore... Quote
Jipay Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 well, let's say the model is. Erm well. I think it's a shame that the city airplanes look better. I also share your concern about the interpretation Lego will do of the (without any doubt bad) future sales. I think that snefroe is right about the war plaines Quote
snefroe Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 LEGO is a global company. The recent outsourcing and production changes show this more than ever. Americans did not complain about the Maersk Sealiner set even though Maersk is based in Europe. Decisions on promos have much more to do with the other company and not LEGO. Boeing probably approached LEGO for a set while Airbus did not. Quite a few airline companies have the 4032 Passenger Plane Promotional Set. KLM had a very nice model, 4778 Bi-plane last year. LEGO is frequently producing sets along with various companies, including many in Europe, when those companies want sets. On the train I agree with you that the colors are a strange choice. I do not think that all of the licensed sculptures are great. I find the UCS Batmobile very blocky and with less detail than I would hope. Ben **** whining alert**** let's take this European-American thing just a little bit further shall we? sure, the Maersk boat is a clear reference to the Danish company. after all, it would be very weird if Maersk were to ask the Canadian Megablock to build them a ship... That would even be bad for business! the thing is that all licenses are based on US cuture or because they do well in the US. Spongebob and Avatar are even especially created for the US! What does Europe get in return? we represent 60% of the market so we should have 4 exclusive European based licenses. We have ZERO! None what so ever! Take the general licenses. Batman, Spiderman. Again, cartoons that are part of American culture and we, Europeans, just have to swallow it... Where is Tintin? Where's Ast Quote
alex54 Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Go back to the train! I see one very good point to this new set... The minifigs will have children! In fact, there is a very rare minifig noweday, a woman! Quote
natelite Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 i used to love tintin and asterix when i was a kid. too bad the vibrant characters would die in a lego world. i'm not sure if you notice but in lego everyone is practically the same size. how would you make the many different shapes and sizes characters in asterix? the only thing that is of common size would be the roman soldiers. hmm, on second thoughts maybe they should make a barbarians vs romans asterix theme! :-D Quote
gylman Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Continuing along a previous (TRAIN RELATED :-/ ) line of discussion.... it seems to me that it would be easier to motorize this train with 9V than with RC, as the RC engines are significantly bigger. Is that correct?? Quote
Hobbes Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Continuing along a previous (TRAIN RELATED :-/ ) line of discussion.... it seems to me that it would be easier to motorize this train with 9V than with RC, as the RC engines are significantly bigger. Is that correct?? The "problem" with RC is that you not only need to modify the model with the motor but with the controlling mechanisms, too. Meaning, you need the special baseplate with the battery holder/receiver. Perfectly shown here and here. With the Xmas train you could only modify the passenger wagon, which is... well... Motorizing it with 9V takes a lot less model modifying. What I remember from browsing through the instructions posted in this thread the motor should easily fit the locomotive or the tender (both use a 3-wheel base). That'd be all the modifying necessary. The rest is tracks, connection cable and speed regulator. Quote
Hobbes Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Well, you'll make a 9V man out of me yet..... Good! Mission accomplished ;-) Quote
natelite Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 can you do a tutorial on that hobbes? i may just get a train set for christmas... :-D Quote

xwingyoda Posted August 4, 2006 Posted August 4, 2006 Timmy, Do not excuse yourself for your English ;-) Its perfectly understandable. I am sorry if you took my previous post in a wrong way. It was not directed at you at all !! I didn't even know who highlandcattle was talking about. I just said that it happens that people for some silly reasons lye to make themselves important or what have you ;-) Especially since this set was suppose to be announced by TLC mid august ;-) So I effectively thought that it was weird that someone already bought it !! Once again I do apologise if you took my post personnally :-$ Will you do a pic review by any chance ?? That would be great of you to do one Timmy ;-) *yoda* Quote
Timmy's Posted August 4, 2006 Posted August 4, 2006 Accepted no hard feelings, tjust asking ;-) Perhaps i can open the book a little bit for you. I dont exactly know if its treu, here it is: The set i own is 1 of the 53 sets which are produced as a test and where ment to gife away to more important people then i am. A gift. By mistake the sets came to Bilund LEGOland and they tjust start selling it. You have a good change that the new production is not exactly the same. Want to download the buidinginstructions? This will gife you a good idea howe the train looks like. http://assets.lego.com/bigdownloads/buildi...ons/4502478.pdf Have Fun Timmy *sweet* Quote
highlandcattle Posted August 5, 2006 Author Posted August 5, 2006 Wow , suppose they never make a full production run of this, then you'll be a happy puppy timmy!! Quote
