Mr Man Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 I am proud we pretend to have a chance in sport even though we are bad in most sports. We normally lose because all the teams we play in any sport will probably have being in The Empire at some point and will take great pleasure in beating us. (BTW: The largest Empire on Earth ever ). Cousins in the old country. From Canada isn't the 'old country' either Scotland or France ? And we in general are bad at football as well as English grammar No capital letters and no full stops. Looks like we are bad at grammar . Edited June 16, 2011 by Mr Man Quote

My point was this thread is mainly full of people slamming other folks spelling and grammar... Is it really that important? The forums are full of a diverse and rich tapestry of users... why must we accost each other in the way we do???? And, just asking, but isn't spam when someone advertises something you didn't invite them too? Quote

Well, we are a nation of (mostly) good-natured piss-takers, what did you expect from a thread titled 'Where we are proud to be British'? Quote
Scorpiox Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Wooo! A topic to be British! I buy my LEGO from Amazon, Ebay (for old LEGO) and argos. The weather was great yesterday, in the morning it was miserable but brightened up later on. Hopefully we'll have some nice weather for the weekend. BTW what football teams do you guys support? I'm Spurs all the way! Quote

Mr Man Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 Yeah but you get used to it in British sport. Yeah, but not football, we are great at that, we won the world cup er... once . Quote
Gregorovich Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Yeah, but not football, we are great at that, we won the world cup er... once . England, maybe, but not us . We don't even get into the world cup, never mind stand a chance of winning! Quote
KateB Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Too many people to quote, I don't really have a good reason for wanting to live there. I am just fascinated by what I see. I know it's a premature not thought out thing to say, but until I experience it, it's the greener grass on the other side of the fence for me. As for the accent comment let me apologize for my ignorance on the topic. As an american I have an idea in my head of what a british accent is and I'm sure it's what most americans view as a british accent, and I honestly like out, again probably just because it's do different from what I'm used to. Irish accents come in a close second for me. I meant no disrespect and fully admit I am uneducated in what I'm talking about, but those are my thoughts based on my experiences. Ahh, to be British. Well reading the posts on this topic we British folk really do come off as rather grumpy buggers but then I think that is a fair statement really. It's not surprising though considering the amount of rain and rubbish weather we have to put up with during August, which is supposed to be Summer! The most annoying thing about the British weather I would have to say is the complete unpredictability of it. You can leave the house at 9am and it's sunny and warm with not a cloud in the sky. 2 hours later it's cloudy, miserable and raining - pah! Sometimes I hate being British and wish I lived in the states but yes, I agree, the grass does usually appear greener on the other side but invariably turns out not to be. America seems to produce all the best stuff which I always end up having to buy and get imported. Don't even get me started on the thieving toe-rags at Customs & Excise. I wonder if a lot of Americans think we are quaint and love the idea of the Royal Family, they are certainly a great tourist attraction, but that is where their usefulness ends unfortunately. I always used to find it funny how, at least up until recently, whenever an English person was protrayed (either by an actual English person or an American doing a woeful attempt an an English accent) in American films or TV, they either had a 'queens English, plum in your mouth' accent or a cockney one. (Anyone remember the horrific example with one of the baddies in Tango and Cash?) There are plenty of nice things about being British but I can't quite think of many at the moment except for: - Lots of rolling hills and moors/dales - Free health service (yes, well, it is free so who are we to complain) - Plenty of History - Heinz Beans - Cadburys chocolate - We know how to spell colour and pronounce aluminium correctly That's it, I've run out of ideas now. The Crazy One Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 (edited) This makes me proud to be British: Cricket. Oh yeah, that's right, top of the world! Anyway, I'm having tea at the moment and I feel like talking about the Premier League. Edited August 25, 2011 by The Crazy One Quote
22kane Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 I used to think when I was younger that I should have been born British. I have English/ Irish heritage but that's it. You guys have some of the best music ever- Squeeze, the Smiths, Morrissey, Joy Division, early Happy Mondays... I could go on forever and I actually like the weather there. Ahhhh, the grey slate skies of Manchester... Quote
Brainbox Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 That's it, I've run out of ideas now. How about the BBC, Doctor Who, Brian Blessed, Thunderbirds et al, many excellent British real ales, fish and chips, a fine tradition of silly local newspaper headlines, an education system that uses the much easier to understand "years" instead of "grades", Shakespeare, the Mr Men and Little Miss, Roald Dahl, Douglas Adams, brilliant music, black pudding and pantomime? Oh, and me of course. Quote

Oh, and me of course. Oh yes, I'd forgotten about fish and chips! Oh and a decent cup of tea. I agree with you on some points, especially Mr Men & Little Miss, Roald Dahl and the education system but as for the brilliant music and pantomime - gah! I've only watched about 1 thing on BBC in the past 5 years even though that's what we pay our TV licence for! I think watching 30 years of american sitcoms and films has erased 75% of my British-ness! ...and if anyone mentions Eastenders or Coronation Street I will scream Quote

In my defense, I was thinking more of older music than what's coming out now. That's not my thing, so much. ...and if anyone mentions Eastenders or Coronation Street I will scream I think they make non-Brits pround to not be British. Quote
