skinkfem Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 i was going to say something about the promixity of the fuel stations but then i remebered that the closest town to where i live has a crossing with a fuel station i three corners of four so meh cant really say that as the real world is even worse. other than that i can only complement on the houses. they add much to the town, take rather few pieces and seems very playfriendly. highlandcattle Posted October 25, 2006 Author Posted October 25, 2006 Like Alex54 I want my houses to have an open backside, so that they resemble real lego sets. I want to give it an illusion of real, but not built exactly human to minifig scale. But more like the "legoland style" of the eighties. On the other hand there is reality I have to deal with : money. because I don't have many bricks yet I have to compromise on design. But having a limited number of bricks also sparks creativity On the desgin end I want a bit of a dreamy Town with a big mixture of styles and culture. To make it cute but still believe-able. Quote
Darthking623 Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 My new city pictures are here!I'v collected them in a handy photobook for you guys to enjoy. Comments are very welcome! http://flickr.com/photos/highlandcattle/se...57594343328339/ I think u should add some emergancy services or some trains. Quote
Minifig Lecturer Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 I think you need more roads, some more bricks perhaps and maybe trees if it is possible. What happened the second corner and straight baseplates? Did you get some of this lego second hand or has some been lost? I also think the pink paradisa set isnt great - just the colour doesnt fit in well in a town - i mean most 'normal' 8- Quote
Hobbes Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Trains are always good but a bit expensive. I think you could spend money better EXCUSE ME?!?!? You're walking on thin ice here, my friend! >:-) Quote

alex54 Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 It reminds me of my town when I was a child! And this because there are just few houses. And it gives a town a smart touch. I really like the octan gas station! Just hope to see a new one like that... A road plate would be great to connect the octan station to the crossing. Quote

Minifig Lecturer Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 not the rc trains But the batteries Darthking. batteries :-X I'm not fond of them. The good thing is highlandcattle has trains (alledgedly) :-) Quote
PaulC Posted December 2, 2006 Posted December 2, 2006 Time to revive this thread now I've got some pics to show. I've been working on a giant city layout (in my head mostly) for some years now. I'm finally starting to realise a very small part of it in actual bricks. The photos of my first city block start here: These buildings are still not quite finished and will continue to be fixed and tweaked. They also include my homage to sets 1620 and 1592. I never owned these and always wanted to, so I've built my own version to be the "old" part of the city. Also, for those that missed it, here are the photos of my previously posted Brick Street Customs garage (based on 8681 Tuner Garage): Quote
Asuka Posted December 2, 2006 Posted December 2, 2006 If this is the begin I really would like to see your whole city when finished. It Quote
Minifig Lecturer Posted December 2, 2006 Posted December 2, 2006 These are great Paul. Loads of detail. The cinema is cool *y* But I don't know about the films X-D Nice detail on the traffic lights too, esp the push buttons for pedestrians! Post more soon! Quote

alex54 Posted December 3, 2006 Posted December 3, 2006 Nice work! I like to see 4 building on a 32x32 baseplate, thet gives a good density to the buildings. Just wait and see the next buildings... Quote
SalvoBrick Posted December 3, 2006 Posted December 3, 2006 I really like those buildings, and expecially the garage :) My town is almost finished, I will post some pictures soon. Quote
PaulC Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 So many responses! Thanks to Asuka and UltraPrime for your kind comments. As for the rest... These are great Paul. Loads of detail. The cinema is cool *y* But I don't know about the films X-D Nice detail on the traffic lights too, esp the push buttons for pedestrians! Post more soon! Actually the cinema is kind of a multi-purpose theatre that can show films and stage shows. This week is a magic show, next week a Star Wars retrospective! I'm sure they'll show something more to your taste soon. That's real good looking paul! The interior of the theatre is almost finished, but I'm not yet completely happy with the roof. I'll post more pics when I'm done.Nice work! The way I'm planning my city, each 'block' will be on a 32 x 32 stud base, with a grid of streets in between in the American style.I really like those buildings, and expecially the garage :)My town is almost finished, I will post some pictures soon. I had a look at the pictures on your thread, and a lot of your buildings have exactly the look I'm aiming for. Nice work! Quote

Any chance of some better photos of that big fire truck? Quote
simonwillems Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Posting my city as well... Though this layout is not really big, it still took me a full week to complete. It is my first town with a monorail, and instead of putting it on big ugly black supports I thought it might be a good idea to integrate the track into the streets. Therefore I had to raise the entire scene by one brick, allowing the track to be on the same level as the cars on the streets. I used only legobricks to do this (mostly technic beams, and thick baseplates). It took nearly all my baseplates, because there have to be two layers: the bottom one with big gray baseplates, soccerfields and tan baseplates, and off course the regular streetplates on top. The train runs smoothly throughout the layout, underneath the castle-ruin I made a second stop so that the train can be completely hidden in the tunnel. It took some time to figure out what space the train needed, and all the buildings, fences and even flowers are placed accordingly. The start-stop switch at the red station is activated by turning the red seat in the center of the platform (the train will ride in the direction the minifig in the seat is facing). If I had had more rocks and straight rails I would have completely covered the space where the small bridge is in the back... If I only had.... I used tiles to connect the track, it is exactly four wide and fits perfectly between two baseplates. The red building that says Stadhuis in Dutch (translation townhall) I made by using a picture of a real townhall somewhere in the U.S. The firestation houses the 6340 laddertruck, this fits because the station has no backwall and so the truck is sticking out into the white building... I've been thinking about a similar approach for my regular train track. So far it's only in my head, though, and I don't know if I ever will try to actually build it. Even in my head it's way to complicated (for me) ;-) Great layout *y* Quote
