I think this thing just caused me to have an Accidental Discharge.;) Must... have... YOU UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE DARK SIDE!

And my gal has been put on notice that if we ever set up a household together, she's gonna have to make sure to leave room for this monster to be prominently displayed. I'm thinking a little light modding and hang from a ceiling beam... 8-lb. model, think 200-lb.-test monofilament fishing line will do?

Sorry, I can’t help with the 10030, although I’ve just weighed my UCS Falcon & shuttle to help with the weight/cost question. Mine are both currently bagged, so the weights quoted below include the original plastic packaging! However, results as follows:

UCS 10179 Falcon: Cost £350 new, weight 6298g = £55.56/kg

UCS 10212 Imperial Shuttle: Cost £246 new, weight 2918g = £84.83/kg

UCS 10221 Super Star Destroyer: Cost 350 new, weight 3500g = £100.00/kg :look:

Even with the high level of inflation, this appears to be a rather expensive set, but I’m still going to buy it

Has anyone noticed they have used the 2010 Professor Snape's head for the Imperial Officer?

Yeah, but they didn't in the end.

Only on the poster.

Admiral Piett has a different head in the set, doesn't he?

Wow, this thing is a monster! Those bounty hunters and the hologram were very nice touches. $400 is way too much for me though, so I will unfortunately be passing on this one.

Does anyone know how long this will be available?

It's anyone's guess, but in all likelihood at least a year. Average lifespan of a set is two years.

Admiral Piett has a different head in the set, doesn't he?

He does. It has fewer lines, I believe.

It would be cool to have somebody buy this set, and re-create the scene below TO SCALE: oh2.gif

*snip*

I see that and three words come to mind- marshall_bannana, Anio, and ACPin default_laugh_new.gif

Seriously, I'd love to see any of you guys give this a shot.

Agrred. On the "Play set" note we have got an ok scaled down bridge. May get some good photography there. I love the set, I find it stunning

Why $400 and not $300? ...The price on this set is just silly for what you get. ...Come to think of it, $300 would probably be too much given the lack of figures or real features. Size alone isn't a feature worth $100+. ...And whoever suggested that there should have been a full assortment of the bounty hunters was spot on! That would bring up the value. As is, this set is a shameful dud.

You're forgetting cavegod.

The piece count is over 3,000, and plenty of them are larger pieces, so I think $300 would be too low compared to modern sets. $325-$350 would be more appropriate. Edited by Brickdoctor

Dear all,

personally, I'm still undecided on buying or not.

To get to grips with the shaping I made a comparison of the official Lego SSD profile with SSD profile drawings.

One of my favorite SSD designs is Lasse_D his design: Lasse_D instruction website

That MOC has a very nice profile compared to the "real" SSD.

Kind regards,

Teddy

@teddy (or fellow dutch fans):

For me this set is a real must have, no matter the 400 euros.

But where is the best place to buy it? (I'm a n00b on UCS sets).

Place a preorder in the Lego shop, or buy from a (dutch) webshop?

Thanks

Joopsta.

Yes that is true. A friend in the stares is the best option.

Personally, I was lucky enough to live in the states for a couple of months last year and visited friends in the states a couple of times in the previous years, so I have bought a fair amount of my Lego in the states.

Though, I must admit, once I was used to Dollars Lego did seem to be expensive again.

Now, back in Euro land, I wish I had bought more, a lot more. :classic:

Official set and drawings:

[snip - let me tell you now that the drawings depicted in the Essential Guide are not always accurate depictions of the ships in question.]

To really get into how 10221 compares to the real thing, you may want to look through these and these. I think Aeroeza also had plenty of pictures of the studio model, and Lasse has already said a bit about the design:

Positive things:

- It is significantly smaller than mine, so kudos to LEGO for adding so many details at a relatively small scale.*

- 2 legs is a must for this set and hints at a slim frame, which again hints a very realistic depiction.

- No obvious bridge, which means they didn't oversize it. Yay!

- New bricks allow for a smooth front (unlike my zig-zag'ing)

- Lots of large plates with less studs. Ideally I would like it to be stud-free on the flanks, but this is good too.

- The upper wings consist of single planes, which is true to the original.

- The city looks well greebled, and it's impossible to redo the original which was more than 2 meters long (and made of smaller pieces than LEGO bricks)

Negative:

- The belly. It seems like it's flat, judging from the flat front.

- The sides are a bit high. Even my 1 brick high sides is a bit on the tall side compared to the original.

- With the big front leg, the city in the belly might be compromised :S

- With the flat front, the engine bay might not be shaped correctly.

- The sides don't get wider towards the rear of the ship. There should still be a slight wedge along the city.

*He later stated that the set was actually around the same size as his.

Sending large set oversea will be expensive. I did a quick check, using Millennium Falcon (10179) as an example. I figured both might weight the same. The estimate was about $100 to ship at the cheapest. That would bring the set to over $500 (more if local sale tax was applied).

Unless it's more than 400 euro in Netherlands, buying in USA and shipping may cost more.

don't have the money for this at all, but i think it's a lot better than many of you are making it out to be. i don't really care about the figures, that's not what you buy a set like this for. is it perfect? no, but it's still the best looking set on this scale that lego has ever made.
