Hopefully I'm not breaking any forum rules by digging this thread up from the dead

I came across this forum since I was a huge Lego pirate fan when I was a kid, and I was curious as to what sets came out after I had "grown out" of Lego's (temporarily of course, you never really out grow them!). I received the Black Seas Barracuda for Christmas when it first came out, and also got the Forbidden Island set for my birthday shortly thereafter. I absolutely loved this set, and this review brought back many, many fond memories. In fact, it inspired me to go dig all Lego's out of my parent's basement. My brother had the Caribbean Clipper, and we used to have great naval battles with the ships. I have the ship sitting on my office bookshelf now.

I've recently started shopping for Lego again for my own children, and it seems like none of the sets out now have the same feel as the older sets, especially something as epic as the BSB!

You might be, but that's a great story. I remember having battles with my two brothers long ago , those were the times. I too recently acquired the BSB, and I agree with you, sets today don't have the same feel.

I know exactly how you feel Mr. naf. I got the Caribbean Clipper for Christmas when it first came out. I agree that today's sets don't have the same feel as the old ones we all know and love. But this does not make them worse. It's more a matter of nostalgia. We always tend to treasure those things we remember from childhood. I consider BSB to be among the best LEGO sets that were ever released, regardless of the theme. Perhaps even no. 1. The great thing about the old sets is that they haven't disappeared in any way! If we've kept them since childhood and still have them, good for us! If we don't have them, we can always buy some used ones - most of them aren't that hard to find.

Have you seen 10210 Imperial Flagship? It's from 2010 and it's pretty close to BSB quality wise. It does not make you feel as nostalgic as the BSB, but give it 20 years or so and it will.

Yes, the 10210 was the first new set I purchased after coming out of my dark age. I paid well over retail for it, but I'm glad I have it and didn't wait too long as it's going for even more money now than what I paid. I haven't had the time to build it yet unfortunately. Since it's new it'll definitely have a different "feel" to it, and won't have the nostalgia factor that BSB has, but I think it still captures that charm the older pirate sets have. It's time to make new Lego memories as an adult collector!

I already had BSB, Caribbean Clipper, Forbidden Island, and Harbor Sentry from when i was a kid. I just bought a used Eldorado Fortress, which is a set I always wanted back then, and also the smaller Imperial Flagship. Once all are completed I should have a nice little Lego pirate scene displayed!

This was my first big Lego Xmas set for 94 or 95 can't remember. I loved it, so much that I stayed behind and built it all day while my family went out for a party. I want to play with this again, just because I am a Lego guy that just follows instructions, so when I saw the alternate builds I could never get them right... Since I have grown I want to dare my self and rebuild the alternate models and see if I could do it.

Although the review is fine and you have memories related to that set please have in mind that the post you were replying to was in fact some 7 years old.

Eldiano, I also have not ever built the alternate model. I have built a MOD of this set with updated bricks etc., but I worked very hard to keep the fine lines of the BSB the same as the original.

Captain Braunsfeld, I suggest that you read through the link that covers topic bumping more clearly. I apologize for the confusion Eldiano. I do believe that I have found a way to remove the confusion of posting in old topics soon among the Pirate Staff and to the other members of EB.

3. LEGO reviews don't date. Thus if you have something relevant to say then feel free to post in a topic, but if it's more than a few months old please make sure it's good.... and if it's been a few years it better be really good! For example, if you liked the review or set and want to say so you probably shouldn't. If you've got an answer to a question (such as "Does anyone have pictures of the alternate model?) then by all means post! What you shouldn't do is ask questions to the original poster; he/she may not even visit EB any more.

I'm just nostalgic about the Pirates line, sorry guys, ever since I got the new sets, I haven really opened them, I am just wishing I could find a picture gallery of the older sets, since I am so obsessed with the entire pirates lines. Every chance I get I look throught the entire pirates forum and re read all of them!

Key thing is that I was born in panama, so I grew up near the ruins of portobello, and realized that the Lego pirates hits right at the spot, I like the lore, but disliked the looting and pillaging, since they were brutal. I wish I could dig around old Spanish ruins from the old world, but Lego sets hits the right spot.
