peterab Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 And ... what is really new with this train? That one is plain vanilla stuff put together, or what did I miss? Might be a red battery box (well I am not convinced, used black stickers on the box before and oh my they stick well) - yeah - what else is the kick? All pieces that I see are readily available and might be in you collection already. Did anybody try to build this train from scratch with existing pieces? Regards, Thorsten Well the red 2x6 train windows will be very helpful to me. Take a look at the price of the Santa Fe windows to see why I haven't got any. I've been told by someone who's seen this train, and had input during it's design; the battery box is molded in red. Very useful for future MOCs, far more so than the grey battery box. The rest of the set might be a bit plain vanilla, but I'm pretty sure I've heard you say in the past, sets are just collections of pieces we can use to create anything we want. In that case there's no reason to be critical of others excitement of this set, after all if we are both being creative your needs are not likely to be the same as mine anyway. Quote
AussieJimbo Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 (edited) I usually buy multiples when I can afford it for MOC'ing and/or running longer trains so I already have a 3 each of the current passenger and cargo train sets. I know I can bricklink but I prefer to pick up sets for the extra PF bits and the possibilities that emerge from having multiples of the rarer parts and regular pieces the sets contain. My reasons for buying when budget/special offers allow: - A great new shunter loco, all the recent locos have been main line units of one kind or another. - Another set of PF bits including that nice new red battery box. - Cool and useful pieces like the red windows, stand-alone rails, conveyor belt. - I like the cars and having multiples would be nice. I don't see it as a bad thing that the green boxcars are like the older RC-cargo train cars. They will fit in nicely but are built differently enough for variety. - More track. (I don't like the replacement of real curves with flex-track. All three (straight, curve, flexi) should be provided. I have plenty of curves but new train fans shouldn't be deprived of them.) - Don't really want another red passenger train, this is cheaper than another cargo train and gives me more varied wagons. I've been thinking about a pre-release MOD (like Toastie suggested) for a while now but haven't got around to it. The instructions haven't been released on-line yet but it looks fairly straight forward if I can find the parts in suitable colours, with green windows from the RC cargo train as the starting point. :classic: Edited July 6, 2011 by AussieJimbo Quote
Daz Hoo Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 More detailed pictures are also available on QuéLUG's Flickr account, since its designer, Pierre Normandin, was kind enough to bring it with him at QuéLUG's last meeting in April. If you look closely, you'll see that this set contains this piece in a new color: dark bluish gray. Quote

If you look closely, you'll see that this set contains this piece in a new color: dark bluish gray. I was wondering if he designed this. I saw on Railbricks.com a picture of him holding the Red Cargo Train. That makes it at least 2 official train sets designed by Canadian Pierre Normandin. Sweet. Brick On Pierre. Ben ps ... welcome to Eurobricks Daz Hoo. Edited July 8, 2011 by medib Quote

Pingles Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 So Toys R Us has them in stock before Lego does. Okay. Quote

Rob Klingberg Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 (edited) If you can find it in a Toys R Us store (or if they get stock back online) the set is "buy one get one 50% off" -- quite a deal! (Update: just called all the TRU stores in the Minneapolis area. All are sold out. I'm wondering how many locals on Eurobricks beat me to the local stores!) Pingles Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 When I first started going through this thread I was surprised by how many negative comments there were. Now they are appearing in stock and disappearing immediately. I guess a FEW people were impressed! I'll likely wait a few weeks. I try to make one purchase a month. Last few months I've been doing so on the first of the month. Ha. Quote
broomhandle Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 does anybody know if this is a TRU only? or will it be something thru LEGO? Quote
Masterbricker321 Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 This would make a great addition to my town, (soon to be a city) Quote
TypoCorrecto Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 It finally arrived from TRU. I have never done a review before, but I may attempt one for this set... Quote
roamingstop Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 (edited) It finally arrived from TRU. I have never done a review before, but I may attempt one for this set... Well... it arrives one day before mine (from S@H) so I guess you get to review first! (Save's me doing it, allowing more time for FUN!). Edited July 12, 2011 by roamingstudio Quote
Pingles Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Good. No "Toys R Us Exclusive" on it. Was worried when they were the only ones shipping here in the States. Quote
Darth Sutius Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 It finally arrived from TRU. I have never done a review before, but I may attempt one for this set... That would be greatly appreciated. I've not been this 'on the fence' about a LEGO Trains release for quite some time... I'd really like to see what sort of rare or unique pieces are in this set, as I'm sure others would too. Quote
Aanchir Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Good. No "Toys R Us Exclusive" on it. Was worried when they were the only ones shipping here in the States. It says "Special Edition" on it, which almost always designates a special edition set. I haven't seen an exclusive set with store-specific packaging in years. I'm pretty sure it's still a TRU exclusive even if it's not marked as such on the box. Anyway, I'm not a LEGO trains fan, but if I were to buy this set I think the piece that would most excite me would be these in Dark Stone Grey (BL's Dark Bluish Gray). Look on the yellow car carrying the rail maintenance vehicle. In terms of building techniques, I like the roof of the boxcar (simple, but effective), the way the wheels drop down on the rail maintenance vehicle (may have been done before, but I just think those little vehicles are so cool to watch in real life), and the design of the tipper car. The tipper car would be better if the walls rose up one module higher, but there's no way that could be done with the pieces that exist currently. Apologies if my terminology is bad, bad, bad. There's a reason I don't participate often in this subforum: I have absolutely no expertise when it comes to trains, LEGO or otherwise. Quote
Rob Klingberg Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 (edited) I went to my local TRU yesterday just to see if they even had a space on the shelf for the set. There was a LEGO employee there, sprucing up the shelves. I asked her if she knew when the set would be back in stock-- she hadn't even heard of it. She also said TRU typically gets most sets one month before the LEGO stores and other outlets-- she showed me her spiral bound catalog which had several products listed with release dates of August 2011, yet they were already there on the TRU shelves. Pingles Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 As someone relatively new here to AFOL Lego'ing I am curious if we have seen this type of behavior before from Lego. It sure seems odd to have a product already in customers hands before the company even formally announces it or explains what the availability will be. Does Lego have a presence on these forums? I'm not complaining, I just find it curious. Quote
hoeij Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 It sure seems odd to have a product already in customers hands before the company even formally announces it or explains what the availability will be. My guess is that they first want to produce more copies of this item before they start to advertise it. If they advertise it before having made enough copies, then a lot of people that try to buy it won't be able to get one within a reasonable amount of time. It's better to wait with offering it until you have enough copies to actually meet the demand. Quote
lightningtiger Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 Does Lego have a presence on these forums? Oh, they watch all the Lego-themed websites around the world, and EB is important to them..... just ask 'The Brickster' or 'KimT' or 'Hinckley'. Maybe this train is the result of all our asking for more trains and train stuff....well only Lego knows the answer to that statement. Quote
donut2k Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 I'll be at Legoland Billund next week, I hope I can get one to take home.. do you know if there is any way to check whats available at the store? or to contact the store in any way? cheers! Quote
