Piranha Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 Yep. And to get back on topic, I think we can all agree that this set is criminally overpriced in all respective markets. Seriously, not even a truck? Or a forklift...? Not really 7939 has 822 parts 3677 has 831 parts About 9 more parts for $20 less. 7939 has 42 track parts 3677 has 40 track parts The points are missing for $20 less, a set of points on LSAH or LEGO Store will cost you $16 + 4 extra curves. It is cheaper for us to buy the points (w/4 extra curves) than to buy 7939 that includes the points. 7939 has 4 minifigs 3677 has 4 minifigs PF parts separately cost $55 on LSAH. so for $105 I will take the 831 parts + track, right on par with other sets. Not to mention the red battery box cover which is useful. As well as adding diversity to the train range. I own 7939 and yes it is a cool set and 3677 compliments it very nicely. Quote

Hi Macoco, hehe, this IS some sort of business school type calculation, beating TLC's reasoning ... but you are using US prices, right? I could not follow through entirely considering I am living in Germany ... off topic again ... Í know ... Best regards, Thorsten Quote

Doing a price/part ratio comparison doesn't mean much in this case. A more realistic comparison would be to compare the weight of the two sets. But it's all academic, I know I'll ending up buying this set anyway because as you say it does compliment 7939 quite nicely. I just don't like that TLG will be laughing at me while I do so! Quote
Darth Sutius Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 How interesting...the set has disappeared off the Aus S@H completely. Wishful thinking is that they're rethinking their pricing strategy! Quote
Cwetqo Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Situation in Germany: 3677 - 150 euro 7939 - 170 euro 7938 - 109 euro All have: Battery Box - 14euro Motor - 14euro Reciver - 17euro Remote - 14,50eur = 59,50euro Tracks: Flexible - 0,40 euro Straight - 2,26 euro Curved - 0,70 euro Switch - 5,50 euro 3677: 16xFlexible - 6,40 euro 8xStraight - 18,08 euro 16x Curved - 11,20 euro =35,68 7939: 16xFlexible - 6,40 euro 8xStraight - 18,08 euro 16Curved - 11,20 euro 2xSwitch - 11 euro =46,68 7938: 16xFlexible - 6,40 euro 16xCurved - 11,20 euro =17,60 All have one trackside structure and 7939 also has additional truck 3677 - 150-95,18=54,82 euro (locomotive, 3 cars, gravel loader) 7939 - 170-106,18=63,82 euro (locomotive, 3 cars, crane, truck) 7938 - 110-77,10=32,90 euro(locomotive, 2 cars) So, it all scales pretty nicely: 1 train car (or locomotive) is around 11 euro, trackside structure is around 10 euro and truck is around 9 euro) 3677 = 4x11+10 7939 = 4x11+10+9 7938 = 3x11 (and you seem to get staton for free :) ) If you look at just cars/price ration then 7938 is the best option, although 3677 has better parts (windscreens) and 7939 is the best complete set. domboy Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 (edited) And there seems to be a further increase attached to this set too so I'll be surprised if this set turns out to be a best seller, especially with a far superior Cargo train still on the shelves. That of course is a subjective statement. I don't know what in your opinion makes 7939 Cargo Train far superior than 3677 Red Cargo Train (which is how I read your statement), but I have no interest in 7939, but I like 3677 Red very much. It's mostly the locomotive that makes the difference for me, but I like the rolling stock better too. The tanker from 7939 is alright, but then again, 10016 is a much better tanker. Track-side accessories and structures are ok, but I really think those should be separate sets, and make the train set primarily the train and some track. 3677 seems to do that better than 7939. My opinion of course. Edited July 20, 2011 by domboy Quote

The 7939 looks more like a European engine, and the 3677 looks more like an American engine. If some of us prefer 7939, and some of us prefer 3677, then it makes sense for lego to put both on the market. The tanker from 7939 is alright, but then again, 10016 is a much better tanker. That depends. I bought a 10016 tanker on eBay, but it did not fit well my 6-wide trains (the 10016 is 8-wide). So I ended up selling my 10016 on bricklink. Quote
cimddwc Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Interesting calculation, Cwetqo, but it's a bit off considering that this: 16xFlexible - 6,40 euro 8xStraight - 18,08 euro ...is available together in set 7499 for 16,99€ (MSRP; recently got a few for 12.99 on Amazon.de) Quote
Brickviller Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 (edited) The 7939 looks more like a European engine, and the 3677 looks more like an American engine. 3677 is clearly also an European engine, in the Netherlands and I believe in Germany these kinds of trains are/were very common. I've never seen an American engine that looked like this one Engine used in the Netherlands (and possibly Germany since Railion is part of DB Schenker) Edited July 20, 2011 by Brickviller Quote

I just took BL prices, which are higher. That means that trains a little bit more expensvie, but relations generaly stay the same. From this we can also see how expensive are maersk, TS3 and HP trains, which all come without tracks or PF parts. Quote

My opinion of course. I'm always looking at these things from a kid's point of view - as an AFOL I was always going to buy this anyway so whether it's better/worse than the last one is a moot point! Kids are the target audience after all. As an overall set, 7939 has more going on than 3677. A freight set not including switching tracks is criminal! As an AFOL I'd also prefer there were less/no trackside accessories and more rolling stock, but LEGO has to be able to convince a parent that this is a value-packed purchase for little jimmy. A big green crane seems a lot more impressive in that regard than an odd little ballast loader. Quote
TypoCorrecto Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 In other news... It's in stock for shipping at TRU USA: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11815467 I doubt it will be available on line for long... Quote
Traktor Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Does anyone know when the train will be available in Lego Stores in USA? I know it is possible to get one at toys are us, but I am one vacation here, so it is a bit tricky to get to one. It would be great to get one here, since they cost more than twice as much home in Norway and are almost impossible to get hold of. Quote
Pazoozoo Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 @Traktor: The availability of this set is really odd. On last monday, the set was available at least in France, I ordered it, received it yesterday. And since yesterday, the train has disappeared from the web shop. I have the chance to have it. It's still on the German site. I hope it will be wildly available next month. Quote

donut2k Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 I saw it on the spanish shop on monday, I left to Billund with my kids to LEGOLAND, it was not available there, it's not even on the catalog - July->December 2011, now I am ready to order and it has disapeared as well :( Quote
Brickviller Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 It is possible, without any modification, to use a Rechargeable Battery with the red cover: Just replace one 1x4 modified plate with 2 1x1 plate to attach the black disc. To open the Rechargeable Battery Box, forcibly remove the four screw covers on the bottom with a small flat screwdriver and remove the four Philips screws. Also remove both screws of the red battery cover. Replace the covers, put no screws back and insert into the engine. Drive well. Can you make some pics of how to open and replace it. I have a rechargeble one, but there are no screws at the underside so I do not know how to replace it Quote

Remove it from the screwdriver and repeat (times 3). Then unscrew the underlying Philips-screws and you're good. StephanSz Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I just heard from my dealer in The Netherlands, that 3677 is not (going to be) available for Benelux legodealers... Is there a Benelux dealer on this forum who can confirm this? Quote

Stefanwest Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Picked up my copy of the freight train today in Birmingam, Alabama Lego Store. Since there is a Lego Master Builder doing a master build of Buzz Lightyear here this weekend, the store got permission to go ahead and put train on sale today. Now I have something to do this weekend. Btw. Price of the train was $159.99. Quote
