ARRRGGHHHH!!!!

RANT ON:

Lugnet is so annoying. Why do those old dinosaurs who hang out there insist on that retarded message posting system? Why can't they go into the 21st century with one of the modern forum systems, like, say... Invision!

I know it's Usenet newsgroups, not a forum. So what? Usenet Newgroups were what I used in 1992 when I first got online, BEFORE the internet as we now know it even existed!!

I know there are those vast archives of old posts in those old newsgroups, etc, but how hard can it be to extract and archive that data and make it searchable. In fact, many newsgroups have full archives of all their past posts. There is software out there which does this.

That site is dying partially because of all the sociopaths who pick a fight over any little thing, but in equal measure because of the retarded system for communication.

Half the time I try to post it just disappears into the ether. Another quarter of the time it almost instantly goes up, and the rest of the time it takes days from message to when I can "authenticate" my post. The process is so painful that I only go there when i am truly desperate for information, and half the time I can't get my post up.

WHY?? WHY?? WHY???

So much information, such a great resource, and such a retarded antiquated, antediluvian, obsolete, outmoded, unnecessarily complex and unwieldly interface.

Maybe someone from EB who is more active at Lugnet than I am can explain this insanity to me. Or maybe they can relay to the admins (yet again, I am not the first, for sure) the stupiditiy of the current format and how it is contributing to the decline of this once great website.

RANT OFF:

Peace.

Gyl

...net. Ethernet ;-)

Use a newsreader. Outlook Express[1] is the easiest if you just want to post text. It's like writing an e-mail.

well perhaps they do realise that the system is old and outdated, but it may just be a too complex operation to change the system all together. besides, a forum like ours demands a different approach from a staff member than the Lugnet service. Take a look at what Phes is doing with Pirates section in order to get more pirates fans, perhaps staff members of Lugnet are just not ready for that...

For the amount of ADULTS on there, there's quite a bit of CHILDISH bickering.

Every site has quarrels eventually, but those guys get personal.

Why don't they upgrade? Because they're too proud to.

It could also be that after putting in so much mental energy into deciphering the interface, that they don't want to leave... as it would mean all the time they invested in it was put to waste.

Well, I don't want to judge everyone there just because a few infantile elitists can't believe they're not the center of the universe (Yeah, I'm lookin' at YOU, Eric Sophie!), but I do have to wonder why the "normal" people stay there to feed them.

Then again, alot of the good guys on there have bled out onto these more modern boards (Read: BETTER. EASIER. FASTER.)

But I'm not cool with their years of data being lost... here's EXACTLY what they should do:

1. LOCK UP THE OLD BOARD.

2. Create a modern board.

3. Link to the shitty, old board.

Or, as was already said, use some clever software to extract and implant all the old stuff into a newer interface... but I'm guessing that'd be a logistical nightmare, possibly resulting in accidental data loss.

All I know is, when I got into Lego a few years ago, people referred me to Lugnet as THE place for serious Lego discussion.

But to so so so so many people these days, they've turned into a horrible joke, with gags about elitism and morons wanting to copyright the word "brick".

Lugnet, I hear you were a grand thing at one time, but step into the future.

We're waiting for you.

It won't hurt.

It will in fact feel very sexy.

DON'T YOU WANT TO FEEL SEXY, LUGNET?

Lugnet recently transitioned to new ownership. The old owner would not give up control or even make needed changes so it all fell apart really. Give it some time it may turn around. The new owner will make things right I hope.

Not that I care much as EB is better set up anyway and way more laid back. Oh and best of all it is free!

A database is a database, no matter what. It's just lines and columns filled with text or links. I don't see the problem in making it accessible as an archive.

But anyway, no problem as our final goal is to surpass lugnet in every manner :-P

Feel free to add my initial post to anything pastedon lugnet.

The new ownership (German dudes from 1001steine ,no?) has been in effect for quite some time, and I see no change. Maybe they are planning to do something spectcular all at onces, and it takes some time to plan.

I'm not hopeful. There is no good will left in that community any more.

I used to use a newreader, but long since stopped. It was an online interface, though. I've not been successfu lin getting outlook express to work for me. Has anyone?

Trying to make everything at once is rarely sucessfull. I think it's definitly better to improve things step by step. It requiers less efforts and you are always on top ;-)

I don't get along with Lugnet either. I just prefer Invision/PHPBB/ANTHING new. It really annoys me when I have to wait for ages then to find I'm lost.

I much prefer EB, but that's a given. I too have noticed that over on Plugnet, named so after some of its members, that there are alot of fights and nasty people.

Thank the zoidbergs we're not like that here. At least, not yet. *alien*

1000steine[1] ;-)

AFAIK they just moved the data (the "board") on the german servers, nothing more. I don't think any other change was planned.

You can only connect to port 1119 now, not 119 anymore. Works fine for me.

[1] That place is slowly transforming into a german LUGNET, the same sort of childish bickering happening there more and more :-/

Well 1000 steine has turned like that ages ago. It was a slow but continuous process. I remember Apo being insulted about something there, not sure what it was, but I think was concerning a news on Eurobricks that was supposed to be fake by them (until it was out and true, but then, no excuses :'-) ). And 1000 steine should be renamed into 1000 Zug aswell :-P

Recently someone complained about morten's Emperor MOC since that guy's made one before, too (a bigger version). Didn't result in a discussion, but it made me wonder what these people think. I mean, if you build a scene from a movie and someone else does, too, chances are quiiiiiite high those MOCs look alike... like, du-uh... :-|

Although I don't mind, it is true ;-) But lately everybody's building the same stuff so it's not that exciting a place anymore...

Well Morten gave credit to another guy MOC in his introduction post so I don't see any problem. Those guys are just suckers, they should get a life (and a load of fun)
