Alasdair Ryan Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Hi guys, Finally I bought my beloved Unimog. I can't even describe how happy I am :) I'm not very advanced builder so, please tell me what is first modification that I should do to my 8110? Pat- Ard, I have to say that Your ideas are very inspiring :) Motorize it. You can find some ideas on how to do this in this thread. Quote
Pat-Ard Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Hi Kubavet, I really like the Unimog, too... And thanks for the compliment, but not all ideas are mine... There are a lot of other builders... And as Alasdair wrote above... Motorize it. It increases the fun! Pat Quote
afol1969 Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Hi Kubavet, I've just finished stepping and organizing Markus53' CAD file for an RC motorized Unimog with two gear automatic and freewheeling mechanism. If you want, send me PM, and I can send you a provisional PDF file. There are still text notes and photos to do for the complete instruction I'll publish online in further time, so it may be a challenge for your if you don't have much experience in technic, and my instructions are not LEGO-like (1 part per step). And surely you have to buy additional PF parts. But there are more simple ways if you only want to have driving and steering, just google and look on some youtube videos. Greetings Alex Quote
Kubavet Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Hi afol1969, Sadly I'm not allowed to send messages yet. Maybe because of my low count of posts. This is my e mail adress: danecki.jakub@gmail.com This way or another, I really aprecitate Your proposition. Thank You :) I'm sure that using a little bit harder instruction will give me a lot of expirience :) Kuba Quote
stefan_betula_pendula Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 (edited) Hi folks, some more stuff for the forestry Unimogs... Made a log trailer with a self steered fore axle... And here's a little video: https://dl.dropboxus...r_video_720.mov Have fun... Pat Nice one! I'm really surprised that this kind of simple mechanism works quite well and seems to be reliable in all kind of curves you drive with the Unimog. I would recommend to use a large LA if possible. The mini LA cannot handle much load. I will try to put this mechanism in my own trailer (post #1509). Hi folks, it's me again... Today I'll show you my signaling trailer. Yes, the old one, but now the lights are flashing. Thanks to Zmei_gorini4 who provided me with the LEDs and the circuit. The circuit has three modes. Left, right and only the top most LEDs flashing. Have fun watching. Pat Great, that gives your trailer a very unique touch! I also got my pair of beacons from Zmei_gorini4 this week. I hope I can make a video soon. Kubavet Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Please forgive me little off top, but I found something interesting for other Unimog lovers :) For some of You it will not be something new, but did You know that lego made some Unimog (not licenced) sets before 8110? For exaple 8848 or 8854. Quote
Pat-Ard Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Yes, I know these sets... But hey, don't mess with 8110 :-D And there are more Unimogs out there... Quote
Kubavet Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Of course they don't, but they are still Unimogs :).. It gave me hope that maybe we will see new Unimog set soon. Apparently Lego love them as much, as we do! As unexpirienced technic builder I have qestion. If I use one xl pf motor for drive (removing center diff, I wan't to connect it with shaft), will it be powerfull enough to make it AWD? Quote
Pat-Ard Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I don't know if Lego loves Unimogs. I think they prefer those big yellow digging and what ever machines... Don't know why... Why do you want to remove the center diff? There's a solution with a XL-motor which includes the center diff... Quote
Kubavet Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I think that's not their preference, but children. Don't forget that client makes market.. :) I just thought that if I leave central diff, i will lose 4wd, my mistake sorry. Quote
Pat-Ard Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Yes, but look at the Unimog or the actual mobile crane... These aren't really sets for children. My godson is nine years old, and he wasn't abled to build the Unimog on his own... Children like sets which can be assembled in a short period of time and which grant playability... Quote
Kubavet Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 You are probably right, I just had on mind that a lot children love to play with this kind of stuff- even if it's assembled by father or someone else :) This way, or another I see that, I have a lot to read in this thread :) Quote
Dion Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Is it possible to motorize the Unimog with M motors, because that's the onliest type of motor that I own. Quote
Pat-Ard Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Hmmm, I don't know, never tried it, but I think the M-motor isn't strong enough... Quote
peter_m Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I think it will work - but Unimog must not have any heavy attachments and it will only be able to move on straight surfaces. Quote
markus53 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 after some questions we made a little video of our 2speed automatic gear described earlier in this thread: Quote
Kumbbl Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 thank you very much - this explains and demonstrates the clever mechanism quite well... Quote
Kubavet Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Thank You, as my preciding speaker said it's very helpful Quote
afol1969 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Thank you very much, that will help me to solve the problems with my modified unimog. I should it take as addition to the instructions, for better understanding the mechanism. Greetings Alex Quote
bjorn77 Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 (edited) I'm about to build the Unimog and there's a few mentioned issues that I'd like to fix directly when building, and I'd appreciate some advice. I've read most of this thread and there's so many different ways of doing things, so I'm wondering if there's some kind of accepted "best practice" for adressing the following: 1. The poor steering (stiff, with friction and large turn radius) 2. Battery box not centered which makes the truck lean towards one side after a while. Other than these two issues, are there anything else you'd recommend me to do sooner rather than later? Thanks. Edited March 15, 2014 by bjorn77 Quote
Pat-Ard Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Hi bjorn, motorize it. It increases the fun. Add a second pneumatic pump and an air tank. Use two M-motors for the front and rear power outtake. Pat Quote
stefan_betula_pendula Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 (edited) The points Pat_Ard referring to are good ones. I also would recommend to change these things. For a better realism you also can add a pneumatic cylinder for tilting the dump bed. When looking at the battery box issue, with some modifying you can put the battery box behind the seats. But this may require the use of a smaller battery box: http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=84599, http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=87513c01 Edited March 15, 2014 by stefan_betula_pendula Quote
stefan_betula_pendula Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 (edited) I'm sure some of you are fed up with the Unimog and can't see it anymore... But here is a sneak preview of my overhauled Unimog U400 and my pneumatic tipping trailer. I also added rotating beacons provided by Zmei_gorini4. I will add some better pictures to my Brickshelf account later. Edited March 15, 2014 by stefan_betula_pendula Quote
