gylman Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 I'm curious which set people think is the most challenging Lego build ever. Obviously none are THAT challenging, since it's just a toy, but there is a difference between sets. Off the top of my head: original ISD 10030 Airtech Claw rig 8868 (sorry, had to throw it in. EVeryone knows it's my fav set) Large crane truck Statue of Liberty 3450 I'm sure I've overlooked some..... Quote
vahkimetru Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Now remember I'm a kid: 4502: X-Wing Fighter Took me a day! But hey, I was 8! Quote
Sir Dillon Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Well, I don't really have any huge sets, or Technic, but out of the sets I have, I would say the AT-AT. It was a real pain connecting the body part with the leg part. Quote
Starwars4J Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 UCS ISD. Those damn magnets never held it together well |-/ I bet the DS2 will be hard as well...if I ever get around to opening the box <_< However, since it doesn't involve magnets to hold huge, heavy portions of it together, I doubt it will be that difficult Quote
Berry Syedow Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 The UCS X-Wing. It didn't help that I was working in a cold garage (on a thin piece of brown carpet), past my bedtime, while a single dim lightbulb lit the area (hehe, after about an hour I was having trouble distinguishing between the white and grey.) I finished it and left it built for four years. :-P Quote
Jipay Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 UCS ISD. Took me one entire day, that was way too long, I couldn't even have any pleasure building it at the end. Same problem with the crapy magnets. Does anyone have the death star ? Is it also such a pain ? I also had troubles with that red technic rescue copter. I was young, so I dunno how it'd be now Quote
snefroe Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 sure, the isd takes a day to build, and sure, the fun is gone after a while, but the level of difficulty isn't very high... it's just too repetitive, too many sections that need to be build over and over again... the hardest thing i remember was the 8002 destroyer droid man! that was a pain in the neck!. first you had all these rubber bands you needed to apply to parts you could hardly reach with your hands, then you had lots of small lego technic parts and it all had to fit perfectly into the model or it wouldn't do what it was supposed to do. you could fold the head and arms into the main structure, forming a ball. and as in the film, you could roll it to the floor and at some point, when a specific part hit the ground it would open up, the arms would stretch into position, the head was supposed to go up... ok... that worked once i believe.... Hobbes Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Good to see I'm not the only one losing interest in building if it takes too long ;-) But I agree with sne that long building time doesn't necessarily mean difficulty. I haven't got any of the big UCS sets, so I can't confirm their building process. As for hardest build: I don't think I have one. It took me some time to build 8436 and 8421, but only because I haven't built Technic sets in a long time and had to get used to the new studless beams. And both sets contain tons of pins and connectors which are a pain time-wise. Concerning difficulty both sets were pretty straightforward. What's always bothered me, though, are sets with strings. I hate to tie strings, cos I don't want to lose too much length and try to tie the knot(s) as "short" as possible. That's a pain for me ;-) Quote
Jipay Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Good for you that there's no pirate sets anymore then X-D Quote
Hobbes Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Good for you that there's no pirate sets anymore then X-D Well, I did buy a SES last year, and if a BSB crosses my path at a reasonable price, I'll get it. There's just some sacrifices you have to make ;-) Quote
MattZitron Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Duplo still alludes me. :'-) But seriously I don't do UCS sets. But if System I'd probably say the Arc-170. In recent years that's the only set that I can think of that I had troubles with. The thing in sets that I always hate is tying string. So if a set has that it annoys me. And stickers!! DON'T GET ME STARTED ON STICKERS!!! Quote
agrotic Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 as a UCS and sculpture lover, I'll say this - UCS ISD - Death Star (hard tu put the upper part when the other one is in) - the Wright plane (those damn wings ...) the others are easy to do. quite a long time to put pieces together but no difficulties ;) the Force helps me when I'm in troubles with hard sets *yoda* Quote
alex54 Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 I also had troubles with that red technic rescue copter. I was young, so I dunno how it'd be now Me too! I was 7-8 years old, my first big technic set! all the mecanisms are hard for such a young boy IMO... Quote
JoeMI6 Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 I don't usually speed through builds, as I like to make sure I get it right first time. However, I don't usually have too much trouble either. I was a bit troubled by the Sailbarge recently (my biggest Lego set ever bought) as there were just so many pieces. It took me about eight hours (in between eating dinner). The stickers on it were a pain at first, but they are mostly all in similar places, so it was relatively easy. The latest Slave 1 was a bit frustrating also, but I soon got into the swing of it. I doubt I'd ever buy a UCS set, unless it was something like the AT-ST. Stuff like the ISD and DS II would just be too daunting and expensive for me. Quote
gylman Posted August 9, 2006 Author Posted August 9, 2006 LOL. These days the number of stickers on a set is the main determinant of how "hard" a set is to build. I remember the destroyer droid - that was tricky, I agree. The main thing about the big pneumatic sets is that you have to keep the various tubes aligned and keep track of them as the build progresses. When you do this from black and white Peeron instructions...... it can be a challenge. Quote

agrotic Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Stickers ... I hate stickers ! Since I was a young Child I never put them on my toys ... too risky for me (air bubbles, putting them at the good or symetric place, etc...) a sticker in a bad place makes toys look horrible to me. so... sets with stickers are not hard sets, because I don't do stickers ! Echo Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Hailfire Droid. It wasn't really hard, it just took a very long time to build. Quote
ImperialJohn Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Not counting hours here but diffeculty! 8480 Space Shuttle / "FOS Light" Space Shuttle 8002 Destroyer Droid Quote
captaintau Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Hailfire Droid. It wasn't really hard, it just took a very long time to build. I hadn't thought of that. Yes, it was a fun build, but certainly challenging. For building the weapons at the end, I found most of my technic axles were too short, which means I went wrong lots furing the build. I didn't have the energy to backtrack and put it right, I just used what I had and only put them in halfway. Quote
SuvieD Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 The hardest LEGO build for me is the MOC. -no instructions -no parts list -no picture to base off of Though it can be tough this ise for me the most rewarding build also. Quote
xwingyoda Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I didn't have a hardest Lego build per se (I still haven't build my UCS ISD) Some sets were really annoying to build: * Sandcrawler with those Horrible treads * All stickers that need to be applied make the build annoying (Exo, SW) * All what is repetitive (a lot) Some sets are pretty crappy to build tks to the misleading/bad colouring of instructions: * UCS Yoda * and I can't remember all of them :-D *yoda* Quote
Kikuichimonji Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 The Sandcrawler's threads were pure hell. I also disliked the wheel base of the Sopwith Camel. But that might be because it was technic :-P Quote
UltraPrime Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Probably Sandcrawler. Only set I have ever built that took 2 nights *vader* Quote
