Geertos13 Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 (edited) Hello Eurobricks! I haven't been posting something in such a long, long, long time! Mainly because I have been very busy and after a quite heavy and emotional periode I finally found the time to come back to the best and most warm hearted forum ever made, our dear Eurobricks! And, let's be honest, you can't just make a come-back with a little vignette, can you? So, after quite some time, some intensive building, and, obviously brickfilming, I am proud to present : HOGWARTS GREAT HALL That's right, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Great Hall! A pretty ambitious project so to say, but I wouldn't be Geertos13 if I wasn't up for a little challenge! After my huge Diagon Alley, I decided to go a little smaller. When I bought the new Hogwarts Castle, I came to the conclusion that the Great Hall wasn't that much of an improvement to the first ever Hogwarts Castle. It sure looked a lot nicer, and the design was quite beautiful, but the set just couldn't capture the magic the Great Hall deserved in my opinion. On top of that, they missed out completely on Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, and I, as a massive Harry Potter fan, just had to make my own! This Great Hall is lot bigger than the one in the set, and alot more book (and movie) accurate. It contains the foor tables, and that's already a great thing! The main challenge was that I wanted it to be warm and cosy, so that implied it couldn't be too big, or it wouldn't have looked as welcoming friendly. I decided to shorten the four tables down, first to keep the cosy feeling, but also for brickfilming purposes as I had a limited number of minifigures that had to fill the seats! Obviousy, the sky and flying Candles are photoshopped and are used in the Brickfilm. Most of the pictures are direct screenshots from the movie. In this view, we're looking down on the foor tables that have all a different feel to it. Of course, besides the different torsos (I used Tin7_creations' wonderful decals) we see a slightly different atmosphere on each table. At Gryffindor, the usual atmosphere hangs on the table, though at Slytherin, nobody looks at each other, and the food stayed untouched. At Ravenclaw, the students are bent over an interresting conversation while eating and drinking pumpkin juice and at Hufflepuff, the food is also untouched, though, this is purely because friendly conversations are more important than the delicious meals waiting for them. On this Picture, a Hufflepuff student is singing a song for the beginning of the term Feast, a scene specially made up for the Brickfilm. As this brickfilm is the fifth episode of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Harry and Snape are missing, and Slughorn has joined the Staff's table. The song sung by this young Hufflepuff is ♪Hogwarts Light♫ and is song by the Youtube user Jigscarag (which, on a side note, would highly recommand you to check out) For more information about this song, watch the video below. A close up of the Slytherin Table. Here again, the dumb expression on Crabbe's face (Yesn that's my custom fleshy Crabbe, I'll also use the new Goyle once I got the Battle for Hogwarts) Malfoy, looking both nasty and amused at Goyle stupidity. And Blaise Zabini (the dark skinned boy on the left) who's probably looking so happy, as Theodore Nott has just spilled Pumpkin Juice on his robes On the opposite side, we see Gryffindor House cheering and eating while Harry (who has now arrived), Ron and Hermione discussing Draco Malfoy's behaviour on the Hogwarts Express. On the left can my custom Neville be seen. I do have the official minifigure of the Prisoner of Azkaban set, though don't think his dumb and rabbit-like teeth expression works well for him any longer. Now, this is a picture of Dumbledore's speech, in the Brickfilm, Dumbledore turns down the lights of the candles to get the students attention. This was done purely for Brickfilming purposes to create a more dramatic effect. As Dumbledore is talking about danger and evil, the hole ambiance, including the lights get darker. Now, of course, the great hall won't always stay dark and here are just two pictures of the place in the morning! In the following picture, we also get a better look at the fireplace, which was designed to give an extra "living room" dimension to the room and of course add some small more accuracy to the looks of the movie. Notice the great hall isn't filled with students anymore as everybody has breakfast when they want. The food has changed, and the appetiting chickens have been changed into delicious croissants and bread. A last shot of Professor Mcgonnagal giving Harry his time tables and congratulating him with his excelent mark in Transfiguration. So this is it! I hope you enjoyed it and please tell me what you think by leaving a comment in the section below! This was Geertos13 with his new moc! Announcing his comeback!! To finish, here is the newest episode of the Half Blood Prince Series, where you can see this building come to life! flying Candles and magic ceilings, you'll all see it in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Part 6! sharky Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 (edited) I like it overall, and I think you did a good job. It's refreshing that you decided not to make the floor smooth. It gives it that Lego feel IMO. Edited July 22, 2011 by sharky Quote
-R8- Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 The lighting, architecture and details really do capture the antiquated and welcoming feeling of the castle. The Photoshop enhancements also do a great job of contrasting the different moods and time of day of the Great Hall. As if this wasn't good enough, the Brickfilm is yet another wonderful bonus to this already fantastic MOC! Nice voice acting. Who is the professor located on the far right of the table? Quote
Duke Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Nice MOC, but more importantly nice Alan Rickman impression. Quote
lightningtiger Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 AWESOME work 'Geertos13', at least you got everybody in the Great Hall ! I'll show my son later on, he'll be by it....goodness I hope he doesn't ask me to design one ! Brick On.....and keep on casting spells 'Geertos13' ! Quote
Geertos13 Posted July 23, 2011 Author Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) Thanks for all the lovely comments guys! I like it overall, and I think you did a good job. It's refreshing that you decided not to make the floor smooth. It gives it that Lego feel IMO. Yes I wanted to keep the Lego Feel But I must admitt that it also much more easier to animate on studs than on tiles, and as the floor is supposed to be stone and I didn't have enough dark grey tiles anyway. The lighting, architecture and details really do capture the antiquated and welcoming feeling of the castle. Haha, thanks -R8-, the Brickfilm was actually main reason that this was built, then again, I love building so I would have built it anyway. I'm glad you enjoy the overall look and the design, as I've put loads of work on that! The Professor on the far rigt... That is Professor Rolanda Hooch, the Quidditch referee/flying teacher! She comes in the new Quidditch set from 2010 Nice MOC, but more importantly nice Alan Rickman impression. Ha, glad you liked the moc! Yes the voice actor who plays Snape(it's not me) is a very nice brickfilmer on youtube, and he really nails Snape's voice! AWESOME work 'Geertos13', at least you got everybody in the Great Hall ! I'll show my son later on, he'll be by it....goodness I hope he doesn't ask me to design one ! Brick On.....and keep on casting spells 'Geertos13' ! Haha, glad you liked it! Yes I wanted all the different houses to be included, unlike the sets and most brickfilms I've seen. Well let's hope your son doesn't want a Great Hall then! Otherwise you'll have to spend a great deal of time in making one! But if you ever make one! Be sure to keep me updated about it Edited July 23, 2011 by Geertos13 Quote
Ultron Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 The Great Hall looks really good! And I like how you put Neville's Mimbulus Mimbletonia in there! Only someone who read the books would get it! Quote
Aredhel Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 This is a really nice MOC. You made it very accurate as known from the movies. I very much like the complete overview and the graphics on the sky is really impressive for the complete scene. Thank you for sharing! -Aredhel Quote
The Real Walkers Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 this is amazing!! Well done. However would it be possible for you to post a picture of it during the battle?? It's the silly boy inside of me who wants to see the castle damaged and battles going on. Again, great work!! Quote
shmails Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Wow, I have the movie on behind me right now, I can say for certainty that you nailed it! Wonderful work all around. Quote
Oky Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Nice work! It looks very accurate. But you're missing one crucial part: The house point hour glasses! Also, the fireplace should be on the right side of the hall. And what poll are you talking about? Anyway, keep up the good work! Quote
AnthonyFallen Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 It's really good! ^^ Not an exact replica, but it still looks awesome! :D Quote
Hoboman Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 I love this MOC. I like the whole candle efect in your shopped photo. Quote
Geertos13 Posted July 24, 2011 Author Posted July 24, 2011 Thanks again for all the lovely comments everyone! this is amazing!! Well done. However would it be possible for you to post a picture of it during the battle?? It's the silly boy inside of me who wants to see the castle damaged and battles going on. Again, great work!! Thank you The Real Walkers, I have not filmed that part in Half Blood Prince yet, so I can't put that up yet But I'll be sure to update it once done! Wow, I have the movie on behind me right now, I can say for certainty that you nailed it! Wonderful work all around. Thank you Nice work! It looks very accurate. But you're missing one crucial part: The house point hour glasses! Also, the fireplace should be on the right side of the hall. And what poll are you talking about? Anyway, keep up the good work! Thanks Oky! And about these Hourglasses, in the book, there are placed in the Entrance Hall, and so they are in my Brickfilm. That's why they're not in here! And I didn't know for the fireplace I really thought it was on the left, oh well, it doesn't matter that much, thanks for pointing out though. Quote
the last chronicler Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Wow, I love it! What's always impressed me the most about what I've seen of your videos is the sets, and this one is no exception! I love how the scaffolding matches the films, but I also enjoyed how you incorporated elements of the most recent set as well. The fireplace is easily recognizable, and is a spot-on match to the film! Not to mention the special effects are extremely impressive! How did you add the moving candles and the sky? May I add that as a stop motion animator myself, I'm kind of wondering about the secret of this set. I assume there is no fourth wall behind the camera? Quote

May I add that as a stop motion animator myself, I'm kind of wondering about the secret of this set. I assume there is no fourth wall behind the camera? Thank you for the lovely comment All the effects, were added in Adobe After Effects. The sky is suprisingly simpel to do! I got some pictures from clouds from internet cut them out and then put them in the composition (If you're familiar with After effects or Photoshop, I'd add that I feathered up the clouds alot and put a night sky layer behind it.) And for the Candles, as I had no clue on how to actually do that I probably did a bunch of things that weren't necessary. I took a picture of a brick built candle, put it on a complete green picture. Went to After Effects, put in the picture, chromakeyed it, and then made it move up and down by using position keyframes. THen add a little fire ( It didn't make it, I got the clip from internet) and made it match the candle. hope that helped! As for the secret of this set, yes, it only has three walls. But, some sets need 4 walls, everytime you need a different shot, you just break a wall down (While building you must not try to build the walls together, all build them seperatly so that you can take them apart whenever needed) Quote
22kane Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I've never actually seen a Harry Potter movie, yes I am far from the train forum right now. I was very impressed with your MOC as well as your short film. Very well done. Maybe I'll rent the films and check it out. Again, great job!! Quote
