Hrafn Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Very nice! It's quite round now. The stripes should make it mesmerizing when it's rotating. Quote
Milan Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 So, you made barel in MLcad first (rotation model), add stripes, and then just cut out the quarter? Perfect looking! Quote
Lasse D Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 (edited) Thanks. So that is what the rotation model is for!? I made a small Java program to construct the model, but if I knew there was an easier way, I would have used it! :-D Edit I have built the real model now. This is what it looks like on top of the truck: Edited December 30, 2013 by Lasse D Quote
Milan Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Perfect for this scale. Imagine if this was built in 1:13 scale! Quote
Rishab N Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Wow that looks really nice! Will you make instructions? Quote
Lasse D Posted August 19, 2014 Author Posted August 19, 2014 It is now time to start a project which I have promised to do since 2010. Today I will start by designing the front. As always I have Griddy to help me with the proportions: Next update will be once I have the first prototype for the front. See you soon! Quote
EvilEnderman Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Is this for the model team comp? I'd love to see the master of the theme enter it! Quote
Lasse D Posted August 19, 2014 Author Posted August 19, 2014 That is a good question. I have planned on using Power Functions for this model, but I could make a non-PF version to fit the competition rules. I will also have to shorten it considerably, but that is also no problem. To enter the competition with a normal 12 stud wide truck would probably not catch the attention of the voters, but then it will be awesome for the winners to say that they beat a veteran at his own game! I'm in! Quote
Milan Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 To enter the competition with a normal 12 stud wide truck would probably not catch the attention of the voters I can't see why. Quote
Lasse D Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 I for one sure hope it will be like that! The competition is completely free within the realm of Model Team which means that you can build any kind of vehicle. Given how creative people are at Eurobricks you can expect someone to come up with some truly creative models which allow the builder to go into depth with details, and thus really build what Model Team is all about. I will make a model which might be really, really close to the original visually, but it will be functionally equivalent to Technic models which seen in recent years, and based largely on the frame from my previous truck (The MAN TGS). I might come up with clever ideas for details, but the overall level of creativity will be rather low and the model will be bordering "have we not seen this 100 times before"? For purists like me it will be great to see a new Volvo FM in scale 1:25, but for the competition I expect more. I will personally vote for models which show a greater level of detail and creativity. Good old Lego builder Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 (edited) You are selling yorself short Lasse! Your models look great which for me will be an important criterium! And hè, we can't have à model team contest without Mister Model Team himself! :-) Edited August 20, 2014 by Good old Lego builder Quote
Lasse D Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 (edited) Well. Let's see how it goes. I have copied the frame of the MAN thanks to the building instructions so that I could get onto the front. The lower part is proving to be quite the challenge. Here is my first attempt at it: - I think I should change the headlights - both sides look wrong because of the white section. - The headlight section looks too blocky. I will try to use slopes on the sides, but this will also require a different headlight design. - This design doesn't allow for PF lights, which is a shame. - I should use black instead of DBG... or perhaps it will look better once I have built more. We will see. - The grilles, while being very true to the original, look to simplistic. Perhaps I should make them only 1 wide? Input is encouraged. I have barely begun :) Edited August 23, 2014 by Lasse D Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I am afraid you can not enter a moc into the contest that has any electric or pneumatic parts in it. Quote
D3K Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I am afraid you can not enter a moc into the contest that has any electric or pneumatic parts in it. Where does it say pneumatics are not allowed? On topic; looking forward to seeing the model make progress! Love your earlier work! Quote
Lasse D Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 (edited) I am afraid you can not enter a moc into the contest that has any electric or pneumatic parts in it. Alasdair! I'm building the awesome version first. The competition version can wait. I will make a separate topic for that one. Edited August 23, 2014 by Lasse D Quote
legolijntje Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 [...] - The grilles, while being very true to the original, look to simplistic. Perhaps I should make them only 1 wide? [...] I love the grilles and they don't look simplistic at all! Quote
Lasse D Posted August 23, 2014 Author Posted August 23, 2014 (edited) That was my first thought as well. Still. I will try to work out some alternative designs. So. The lower design is relative true to the boxing going on in the real model, while the upper version is way too simplistic. Using slopes on the sides of the lights (I have to purchase more blue slopes!) helps with the boxiness. It will now be easier to continue the relaxed surface up along the side of the front of the truck. I will keep trying alternatives. Edit Aug. 8 2014 I have rehosted the latest pictures on my private web page since Brickshelf seems to have problems. Now. I have tried a new type of grille. This one allows me to have all pieces in the front connected (some of the tiles were floating in the earlier versions). This one is my favorite yet. The top grille, however, is too wide while the "/"-logo is too slim (See the griddy picture for what the widths should be). I will try to change the dimensions. Update: August 26, 2014 Updates: - The logo is now 5 wide making the front more true to the original. - First attempt at motorizing: With two L-motors space is left between them allowing a lifting mechanism in the middle of the truck. - The Servo motor has been mounted but with additional spacing between the front axles compared to the MAN. Update: August 29, 2014 Updates: - Starting from scratch with the rear. The dual motor setup used too much space. - I have focused on finishing the cab. Currently the area underneath the windscreen seems a bit too slim. - Roof and especially mirrors will be a challenge. Update: August 31, 2014 Updates: - First version of full cab with interior. - New version of engine mount. Now only 2WD, but with lifting rear axle. - I prefer this grille design with the big square in the middle of the "/". Update: September 5, 2014 First attempts at making the lifting mechanism for the back. The rear axle is lowered when the arm goes down... perhaps I should make it work so that the axle is lifted instead? Update: September 6, 2014 The lifting mechanism now (almost) works and I have made the rear axle lift when the small wheels in the back are pushed down. Update: September 9, 2014 The lifting mechanism has been updated with larger wheels which create a better balance when the lifting mechanism interacts with the rear axle. I have also given an update to the sides and rear fitting so that the model reflects an actual truck which I see on a daily basis. The container is a very light construction. I am working on a more detailed container. Edited September 9, 2014 by Lasse D Quote
Good old Lego builder Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 It looks very nice Lasse! Quote
Lasse D Posted October 18, 2014 Author Posted October 18, 2014 Thanks you very much. In the meantime I have built a container for it and am currently working on video+instructions And I'm also building a tractor version: I just have to buy some green and gray bricks. Quote
Good old Lego builder Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 Very well done. Looking forward to the finished tractor version too! Quote
Lasse D Posted July 21, 2015 Author Posted July 21, 2015 (edited) After half a year of rigorous testing... or rather... being busy at work. I have updated the blue Volvo. It is now time to start making some building instructions! I will update this post with my progress after each hour of virtual building. Update after 1 hour of virtual building In one hour I can... begin slowly with the container. Update after 2 hours of virtual building Another hour and the container is done! Time to start on the frame. Update after 3 hours of virtual building The frame is roughly 25% done. Update after 4 hours of virtual building The frame is now approximately 40% done. Update after 5 hours of virtual building Frame completion: 60%. Update after 6 hours of virtual building Frame completion: 85%. Update after 7 hours of virtual building Frame Done. Time for some fittings. Update after 8 hours of virtual building Fitting added. Now it's time for the cab. Update after 9 hours of virtual building Construction of the cab has started out nicely. The front with the grille is up next. It consists of 14 individual sub-assemblies, so I doubt it can be finished in just one hour. Update after 10 hours of virtual building The grille was finished in only one hour! That must be a new record. Now for the lower grille. Update after 11 hours of virtual building The lower grille is done. Now it's time for the ceiling. Update after 12 hours of virtual building The only parts missing now are the doors and windscreen. Update after 13 hours of virtual building The LDraw model is complete. Now I just have to make the building instructions, assisting images, etc. etc. This will take some days. A new thread will be created once done. Edited July 24, 2015 by Lasse D Quote
