Deeks Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Just read this on GeekDad full article here Basically Lego has made 3 special aluminum mini-figs that are on the soon-to-launch Juno spacecraft that is heading for Jupiter. I hope they release them for sale too! Quote
Brickdoctor Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Deeplinked pic: (Jupiter, Juno, and Galileo, according to the article) Great to see minifigs expanding their reach! And those are some sweet minifigs, even if they aren't articulated. Quote
MacK Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 That's very interesting, a Lego minifig will be the first man on Jupiter. I wonder if Lego might make some plastic versions of these and sell them. Quote
Edmond Dantes Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 It's awesome this was NASA's idea! That's very cool. Quote
sputnik16 Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 wow. this is awesome! Does galileo have a new beard piece? Quote
Peppermint_M Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 wow. this is awesome! Does galileo have a new beard piece? Nope, that is a very nice rendition of the CMF3 Fisherman beard. Quote
Big Cam Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Nope, that is a very nice rendition of the CMF3 Fisherman beard. Ahh, you beat me too it. In other news, this is really interesting. You think TLG would make a handful more of these and sell them for ridiculous prices. I'd certainly pony up for them. Quote

This could be a very interesting sales pitch, 3 figs cast in aluminium , the plastic counterparts in a box with a NASA-LEGO patch, or something like that, nice promo ! Quote

Well according to the article TLG spent $5,000 a pop on those three, though I assume that would include the manufacturing costs + the expense of installation. Quote
TanTile Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Wow talk about LEGO trying to expand their reach around the worl... i mean the galaxy! what next a factory on the moon to save on shipping cost Quote
Skipper Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 These were made from aluminum not ABS which I assume contributed to the cost. Now I want a fisherman mf beard so I can make Papa Smurf . Quote

Well if these are machined from solid aluminum, that's like machining a small mold, and I think Brickarms spends up to $20,000 on molds, so it's not that far-fetched. captain jari Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 woot more lego in space. I'm wondering is the lightning that Jupiter is holding a part? I can't seem to find it on bricklink. Quote
Rumble Strike Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 That's fantastic, the whole idea and execution is spot on. I agree that Lego should make a 3-pack of these to use as a special / promo item. Would be nice to own a part of history Quote
MacK Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 woot more lego in space. I'm wondering is the lightning that Jupiter is holding a part? I can't seem to find it on bricklink. At the moment I don't think it's an official part, but that being said I wouldn't be surprised to see it soon in a set or collectible minifig. Quote
Si-MOCs Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 I hope they put out a special collectors 3 set of these (in plastic). Really neat. hehe first 'man' on jupiter Quote
Pingles Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 I hope aliens intercept them and then when they try to infiltrate our society they mistakenly disguise themselves as minifigs. Quote
Hoboman Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 I think these are great. I love the whole idea that something as simple and playful is included in a mission like this. That is so very human in my opinion. Quote
Deeks Posted August 5, 2011 Author Posted August 5, 2011 (edited) Well they are blasting off in about 20 minutes Livefeed Edited August 5, 2011 by Deeks Quote
Shtick Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 This morning, NASA launched the Juno mission to Jupiter. On board the spacecraft are three LEGO minifigs. So cool! Juno Minifigs Quote
Rufus Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 We already have a thread about that here. Yeah, and it is no longer Science Fiction I'll merge this with the other thread. Quote
Shtick Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Yeah, and it is no longer Science Fiction I'll merge this with the other thread. Thanks kindly. Anyone know if Lego plans to release these figures to the public? Quote
KotZ Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 I read this yesterday on FOX, and I love the idea. I can see these three as CMFs someday. From Mars, to Jupiter, what's next? The Sun? Neptune? The possibilities are endless. And if there are aliens, what if they mistake minifigures as the dominant species on Earth? Thanks for posting this! Quote

I think it may be just a wee bit hot for a spacecraft, much less minifigures. Quote
