Posted August 5, 201113 yr Hi everyone, Yesterday I just finished to work on the hull of my next ship, and placed the masts. I should be starting the rigging today, and my first idea is to create a ketch, hence the main mast being placed very far from the bow. The only thing that is not on the hull right now is the technic bar for my rigging to be attached, but that should also be added soon. I'm not entirely sure about the ship's setting regarding the sails, as her size could allow for a schooner or a brig. But I figured that a ketch would be nice as apart from a bomb ketch I didn't see a lot of them lately. Anyway, comments and criticism are very welcome!
August 5, 201113 yr Nice so far, the grey color scheme and green lanterns makes it somewhat spooky Keep it up.
August 5, 201113 yr Author Thanks Sebeus! The rigging is coming along pretty nicely. I still have some jibs to add, to complete the rope ladders on the side, and to link the sails so the masts.
September 11, 201113 yr I like that you've made a smaller ship out of the smaller hull size. We don't see too many ships around here made with the black and grey hull. Could you show us some more pictures of the center section, between the bow and stern pieces so we can see how you lengthened it?
September 11, 201113 yr A very nice ship! Now i saw your ship I can't wait untill my brown hullparts are shipped, it takes so long.... I really like the extension of the middle section by using bricks, if 'Cousarmy0001' didn't mention it I probably wwould not see it! again, good job Bjornu
September 11, 201113 yr Author Thanks for the feedback! As for the midsections, I'm afraid I had to replace them with regular square section bricks... In an ideal world I would probably have placed inverted slopes but I don't have enough dark grey ones. If I order bricks online in a near future I'll fix that annoying detail :) Anyway I'm glad that it's not as obvious as I had feared at first!
September 11, 201113 yr I very much like you project. We don’t seem to get a lot of ketches and such rigs around here, mostly frigates and brigs, and the change of pace is enjoyable. There are a few thing I would have suggested changing before moving on to rigging, but somehow your previous post slipped right by me. The guns being unevenly place along the ship length throws me just a bit. It’s not unheard from a historic sand point, especially amongst smaller vessels. The size and number of guns with only the one before the mast while the others are equidistant after the mast makes the first one look out of place. If it had a companion perhaps it would flow better. I also find the Lego guns far too large for all but the biggest vessels. You might find you get a better effect with scaling and placement if you were to go with smaller, brick built cannons. This also may clear you enough deck space to place a mortar or two and make her the bomb ketch you first suggested. I also can’t say I like that bow sprit at all. It works, but doesn’t convince, with such a stumpy lower portion and the outer portion sprouting directly from the center. If you could muster bricks enough to make the larger portion longer and then attach the skinner to the top, it would look a great deal more authentic. Now that I’m watching the thread, I’m anxious to see how she works out. Thanks for doing something just a bit different, and thanks for sharing. Quick google gab for example
September 12, 201113 yr I really like the look you have achieved with the hull used. I hope you will forgive me for shamelessly stealing some of your technique!
September 12, 201113 yr Author @Kurigan : Thanks for all these pieces of advice! I should definitely replace the Lego cannons with brickbuilt lighter pieces, as for now, even if I had enouch to fill all the hatches, they would'nt fit due to the hull being too narrow... I had initially placed the hatches evenly along the hull, but then I ran out of space for the side ladder, so I had to move every hatch backwards a few studs except for the foremost. But you're probably right about the ship being long enough to put one more hatch at the bow. Concerning the bow sprit, at first it was only made ouf the long technic bars, but I felt like making it a bit longer. Now that you point it out I should find a way to make it more realistic. @Warhorse47 : You can use whatever you please of course, that ship is open source :)
