Mr. Elijah Timms Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 That fire plane seems like MASSIVE overkill to put out a fire in ONE freakin' tree!! "Oh no, that little tree is on fire there! We'd better put it out, Chief!" "Stand down, rookie... Let me call into the feds to sanction a waterbomber dispatch." "But sir... it's barely on fire!! There's a yellow extinguisher right there in your jeep-- we could put it out right now!" "Listen, kid, you're new around here, so I'm gonna make it real clear-- Here in Lego City, we do things BIG or we don't do them at all!! We--" "But this isn't the City. This is a rural setting that's supposed to be a fores--" "YOU KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT AND LISTEN! Here in the Fire Department we are dedicated to overreacting to any threats that come our way! We also have some real sweet connections in the state legislature, so the budget is maddeningly generous for the fire department. Now are you gonna let that money go to waste? Or are you gonna let those clowns down at the Police Department get the best of us when it comes to overspending and overreacting??? ARE YOU?" "NO SIR! I'll go sit down and drink from my red mug in Engine No. 5 while we wait for the water drop." Quote

AndyC Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 I hope the recycling truck images are preliminary, it would be great if instead of the non-recyclable junk they're collecting they had the new bottle piece in a different colour, like transparent brown or green... That would be cool, although where I am in the UK we do actually have food waste recycling collection, which would explain the fishes and banana I suppose. I'm not even going to comment on what the brown 1x1 round plate might be representing. Quote
Jordan S. Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 (edited) I think I would feel sorry for any child just starting to get into Lego City these days. It would be really hard to build a town out of nothing but vehicles. Granted, they are very nicely-designed vehicles, but they don't create a setting or a sense of PLACE. That's something that's missing across a lot of TLC's product lines. Oddly enough, the new Friends line looks terrific in that regard. Lots of varied and specific locations with excellent details to create that sense of place. I think you've picked up on something interesting here. Perhaps TLG's play-testing has indicated to them that their targeted "boys 5-8" audience for City sets just wants vehicles (and evidently, huge, out-of-scale aircraft). Girls are seeking a more balanced play experience with more emphasis on acting out stories and scenes. Of course, that's all just speculation... Edited September 15, 2011 by Jordan S. Quote
Aanchir Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 I just noticed something. The hood of the ambulance is made of three pieces: two 1x3 slopes and a 4x3 slope. Now, why would this be done when the much cheaper 6x3 windscreen/slope piece used so frequently in Space Police III is an option? It has existed in white before I believe, and if not could easily be made in that color. One possibility that might seem like wishful thinking to many (keep in mind that my opinions on this don't tend to agree with the crowd, however) but is really just my best guess is that the "AMBULANCE" on the hood might be printed rather than stickered. If so, I'm sure a lot of people would be happy. Although hopefully, whether it's printed or stickered in the final version, the word "AMBULANCE" will be reversed, as it is on a lot of real-life ambulances so you can tell what they are in your rear-view mirror. I also notice that where the police car in the HQ set has "LEGO" on the grille, the ambulance's grille seems to have "CITY" on it. I wonder whether either is more finalized than the other, and if so whether one design will be used for both sets. Even if it's a sticker, I'd appreciate if these were consistent. Quote

Lots of varied and specific locations with excellent details to create that sense of place. I absolutely love that we are getting vehicles outside of an annual 'theme,' but I know what you are saying. When my son was old enough for LEGO and my dark ages ended a few years ago, I started picking up sets and bought some road plates to do it old school like we did in the 80's. Our LEGO City roads quickly reached gridlock (especially with 18 wheelers that stretch the length of a whole baseplate and then some), and with the exception of a pizza place and bike shop, if I hadn't built some buildings the town wouldn't have have had a structure in it. My basic houses and structures have been replaced with a fire station, police station, bank, town house, etc. However, we still have more vehicles than we have streets to drive them on. It's tough to build a town when almost all of the buildings are $80-100 sets. Thank goodness for Target and the $50 sets they've had the last two years, but I'd love to see some small buildings sold separately just like these new vehicles. If the price point is right, Friends might be just the ticket. Quote
Suspsy Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Wow, the country police force is so tough, they've got a trained bear working for them! Look at how it's cornered that gold-stealing bandit in a tree, right outside the police station! Quote
paul_delahaye Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 wow, Lego city doing Police sets 2 years in a row, the idea bank must be very empty for 2012 :-( Quote
Suspsy Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 wow, Lego city doing Police sets 2 years in a row, the idea bank must be very empty for 2012 :-( What did you expect? City revolves around three main themes: Police, Firefighters, and Construction. Personally, I'd love it if we got sets like a restaurant, a grocery store, and a school, but TLG is going with what sells best. And hey, at least they're finally putting a new twist on the themes instead of just giving us yet another Police Mobile Headquarters. Quote
Asimo Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 man, the police twin rotor helicopter appears awesome So is the car with the caravan....cant wait! Quote
lightningtiger Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 wow, Lego city doing Police sets 2 years in a row, the idea bank must be very empty for 2012 :-( Why, empty.....it's a different police station altogether, all the vehicles have some freshness to them, plus if your read a few pages back....someone had also seen second half as well....though we'll need to wait till about March next year to have heavy mining machinery proven. (images are great proof eh ? ) Quote
Piranha Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 (edited) The forest police - interesting station house, I do like the police car, police Ranger Rover and that helicopter.....screw that silly 6 wheel that comes with it though. Was reading the thread and agreed simply hilarious! I like this different take on police and fire, can we have a deer now? Also I too would prefer some locations (City Corner 2 anyone?) but these vehicles are pretty good plus there is always the Creator houses or Modular buildings. lightningtiger Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Well, look at it this way......two things are missing from this forest sub-theme......a general store and a fire house to park that forest fire truck in (with a lookout tower and huge siren on it). Ah, well that's what MOCing is for......also contests ! Quote

Lord Insanity Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Hmm... Those police shirts in the new station appear to be dark tan. As they have the new badge logo I bet those are either final designs or really close to it. Combined with the tan "ranger" hat and dark blue pants, they look really nice. It also would make it very easy to switch the pants to dark green and make forest rangers out of them. The crooks vehicles all look really cool. The police vehicles with their primarily blue color scheme, not so much. I would probably convert the K-9 truck and Chinook into cargo company vehicles. So despite blue not working at all for "police" in my mind, I prefer the vehicles in these sets in blue for the non-police MOD-ability. This would be one of the few times I am hoping the "printed parts" are stickers. Aside from the yellow car... (dark blue, dark green, dark tan, dark red, any color resembling the majority of cars actually on the road would be nice) The camper itself is awesome though. I love the SUV towing the motor bikes. The garbage truck color scheme is perfect and the front looks awesome. I hope the back "looks right" too. That ambulance is great. The road repair truck is good but that wheelbarrow is awesome. Quote
lightningtiger Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Does my memory serve me correct, that a few have written about the four wheel drives looking like the one out of 7635, these new 4x4's are one stud shorter in the bonnet and it's plate built. The rear end is flattened and there is a brick built door pillar.....also different mirrors. Though I wonder why the ambulance doesn't have any mirror's ? Quote
That_Guy Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 I'm really loving the new ambulance and dirt bike transport , as for the police they all look amazing except for the white torsos which are kind of throwing me off a bit, but then again its all just preliminary. The firefighters look great too but again that inconsistency with the new orange jumpsuit is a bit annoying but I'm sure its just prelim. So all in all its going to be a great year for Lego city. I doubt it. I bet it will be just construction again. Though mining would be cool. It is mining, a few posts back I posted the set names but here they are again. 4200 Test Drilling 4201 Mini Excavator 4202 Dump Truck 4203 Excavator Transport 4204 The Mine If you ask me I'm really liking the whole "same concept different setting" idea, it adds spice. I know that this is really early to start speculation on the second wave, and I don't really doubt that it could be mining themed items, but I really hope they do it like they did this year. The primary release might be mining (like it was harbor this year) and then we could get a hospital sub-release (like the launch command that accompanied the harbor sets). If they do that, it does mean that there will be a TON of city sets released, which could cast doubt on the chances of this happening, but I wouldn't complain. I love City. Its always one of Lego's best selling themes and I think this could be the new format to keep things fresher (but unfortunately allow them to do fire/police more frequently) Quote
fyrmedhatt Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 The five vehicles that are going to be sold separately all look fantastic, and I'm so excited to collect them all. The car and caravan set will go great with the RV from 2009, and the dirt bike set with the horse transport, while the ambulance will be my first ambulance ever. I have to say with the first released rumors and photos I was horribly disappointed with the city sets, but those five vehicles are great, and I might even get some of the police and fire sets. I'd really like a bear. As a geologist, I have to say these sets are really cool, test drilling is a must-buy, the mine could be good, let's see what the will all be like. I'm hoping to get a geologist/mining engineer minifig, it would have to be a must buy. Also, I have kind of written off my most hoped for theme due to being politically incorrect: an oil rig theme. Mining is equally politically incorrect, so now I actually dare to hope, an oil theme would be fantastic, with supply boats, platforms, helicopters and tankers it's exactly what young (and older ;)) boys like. Does it look a little, well.....someone falling of a bike, male and female ambo's in red......again white with red stripe of the ambulance itself......originality - where is it ? I hope it has an extra back up valve I used to have water bombers flying over my house all the time when we had a forest fire up in the hills so it is kinda nice to see lego making a forest fire line. The little fire truck is kinda cute in its size but i wouldn't have minded a bigger one. Off-road police is a nice change too. Maybe they might be able to catch the dirtbikers riding down mainstreet. I think it's a great idea, and it makes for some very refreshing changes. I'd love to see some winter-setting subthemes some time. Imagine, police snowmobile chases. The mining theme sounds like it could be awesome, assuming it's true. I just hope the don't give it a ridiculous colour scheme. Quote
