I think those Dinosaurs are genius; while some will despite them for obvious reasons I enjoy that they look like actual Dinos. That fact alone really helps sell the theme for me.

As a whole, however, the vehicles and locations don't impress me too much; I wouldn't say they're bad, just bland. :sceptic:

I like the T-Rex, but I don't like the rest of the set [i'm not big on vehicles and whatnot, especially the "actiony" stuff]. Although I'm certainly getting the two smaller sets with the Raptory dinos in them. Those guys look hot, and that'd give me enough of the other bits to have a proper feel for the line, including those cute tranq guns.

Posted

Excellent. The dinos have plenty of poseability, but still have the smooth, crisp edges that gave Adventurers Dino Island and the 2001 Dinosaurs theme such an authentic LEGO feel. The vehicles all feel fun and cohesive, much like Dino Attack/Dino 2010 or other more recent action themes. Don't know if I'll invest in this, but it certainly meets my expectations of a good dinosaur theme.

wish I could make out what the big dyno research centre looked like. must be displayed on another page of this catalogue I guess? I always find themes easiest to judge by the flagship sets.

Posted

Looks like there will be a new shotgun type gun....

It's a rifle with a clip on top, that appears in most cases to hold a syringe. Hence me calling it a tranq gun.

Unless there's another one in there too.

Posted

Cool, I guess. I like the new tranquilizer gun, and the dinos look cool. This theme seems like a mix of every single action theme from the past 5 years.

Finally! I must say, this is one theme that exceeds my expectations! The dinosaurs are magnificent, especially the triceratops and pteranodon.

They are poseable like action figures while retaining that classic Lego look. Everything I could have hoped for.

The vehicles are okay, the only one which really stands out to me is the triceratops capture truck. Is it just me or is that t. rex bigger than the helicopter that's supposed to carry it away?

Speaking of which, red works for that rex. I didn't think it would, but it did. Man, this brings back memories of looking at Jurassic Park figures in toy catalogs back in the nineties. :cry_happy:

Dinos are all right. I would have really prefered buildable ones, but well. What to do... The color schemes of the vehicles is great. I may actually get the smaller sets if no sci-fi is coming.

Yep, dino's and crazy vehicles......Lego's on a winner with the six to ten year olds !

The creatures look excellent, great detailing to them and the crazy vehicles....the truck and jeep are the best - not sure about the copter - need to scan over the image some more !

This all looks great. I think the dart guns will come in black, not white. It would be nice to see the syringe moulded in a transparent colour with a flash of coloured plastic inside to suggest liquid, like we've gotten in a few action figure cabled pieces and the Collectible Minfigures Mad Scientist's flask from series 4. But I'd imagine that might be a bit fiddly to produce, given the size of the syringe piece. Would look great, though.

As for the sets, they all look nice, I prefer the lower end of the price point as the bigger the vehicles get, they look less appealing to me but better pictures might change that. A lot of these sets remind me of the first wave of Agents - the smallest one with a Pterodactyl reminds me of the swamp set, and the helicopter especially reminds me of the one in the Turbocar chase and the large off roader reminds me of the similar vehicle in the second wave of Agents sets. But they were nice designs, so it's good to see them again.

One thing I've noticed with all of the themes for 2012 is that a lot of them lack a small £3.99/ $5 set. Which is a shame. Unless the smallest set in this theme does indeed meet that price point, but I doubt it somehow - there's a lot of plastic in it.

After examining the pictures for some time, I have to say that this theme gets a big thumbs up from me.

A huge part of my approval, though, stems entirely from that helicopter design. Seriously, that cargo chopper is just genius. I also quite like the large Triceratops transport thingymabob - though it is a little odd, I think the design is extremely solid.

The other sets are all pretty decent as well. I'm not sold on the plane, though - I was expecting more, and somehow it reminds me of Jack Stone.

I want a picture of that HQ!

I'm on the fence here. On the one hand, the dinosaurs look better than any in Dino Attack/2010 (which I specifically avoided for that exact reason) or Dino Island, and I like the look of the syringe/tranquilizers and minifigs, but the vehicles are too over-the-top and wacky.

Of course, I'm sure I'll do a complete 180 degree turn and change my opinion if I have those pics on my desktop for five minutes.

I'm loving the new dinosaurs

I have been looking for a good raptor design and I have not found a great one on an accurate scale. No disrespect to the builders, I don't think it is possible on that scale.

These raptors fairly accurate if a bit strangely coloured and the Pteranadon looks like it on the same scale as the skeleton I built recently.

The tranq guns also look great, I have been wanting a tranquilliser gun for quite a while now and these will be perfect for Primeval MOCs as will the dinosaurs.

I hope the HQ will be as good as the other sets in the wave.

With this line, the great pieces in the new ninjago line and the forrest ranger sets next year is going to be an expensive one.

It's good that they're not so large, though.I like everyone. But why Triceratops is so small? And Pteranodon looks very close to the one from Adventures,in the way of proportions and flexibility. But its have wings as single pieces, which could be used in some mocs. But i think it would be better to have some water dinosaur, like Mosasaurus.

And helicopter seems to be hard to find or i hope it will be improved.

Has anyone seen a better picture of the largest set 5887 yet?

The only one I can find is the one where all the sets are lined up

below the single presentations... It sure looks nice...

So here are my temporary toughts on these prelimary images

The sets are all in a good color scheme. It seems that it was actually influenced by the one from Dino attack, since that one was Sand yellow-with Dark red accents. The new one is Yellow and Dark red. The logo seems to be a black silhouette of the T-rex (strinkingly similar to the jurassic park logo). The dino's are more detailed than their predesecors from Dino-attack. But they look more like lego. They do not have the over-organic shape, but more like they were carved out of wood or something, making them look less-organic but still fitting with the rest of the Lego world. The theme is very vehicle orientated, with only 2 sets with medium/large structures.

5882: A nice little set to pick up. We have seen a concept of this kind of vehicle many times before, but this one looks more compact. Some foilage and a dino that can ambush this set makes it a nice addition to the theme, but for me not a must-have

5883: A small lookout tower near a swamp in the forest. The fish to catch pteranodon's is really an ingenious concept. It also comes with a jet-ski and a very detailed-but still lego looking pteranodon. Also a good set, and the cheapest set with a flying dino so far.

5884: Also a nice medium set. A 4X4 vehicle (somewhat similar to the one from Dino-attack, only smaller) to catch the attacking raptor. Once again they use food to catch the dino. Also included is a reinforced radar station of some kind. But wait..is that a city skyline in the background I see? Maybe it's just the picture but I do see some sky-scraper like contours in the background. Meditate about this I will

5888: a plane that's able to land in water, we've seen it before. It seems that it's around the same price as the previous set. And it would look good together with the small lookout tower from 5883. Also in this set is somekind of net-catapult function and a jet ski. This is the second set with a Pteranodon.

5886: a giant vehicle with a horned dino, probaly a triceratops. It's nice to see a come-back of a dino we haven't seen since 2001. The modl is ofcourse different and much more detailed, but like most dino's they look a lot like a combination of the two previous dino themes: The weird ones from Dino 2010/Attack and the more Lego-but less detailed versions from Dino Island. The vehicle is something that reminds me of the Claw catcher from the Power miners line.

5885: My favorite so far. A giant Sky-Crane helicopter and a giant T-rex. The T-rex seems to have the same anatomy as the one from Dino-2010/attack, except the tail is probaly semi-posable. The helicopter it comes with is also a nice variaty from what we've seen elsewhere. But will it actually be able to lift the mighty T-rex?

5887: The research station. Not a very clear pic so I will try to give my opinion about it. It looks we get two dino's. A yellow-ish T-rex and a red raptor. The rest of the set consist of a Sentai-base (from the Exo-foroce theme) like structure to imprisson the T-rex. This also reminds me of Lavatraz (power miners). Also a big control tower is included, a heli landing pad,a jeep, and a smaller helicopter

The question I asked myself was: Is this theme good enough for a second wave? Since I'm very happy with this theme it will probaly influence my judgement. The new molds are very good, and I hope they will reuse them in another wave. Only the fact that they don't pay to much attention to marketing (as said on the retailers catalque page) makes me wonder if it's just a one wave theme, or multi wave theme.

Well, so far the sets. At least I know now that I will probaly end up buying every single set of this theme  , since the 2012 sets of City are a little of a letdown for me

So I took another look at the pics, and I decided to post more detailed impressions of the sets:

5882 (small buggy): I'm sure this will sell well, since it's an easy way to get foliage and a pretty neat Dino minifig, but I'm not seeing much creativity here. It's the same buggy we've gotten in every LEGO Racers wave since 2002... or earlier. Still, since it will be cheap, I might have to get it.

5883 (Pterodactyl and tower): One huge standout for this set: I'm pretty sure I see Jake Raines! Unless this is just a placeholder head, that could mean that this ties in to Pharaoh's Quest after all. A little surprising, since it's simply called "Dino" and not "Dino Quest", but it's nice to see LEGO hasn't given up on the Pharaoh's Quest gang. As for the set itself, I'm not impressed. While I like the Pterodactyl, the tower almost looks exactly like the Agents swamp set - and I wasn't fond of that one, either. I just prefer vehicles.

5884 (Jeep and Velociraptor): Now THIS I like! The Velociraptor is probably the best-looking dino from this theme, at least from that angle. The jeep itself reminds me strongly of the Dino Attack jeep, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It looks like a nice, solid build. Appears to include 2 minifigs, which I'm liking more and more. I imagine this set will be in the $30 price range, so this is almost a definite buy for me.

5886 (Triceratops and big truck): Definitely one of the stranger looking models, I happen to actually like this set. The Triceratops looks fine, but I honestly prefer the older Johnny Thunder version. The truck looks massive, and extremely sturdy. It's nice to see that LEGO tried to make it LOOK like it was capable of containing a live dinosaur. One thing that does bother me, though, is the lack of figs - only two. It also looks to be a little on the pricier side, so I'm not sure I'll be getting this. We'll see what happens when official pics come out.

5888 (Airplane and Pterodactyl): I'm on the fence here. At first glance, this set looks like something out of Jack Stone (shudder). But upon closer examination, it is quite sleek looking and I imagine the playability value is pretty high. Definitely seems to be inspired by the superior Johnny Thunder rendition of this vehicle. All in all, I'll probably wind up skipping this, unless reviews change my mind.

5885 (Helicopter and T-Rex): Now THIS set I quite like. The construction of the Helicopter is fantastic. I've always been fond of those large aerial transport vehicles, and this looks like one of the best LEGO's ever done. It looks like it's quite large - possibly comparable (at least in length) to the awesome helicopter from Dino Attack. Of course, this one seems much less violent. The cockpit area appears to hinge open, which is good (at first glance I thought it didn't). The only complaint I have is - as some have pointed out - it doesn't exactly look capable of carrying a trashing T-rex through the air. But that's a minor complaint - I will most certainly be getting this, provided the price is reasonable. I just hope it includes more than 2 figs.

Although I like the idea of the tranquilizer guns, they're not selling points for me. Neither are the dinos, which seem to be pretty hit or miss. I would have preferred buildable dinos, like the ones from that old dinosaur theme in 2001 (?). It's definitely the solid vehicle construction that's catching my eye here.

The minifigs are definitely comparable to Dino Attack's figs, and that is nothing but awesome. These figs, from what I can tell, seem a little bland compared to the figs from Dino Attack, but perhaps they're still prelims. I'll wait until I see better shots of them before I pass judgement.

One point that is bothering me would be the color scheme. Why yellow? Are they trying to scare the dinos away with bright colors? If I was stalking dinosaurs in a mysterious jungle environment, I'd try to avoid looking like a huge piece of candy. I would have much preferred a color scheme like the one from Dino Island, which was much easier on the eyes. I don't HATE this color scheme, per say, but it's definitely lending these sets a Power Miners vibe.

Oh, well - I suppose I'll get used to it. I really want a better picture of that research compound - that tantalizing glimpse on the bottom of the page isn't nearly enough! Overall, though, I like this theme. It will probably be my focus for the winter.

I actually like the dinosaurs more than I thought I would, but the sets themselves really aren't screaming for my attention. I was thinking there would be a bit more scenery involved... I don't see myself buying more than one or maybe two of the smaller sets. And I'd love for Jake Raines to be part of the crew, but I think the some of the details look WAY too modern for him to be in the theme. The trucks have a very modern vibe to them, especially with that color scheme that would look ridiculously out of place in any time frame that Jake could have starred in. I'm thinking the Jake head that we see there is a placeholder.

Yeah, I agree about the Jake Raines bit. That would be QUITE a stretch for him to co-exist with high-tech jungle safari machinery. Perhaps LEGO is just using his head as a stock head now?

Is it just me or the helicopter does actually have shape and design like Republic Dropship of Star Wars ?

Yes because the dropship is based on a helicopter (skycrane) that this new set is based on

Also according to the Polish description and my ability to translate text with Google, gave me a small sentence about the story. It will be a classic styled dinosaur story, with scientist. Meaning it will probaly be similar to Dino Attack, only the setting is probaly on somekind of Island. Altough in the background of the set with the raptor you can see what look likes skyscrapers in the background. But this may be due to the quality of the pic
