Kintobor Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 (edited) So despite getting some decent ideas from all of you for Karie's Minstrel look, none of them clicked with me. They were all either way too out of character, or just didn't meld together right. So after some thinking, I present Minstrel Karie. The main inspiration was 20's lounge singers and a bit of the Blues Brothers thrown in for good measure. Thoughts? Edited July 9, 2015 by Kintobor Quote
K-Nut Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 It's very different than anything we've seen so far in the game costume wise, and I think that's actually really cool. I don't see it so much as 20s/Blues Brothers as I do 80s alternative rock. It looks neat, though! Quote
Flipz Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 (edited) Yeah, deffo needs a cape--I think the purple one Witch Karie is using would still work well, or a black one with stars if you own one. I'm also not a huge fan of the hairstyle--it's not flamboyant enough. Maybe this if you have it, or this as an alternative? I do like the rest of the outfit, though. ...actually, I kind of wish you could stick a black fedora on Karie's existing hairstyle--would work really well and add to the blues vibe. Sadly, there's no black fedora that can stick on that first hair option you showed. Quote
Endgame Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I would keep the ponytail, but the rest looks good. Alos, sorry 138ers/137ers, I had company over today. rest assured you will get to go to Moone within the next couple of hours. Quote
Kintobor Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I don't own the Black Widow Hair Piece (nor any Marvel sets, so don't suggest any pieces from that line) and I don't believe I have the star cape anymore. The Red Harrington hair was a piece suggested and I did try it and I simply didn't like the hair head combo. It made her head look as if it was angled and it looked way too flamboyant, even for Karie. I don't know how I feel about a cape, too, but I'll try it. I also want to stray away from the ponytail. As much as I love that piece, and as much as it symbolizes Karie, she's a different person than the one who stepped into the hall three years ago, and I think a hair cut is in order for her. I can stick a fedora onto her person, though. Thanks for the opinions, and keep them coming! I'd love to hear some more before I settle on something final. Quote
K-Nut Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 There's also the shorter Ponytail you could use (Amber's hair but in Dark Orange) if you want to mix it up. Quote
Duvors Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 There's also the shorter Ponytail you could use (Amber's hair but in Dark Orange) if you want to mix it up. I think Kinto already has that peace. Quote
UsernameMDM Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Eh, a bit too modern looking for my tastes. I would personally use this as the base: Quote
Lind Whisperer Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Honestly, if I didn't know Karie was a woman in this picture, I'd just be thinking she was a slightly effeminate man. Not that that's bad, that's just what the torso + the hair makes him - I mean, her - look like. Quote
CMP Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Interesting. Only slightly less badass than Drafter Atramor. I'm not sure there's enough...going on. When I make a new version of Atramor I always try and cram as much miscellaneous crap in there as possible - giant hat, at least one cloth accessory, some kind of bandolier...something to I guess round out the minifgure and make it stick out. A lot of heroes use oversize hats/hair or capes or armor or something. There's a lot of choices with what LEGO puts out nowadays. Armor obviously isn't the way to go here so if you have some kind of cape that'd be cool. Consider throwing in some dark red to go with her makeup, because there's got to be some color in there somewhere with such a simple torso design. I'm not totally sure about the hair choice. Neither the color nor I guess relatively small-ness of it goes super well with the solid black/white color scheme. Maybe have her in a pose where she's taking off/putting on a black fedora? Hard to do but it might work. Honestly, if I didn't know Karie was a woman in this picture, I'd just be thinking she was a slightly effeminate man. When Lind looks less like disheveled con man trying to cosplay as Link, at that point you can critique the fashion choices of other heroes. Quote
Flipz Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 You can always use Blue-tac or clay to stick extra hats and accessories on. Quote
Kintobor Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 So the general consensus is the hair needs to be changed and there needs to be more stuff. I can strap the guitar to Karie's back with the clay or something, but I'll have to look around for some sort of a hair change and the inclusion of more... stuff. If anyone else has stuff to say, I'd like to hear it. I mean, this is what Karie's going to look like until I retire her or switch to Rogue Thief for a few quests (which I doubt). Quote

Honestly, if Kinto's going for a jazz musician look, I think more stuff would make it work even less. Jazz isn't one of my genres, but I picture the musicians as being very laid-back, very relaxing, very smooth, and very visual symmetrical. Fifty pounds of gear greebles is not smooth. And a huge bag strap cutting across her torso is very not symmetrical. Quote
Myrddyn Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Yeah, I like it - has David Bowie vibes, I think, but maybe adding a sword or something would make it more fantasy-ish? Or maybe something in the background - a wall in a few different browns and greys, or her sheep or something? I mean, Gibbin doesn't look that fantasy-ish either, but he does have a sword, a cloak and a chicken. Quote

K-Nut Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I think just adding another color would add some life to it. Atramor, for example, has tons of black and white, but he also has a bit of a purple highlight to add some contrast. Quote
LordoftheNoobs Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Yeah get some purple or dark red in there. Maybe pink would work too. Quote
samurai-turtle Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I changed out of that outfit, but my camera still doesn't have batteries... What type of batteries does you camera need? She's a minstrel. She can't use swords. Or daggers. Or anything really except instruments. Well she is carrying an "axe". Quote
Lind Whisperer Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 What type of batteries does you camera need? AAs. Which I really need to get around to remembering to buy...Well she is carrying an "axe". I like this idea! What if you either put an axe blade onto the guitar, or you put some parts together + some string to make a combination axe/guitar thing? Quote
