Dannylonglegs Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 (edited) Don't do that to yourself--it doesn't matter what the setting is, you can always draw thematic elements from other things even when the settings are different. One of the first things I realized when I started looking into writing as part of a professional career was that stories are universal. You could set Heroica in space or in Rome or in the modern day, and you could still find many of the same characters and many of the same stories and themes. Things would be different, but they'd also be the same--because people are people are people, always. I'm sure you've read Campbell, whose work exemplifies certain universalities of storytelling, but I'd also recommend looking into structuralism and semiotics--keeping in mind, of course, that neither is the be-all end-all of literary theory, but they're good starting points for analysis. Exactly, Star Wars fits a fantasy setting perfectly. Just replace star-fighters with Dragons and you've got the Inheritance Cycle. Seriously. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited June 25, 2013 by Dannylonglegs Quote

Dannylonglegs Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 We miss a chance for XP and waste a smoke bomb while at it. To be fair, this is the first time Sylph's ever refused a chance for XP and loot, and unless we have to fight a reasonable mother leopard that agrees to let us go or something latter on, it will likely be his last. If the Spider had said, "No, my Young must feed on your flesh." instead of "Go now!", Sylph would have had no qualms with killing it in Self defense. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
Capt.JohnPaul Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 If someone eliminates all bad people. There is only one bad person left. And then it gets complicated. Is the Fantome bad for killing bad people? This is exactly how I make people think. Do ends justify the means? Do some people deserve to live? Have you considered everyone's points of view? How would you feel if you were deemed "bad." How would you feel if you were a victim of "bad people." It's interesting to see how people view this subject. Quote

The Legonater Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 It's hard to say what exactly I draw from, because my mind is like a sponge, absorbing pretty much all media I read/see/listen to. A lot of what I write tends to have similarities to dozens of different things, at least from my perspective. That said, some primary sources definitely include SW and LotR, though I do want to crack open Game of Thrones eventually, as well as Discworld and some Lovecraftian stuff. Star Wars itself eats up a lot of my eating time, but once I finish trudging through the NJO series I might pause and take some time to look at other stuff. Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I think someone asked for this... And I suck at Paint, so I sketched it instead. I'm not too pleased with Karie's face, but whatever. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
Kintobor Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 -snip- I like it! The face is a wee shallow, but it looks good! Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I like it! The face is a wee shallow, but it looks good! Heh, sorry. I thought there was something off about the face, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I've never taken a drawing class, so I don't really consider myself an artist. I'd love to learn, but for now I'm a definite amateur. Also, I've never drawn a woman's face at that angle before. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
Zepher Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 (edited) You should take a drawing class. I have, and I can tell you that you are talented enough that it would be worth it. Besides, you seem to enjoy it. 68ers, just a few more updates, sorry. I still promise to get you out of there within 12 hours of this post! Edited June 25, 2013 by Zepher Quote

Flipz Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Well, never thought I'd actually be saying this, but... My Scrolls and Lens? Complete waste of time and money. I can't believe I tried to buy even more before 66. What was I thinking?! Quote
Endgame Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) Hm? Being able to get two moves, and incapacitate/stack multipliers/whatever in one round seems pretty good to me... Plus, I've completely neglected your Sleep and Weakening scrolls. Edited June 26, 2013 by Endgame Quote

Zepher Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Yeah, gotta say, there are quite a few across the board immunities/specials. I'll comment more after the quest. It is admittedly something I am working on too. Quote

Endgame Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Yeah, gotta say, there are quite a few across the board immunities/specials. I'll comment more after the quest. It is admittedly something I am working on too. Balancing for a scroll mage who can dish out 304 damage on a hit, while other party members deal 30, is nightmarish. Don't want the other heroes to become ineffective, so instead I make all of those multipliers harder to get to. I don't pull punches on Specials, though. Every Syndicate member has had a different specialty thus far, so I have quite a pool of specials to utilize. The Bomber is actually the first reused enemy thus far. Quote

It can be hard to balance a quest for one member that deals 288 damage on a single crit while another tops out at 10. Quote
Endgame Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) I wouldn't mind if you nullified some of my advantages, as long as they're built into the enemies and not built into me. (As in, takes away Encouraged on rolls of damage, etc.) Thus is how the game flows. Edited June 26, 2013 by Endgame Quote
