CMP Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 My new avatar doesn't look too computer generated, does it? When it's impossible to make any of it in actual LEGO it does. Quote
Bricksandparts Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 When it's impossible to make any of it in actual LEGO it does. Point taken, but I meant as far as the looks, it doesn't look that much like it was computer generated does it? Quote
Brickdoctor Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Yeah, the color overlays on those pieces looks very CGI-ish as opposed to a physical print. If you have to use them, in Photoshop I would suggest making them a little noisier, dropping their transparency, and playing around with one of the texture or artistic filters to find one that'd give it a slightly more pixelated look, but I'm not sure what program you're using. Some of the pieces aren't cleanly isolated from their backgrounds, too, and those hard edges, sharp corners, and slivers of white make it look more artificial. Quote
Bricksandparts Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Yeah I see what you mean, the problem is that I'm using (Yeah I know it sounds silly) powerpoint... I don't have a professional photoeditor, so I worked with what I had. If I tried, I'm sure I could improve it a tad more, mainly the custom pieces. Actually, I'll go see if I can get a static background to give it some realisim. Quote
Cryos Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 First off, wow. Congrats on making that on POWERPOINT. But I suggest using LDD if you want to make something. It's free, and if you want photorealism you can just render the picture afterward. Quote
Bricksandparts Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Ehh, I've used LDD and I'm never found it to be the best software for making pictures, at least for minifigures. Quote
Cryos Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 http://ldd2povray.lddtools.com/ Here's the site but I cant actually tell you how to do it. Alas, I own a Mac. And it's not mac compatible. Quote

Brickdoctor Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Although it must be said that that's a very large model, so if you're doing renders of small pieces like minifigs, the realism will of course decrease as you get closer. Quote

Although it must be said that that's a very large model, so if you're doing renders of small pieces like minifigs, the realism will of course decrease as you get closer. Well, that is expected I guess. I'm looking through the flickr page trying to find some rendered minifig's right now, actually. But the community really loves their mechas. (Just putting that out there if anyone wanted it http://www.flickr.com/groups/2097225@N25/ ) Quote
swils Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Also, B&P, I recommend you pick up GIMP, it's free. I thought I'd heard rumors that one of the older Photoshop suites was made free recently, but I can't seem to find anything on a quick google search. Quote

You need an Adobe account to download it, and if you're using a Mac, this is a Power PC application, so you need to be running OS X 10.6 or earlier. Technically, the download is intended for people who bought CS2 and want to install it again, because Adobe didn't want to continue running the activation servers. The intent wasn't to provide it for free; there's just nothing (other than moral judgment) stopping people who never bought CS2 from getting it for free. Quote

I may or may not have had a cracked copy way, way back when CS2 was the newest version. I gave up on morals long ago. But yeah, GIMP is freeware and worth looking into. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 And if the GIMP learning curve proves too difficult, Paint.NET is a good option, too. Much easier to learn than GIMP, I think, just not as powerful, at least as far as I know without plugins. I tried both and ended up sticking with Paint.NET until I got Photoshop. Quote
CMP Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Meh. If you know how to use it, MS Word ain't bad. I've been using it since Quest 69, and just look at all my amazing special effects in Quest 82. Quote
swils Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 I don't think GIMP is any harder to pick up than Photoshop. Unless, of course, you're switching from PS to GIMP, because then you have a similar GUI but just different enough to throw you off. I've never tried Paint.NET but have heard good things. Quote

Palathadric Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 LDraw all the way! I do have to say though that the minifigs still don't look that great in LDraw and LDD, though. The one that I just put as my avatar is about the best I've gotten thus far, although I have to say that I haven't taken an enormous amount of time to try different ones out. Some faces are smoother than others also. Quote

Endgame Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 (edited) I find myself echoing Zepher's sentiments about cutscenes. Blergh. Hopefully that tirade is atleast slightly realistic/entertaining. Edited November 9, 2013 by Endgame Quote
Kintobor Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 I thought it was good! Also, to anyone signing up for 91, we will most likely not be back in time for Baltarok. Just want to get that out there before people start freaking out when the trilogy's about to ship off. Quote
