Zepher Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 (edited) Why? I'm hoping to model, with 102, my new belief that there should be a mix. There should be easy and hard and in-between battles. That way, sometimes you level up quickly, sometimes you don't. What's the harm in that? EDIT: Players have been clamoring for shorter battles mixed in with the longer, and as QMs I think part of our job is to listen to what everyone thinks will make a good game. Bricksandparts Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 No I understand that there should be a mix. I'm just saying that the leveling system discourages QMs from doing so. Quote
Sandy Posted June 17, 2014 Author Posted June 17, 2014 Just peeping in for a minute to say thanks for the birthday wishes. I went to bungeejumping for the first time in my life (a fit activity for someone turning 30, eh? ), and the partying continues now, so until tomorrow! Quote

Zepher Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Yeah, I have to agree, how? You're the QM, you call the shots! Quote
Bricksandparts Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Because it would seem like you are giving your players free levels. really fast battles, even if realistic, mechanically give the same XP as a boss battle. I don't know, maybe I'm just used to Endgame's quests... Quote
The Legonater Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 There's been QMs who hand out XP for more than combat. I remember Zepher gave us XP for peacefully resolving a situation once. Quote
Endgame Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I have to question the point of the snake battle too, to be honest. It's obviously going to be over in a round - sure, it's a free level fro the lower heroes, but why not just make it a roleplaying event? I mean, I'm assuming you're going to wait until everyone's actions and a BO is posted, so it is the equivalent of "Wait 24 hours for free EXP!" Quote
Brickdoctor Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I disagree that a battle needs to have a point. Why can't there just be a quick and easy battle? It can break up any monotonous stretches of the quest and it does add a bit of realism in that not every battle you'd fight would realistically be that important, and not every battle you'd fight would involve an equally skilled enemy. Besides, I don't know about you, but I've invested enough time into my character's build that it's satisfying to occasionally be able to just dominate an opponent. Quote

Yeah, but it's not because of the party's power level or their build or whatever. It's just a 'gimme' battle. Wasn't there a big deal about that in Quest 7? I always challenge my Questies, personally. Quote
Endgame Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 It just seems to break the pace and hand out free EXP for little reason. If you like their roleplaying, give them EXP for it and just crush them outside of an actual battle sequence. EXP is one of the most desirable resources out there, so seeing it being handed out on a "gimme" is odd. Quote

So there is a point to it being so, even if it'd be easier to not have a battle. And it'll cause intra party tension as some characters object in character to an 'easy' battle. Quote
Palathadric Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I could have sworn the AIUPIIUP was not "Immune to Instant Kill" before. I normally wouldn't stand by needlessly easy battles, but I think the way Zepher brought the battle about makes me perfectly okay with this one. I think the ridiculously easy battle also will make the heroes think twice about attacking the snake...maybe that's just me. Quote

Kintobor Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I'm okay with the fight, if only because the party really had no "best" scenario whether they attacked the snake or the frog. It's having two choices and not wanting either of them, but in order to progress the party has to make one, and I think it's a great character building moment. Quote
Flipz Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Happy Birthday, Sandy! Hope you get lots of LEGO! Quote
StickFig Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 (edited) Why not just make it a roleplaying event? I think it's a great character building moment. The entire lead-up to the battle has been a roleplaying event.... The way Zepher brought the battle about makes me perfectly okay with this one. Really it was @Purpearljellyblob who brought about the battle; @Zepher handed us a situation and it got roleplayed extensively... one character didn't like the outcome, so they did something about it, and now lots of other characters are at the very least uneasy with the situation. And it'll cause intra party tension as some characters object in character to an 'easy' battle. e.g. Matthias used to think Purpearl was about the closest thing he had to a friend in Heroica, but now he's a lot less enthusiastic.... I think the ridiculously easy battle also will make the heroes think twice about attacking the snake...maybe that's just me. Since half the party did nothing, and one of the two who did attack roleplayed it as an accident, I think you're right... Edited June 22, 2014 by nstickney Quote

Flipz Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 I love love love how Purpearl and Nerwen dislike each other for the very trait they have in common: their Elvish self-superiority. Quote
Zepher Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 I absolutely agree! And 102 is just getting kicked off! Quote
Myrddyn Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 I don't think that snake could have beaten even one of those heroes! Purpearl and Matthias both have ranged attacks (or spells), and they're both Blessed, so damage rolls wouldn't have done anything. One of Alexis' counterstrikes would have won the battle! Nerwen could have killed it with a roll of "miss"! This isn't meant as a complaint, I'm just quite amused by that fight. Sure, you couldn't really have something like that happen too often, but once in a while, I feel it's good to make sure we aren't taking ourselves too seriously. Next on Heroica: Famous heroes Guts Holla, Hoke Ablesword, Atramor Gibbin, Bartholomew Docken and Hybros team up to fight the dreaded... Rat Type: Vermin Level: 1 Health: 6/6 Special: Foul Bite – Causes poisoned-effect to the target, making it lose 1 health each turn until the effect is remedied, the target is defeated or the battle is won. Drops: nothing Will our favourite knights' shields hold up against this most feared of all creatures?! Quote
Flipz Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Just to let everyone know, I will have limited internet access tomorrow--I might be able to get on mobile, but no guarantees. Quote
