The Chosen Minifigure Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I'd like to think EuroBricks is a little classier than even discussion sections on various news sources on the internet. Maybe it's the minifigures. I think people would be a lot more civil if LEGO was used to explain things. Eurobricks is the second greatest community I have been in involved in. And yes, KOTZ, it is the minifigs. Quote
KotZ Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I was just going to say that. Well said! Well said! Emoticons help too. Who can get worked up when they see this little thing in a post: Dawww!!! Just think of the political elections! "Who are you voting for?" "Oh, I'm voting for Johnny Thunder, I really like his foreign policy." "Really? I'm going with Danju. His education reform ideas are top notch." Quote
Zepher Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I've met quite a few people in our major that have said "You can't write female characters because you're a straight, white male." It is different, mainly because traditional gender roles are ingrained in society (be that good or bad, that's a different debate) so maybe it is more difficult, but who says you can't write a blind character even if you can see. That's the beauty of art, film, writing, etc. The thing created is not real, but it's supposed to feel real, or how you perceive it would be. Absolutely. I'm sorry if my post earlier suggested that I don't think we should be able to write people outside our own gender, ethnicity, sexuality, economical upbringing, etc. I wasn't attempting to suggest that. I think we absolutely can do it, but I think there are two dangers: the people who refuse to take on the challenge, and those who take on the challenge as if it is not a challenge. I again believe that all people are equal, but that each an every person is equally diverse as well (not a profound statement, obviously) and that simply ignoring it is an equally bad solution. Embracing and valuing every component of the person is the route I think is best, and that can be more challenging if it is not something you've experienced for yourself (again, obviously). People who ignore that challenge and don't put in the work create hollow characters, in my personal opinion. Quote

And I agree, people are equal but we're all equally diverse. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 *pauses for a moment to consider skimpy female armour.... With equal focus on all dat armoured man too* Ahem, yes right. That is what I like about Heroica, the roleplaying. Hence my hiautus during an intense period of writers block (My poor fanfictions were all neglected even!) I love the diversity and the trope challengers and even the trope followers! Though I also respect the consideration for the setting with the real world parallels, it makes for better writing and consistency. Quote
Scubacarrot Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) That's the plan! I mean, I can always go back to Raider if I end up not staying a Dragoon, might as well try it. With the changes to the class, now seems like as good a time as ever! Okay, scratch that, I guess. Thwarted! Missed the discussion about the smithy and the reworked version. It's a shame it had to be changed, in my opinion. I heard only good things about the one in #96, the difference is that Emjajoas' was too complicated, I am guessing. Shame. Asphalt Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 That is quite the smithy. I am interested in seeing what you all do there. Quote

Scubacarrot Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 It was the prices that were too cheap. Was it? I calculated it for what Emja showed and I reached 900 gold to change it from a dagger to a spear. I mean, that's not EB event 2015 levels of expensive, but still pretty expensive. Quote
Zepher Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Oh, I don't know about that service in particular, it was the poisoning and effects that came into discussion. I didn't weigh in on it either, personally. 900 gold seems fair enough to me for a weapon type change (or perhaps even a little costly, though I guess in the long run you'd be saving a lot of gold). Waterbrick Down Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) It was more an issue of tailoring, while the smithy in 96 allowed for a random effect and weapon transformation, the current one allowed a player to build a weapon and armor too specific for relatively market price. In order to maintain balance for the rest of the game one should be careful when asking heroes to design their perfect weapon/armor much less ask them to pay market price for it. Flipz Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I, personally, would probably have just copied the Q96 smithy wholesale, if I was looking to make something unique. Then again, cribbing off of other QMs does seem to be my style. Rusty Chainmail (SP: 2, Immune to Stunned and Poison) That's got to be one of the best low-Level Artifacts I've seen in a long while. Emjajoas Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I didn't know 96 had done something similar, or I definitely would've consulted it before putting up my own. And yeah, I made a couple big mistakes with the Smithy that I had to fix right away-- Really sorry for the inconvenience to all the questees, but hopefully I'll be able to make it up to all of you. It's definitely a service I'd like to go back to someday, but I'll definitely be more organized next time I explore it. Quote

You were doing it for the benefit of your players, so you should be commended on being a good QM in that regard, just maybe a little too generous. Quote
Yzalirk Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I'm super excited now that I have my new character up! I wonder when a quest will be up giving out Bonaparte reputation and/or Artisan though. I hope not when I get chosen for a quest. Quote

CMP Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 (edited) I think we all do an okay job of maintaining a fair mix of 'historical' accuracy and some modern-day norms to make the world more accessible. "Wow, okay. I'm pretty sure that means you are completely useless to us. Way to make a man excited. Do we look like people you want to appear useless to?" Guts sighs. "Maybe we're best of plundering this guy's shoddy setup and moving on." Nerwen picks up the bright purple Katana hanging on the wall beside her. She gives it a couple of experimental swings, the blade cutting through the air with an audible noise. She smiles sweetly Every weapon here is spoken for? Is this a shop or a storage locker? Given that making new weapons is what you are fastest at, if you did sell us any of these, the sword point swings around to I dictate the large number of weapons hanging on the walls You could simply make another to replace it quickly. The sword point arcs back to point at the smith. Believe it or not, I'm likely the most patient and gentle of all those standing in your shop at the moment, so take the hint when I say my patience is wearing. "What you are offering is both useless and ridiculously expensive. Frankly, you it is just insulting. How do you expect us to leave, empty-handed AND insulted?. Nice to see the players are understanding of the situation. Edited January 12, 2015 by CallMePie Quote
StickFig Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 "Humanity as a whole is a stain, but each individual is a treasure...." Whoa, need a swimming pool emoticon, that was deep! The thing is though, what should you do when your character encounters a race that his race is historically against, with minor good reason? Attack them! Best thing about a fantasy world - if Matthias ever meets a [insert historical enemy of the gnomes, not sure there is one], they'll have a battle royale! Heck, Purpearl pretty much attacked everyone in #102 just because that's her character! ... vampires as a potential Zombie Apocalypse scenario that could suddenly be unleashed at any moment... VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE. Hmmmmm, so are Vampires really even a race then? Rabbit hole opened successfully. Let me just pop in that I am quite pleased with how civil this discussion is remaining. ...Good Show old boys. Way to ruin it with your gender-biased plural group noun. Pig. I think people would be a lot more civil if LEGO was used to explain things. I don't even want to think about minifigures explaining Lind's earlier post about Athens and Sparta. People who ignore that challenge and don't put in the work create hollow characters, in my personal opinion. I feel suitably chastised - this is actually one of my personal failings with Matthias. I built a starting character that was too close to my own personality, and I am struggling to build more into him now. A lot of my frustration with #102 was not that Matthias was put into unwinnable situations, but that I felt like I was as well. That's got to be one of the best low-Level Artifacts I've seen in a long while. Concur. Quote
Lind Whisperer Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Attack them! Best thing about a fantasy world - if Matthias ever meets a [insert historical enemy of the gnomes, not sure there is one], they'll have a battle royale! Heck, Purpearl pretty much attacked everyone in #102 just because that's her character! The problem is, the Munchkins are historically a people that are protectors, not aggressors. Lind has grown up being taught to defend, not to attack unprovoked. I've somewhat written myself into a corner with the character for the moment. Hopefully, my plans to leave the Fields with a certain high-powered object** will pay off. If they do, then Lind is over-powered when he goes Black Knight, which opens up all sorts of RP possibilities. He could go Knight Templar(with a slight subversion in that when he behaves that way his actions are still generally right), become a literal Black Knight*, etc., etc. Of course, there is the part where you're not supposed to base your character on future possibilities...which works better when you've focused on your potential RP from the start, which I haven't. But, if this does work, it'll make a perfect "reset button," giving me an excellent reason for him to suddenly change his core feelings and emotions. I mean, if you were in the real world, and you suddenly got a WP: 50- Uh, really over-powered object, I mean, wouldn't you go a little crazy? *There would probably be a lot of this mixed confusedly in. The same with Knight Templar. **Yes, I have run the numbers. It is possible. (Thank you, QMs, for Challenges! ) Quote
Cutcobra Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 So, now that there's a Vindicator class: Heckz Brutenhal, Vindicator to Himself Cuz He's Obviously The True God Of Beauty (shortened to Vindicator of H.C.H.O.T.T.G.O.B). Plus titles. And don't forget, "Oath of I'm Better Than All Of You". Quote

Matthias is a plenty complex character, don't you worry. Quote
