Zepher Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 It happens, especially to first time QMs (I think there are a few over complicated items out there that I've tossed out, and even Sandy made the Healing Staffs which I will never ever ever forget about ), but I've said it once and I'll say it again: confusing/broken artifacts/classes are certainly things that factor into my desire to host someone or not. I can't speak for everyone, but some of the items are just down right pains and suck the fun out of QMing just immediately. I don't know if this is still the practice, but for at least my first few quests (up until 53 I remember doing it, which was my 7th quest) I submitted every unique drop to Sandy for review. I think it's a good idea. And even with that some weird stuff slipped through the cracks. Actually, I know I did it up until 68 because I wanted to drop something that granted immunity to both doomed and instant death and then Sandy told me it was too powerful. And then he releases stuff like the Blue Hand shield. Quote
CMP Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 I don't know if anyone else does this but I just run all new items by Sandy in the quest pitch, and that pretty much resolves most item-based issues... Quote
Lind Whisperer Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 (edited) EDIT: Never mind, I'll do as CMP suggested. Edited January 26, 2015 by Lind Whisperer Quote

Waterbrick Down Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 I operate by a prior art system, if it already exists and was dropped by one of the more experienced QM's I'll tend to let it fly without a check, but if it's a new effect on a weapon or mechanic or consumable, I'll tend to run them by Sandy first. I think Zepher's brought this up before, but it can be an awesome thing if QM's reuse items from previous quests. Not a lot, but two or three of a good item never really hurts. Quote
The Legonater Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 I'd say not, because spears are unsuitable to mage classes except Battle Mages and Mimes. So the weapon is basically limited to those classes. Yeah, that's on me. It was definitely meant to be a staff. Has 'Suitable for Magic Users' really never been used before? I could have sworn I've seen it. If it's a huge problem it could just be changed to a staff with it's usage, because that was the main intention anyways. Quote
Flipz Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Yeah, that's on me. It was definitely meant to be a staff. Has 'Suitable for Magic Users' really never been used before? I could have sworn I've seen it. If it's a huge problem it could just be changed to a staff with it's usage, because that was the main intention anyways. You've seen it because a lot of QMs handled it that way before Sandy cracked down on the practice. Last I recall, the only weapon that still exists that is "allowed" to have a unique suitability is Nyx's Book of a Thousand Creatures. Quote
JimBee Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Yeah, I've invented a few items myself, early on in Heroica. I believe in Quest 18 I had a flute (before instruments were in the game) that was only suitable to mages and clerics, so basically a staff. And there was also a greatsword (Sword of Decay) that was suitable to knights, barbarians and mages. Both of those have been retconned, however. Quest 29 also had the Twin Broadswords (WP:20, dual-strike, user cannot use a shield, suitable to knights only), but I still think something like that is acceptable because the tradeoff of the item is between dual strike and defense specifically for the tanky classes (also, this was before Expert Classes so I could extend the suitability to Regulators as well). Whereas there's really no point in restricting items to just a few classes for minimal bonuses. Quote
Sandy Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 Duly noted, changed both. Sorry, folks. I don't ask every newer QM to tell me if they are going to drop unique items for no reason, mind you. It's always better to check with me beforehand than get scolded publicly, isn't it? Actually, I know I did it up until 68 because I wanted to drop something that granted immunity to both doomed and instant death and then Sandy told me it was too powerful. And then he releases stuff like the Blue Hand shield. Times change. Quote
JimBee Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 I have to say, I really like the new looks for Atramor and Arthur. It will be interesting to see how these new classes play. So far, even though Arthur could use a bit more luck, the build seems to be really good as a debuff/support role. Power up spells with Forecast while flinging scroll castings with every turn. The Assassin/Necromancer combo should be interesting as well. Quote
UsernameMDM Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Anyone have any quests coming up? After this one is over (which looks like it is, unless, of course, there is a TWIST!), I want to make a run in the Fields to get a Decamodifier, but don't want to miss out on an actual quest. Quote

I may actually finally be able to submit mine for Sandy's approval - I've been waiting till my schedule was settled, so I could plan things accordingly. Since it's my first, it's just a simple dungeon-crawl style scenario, but there will be* a couple of nice drops and a medium sized pile of gold to compensate for that. *With approval Quote
Zepher Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I don't know exactly when I'll be hoping to host it, but fairly soon (within two or so weeks) I'm hoping to host a quest for knights, clerics, and their advanced classes (and anyone who was previously or currently a paladin). It's anyone's guess which faction it might focus on. Quote
Endgame Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) A blizzard knocked out my power (posting from a restaurant's wifi.) 24 to 36 more inches of snow expected within the next 24 hours - back to back blizzards, followed by another 8 inches on Friday. I need to move to Florida or something. Edited January 27, 2015 by Endgame Quote

If anyone is interested in fight just 5 battles or as many until Zepher and any other quest posts, please let me know. Zeph - what's the 'length' of the quest? Short, med, long? Quote
CMP Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Watch, then a hurricane will knock out your power. Or an alligator will eat your laptop. Both entirely plausible if you're not careful. Quote
Zepher Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I'd be trapped there too if I wasn't away right now. Best of luck, Endgame. Sounds interesting! I wonder when FoG sign-ups will post. If anyone is interested in fight just 5 battles or as many until Zepher and any other quest posts, please let me know. Zeph - what's the 'length' of the quest? Short, med, long? I'd say "med" is a safe bet. Probably 2, 2 1/2 months tops. But those predictions aren't always spot on. Quote
Sandy Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Sounds interesting! I wonder when FoG sign-ups will post. The Fields are already open for sign-ups, have been ever since the previous party left. JimBee has promised to be the next host for the Fields. What comes to new quests, I have no quest pitches waiting (except for Flipz's upcoming spring quest). Quote
UsernameMDM Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 The Fields are already open for sign-ups, have been ever since the previous party left. I meant is there a current 'due' date, but I guess no one has signed up to go. Quote
Zepher Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Yes, sorry, I didn't mean to flaunt a new quest before running it by you, I just have to figure out when I will actually have the time to host it which means seeing what the semester looks like first. Quote
Kintobor Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I've been thinking over the Fellcreste quest I've been planning, since I've got the sets built for some of the areas, but I'm running into some road blocks. If someone wants to co-QM this thing with me, I think it'd be a fun time. Quote
Flipz Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Welp, I think I've figured out the best way to balance for Dragoons. What a weird battle. Quote
