I kinda want to see what Grogmas gifts come into existence before I do a whole lot of purchases, but I think there's a couple I can make right off the bat.

Is there a known use for that book already?

No, I'm just assuming it will have some use, or if not it will at least have some interesting flavor text. When I was talking about waiting before making a ton of purchases, I was mostly referring to the special orders.

I'll tackle them next. You can expect to see them by the end of the week, if all goes well (and a New Year's fireworks don't blow on my face).

It will be interesting to see which gifts that will be selected.

Take good care with those fireworks!

Don't lose a nose OR any fingers Sandy. Leads to a lousy new year.

Or an arm...

Or your memory...

Take good care with those fireworks!

Oh, no! I'm not going anywhere near fireworks - I'm way too scared to light them up myself! :oh3: But there's always the 0,00001% chance one might fly right into my face out of nowhere.

...you do realize that the smaller the odds you give, the more likely it is to actually happen, right? Using round numbers doesn't help, either. :poke:

It's just plain bad luck, but I'm not sure which is the result of which.

i think we've found the solution to balancing battles. Make all heroes automatically lucky at the start and all enemies automatically jinxed.

I guess that's a negative on the extension... :sceptic:

Yes, it is. Both factions have a candidate on top, so there's really no point to drag it on further. I think the people who wanted to have a say in the matter have already said it...

There's still 24 hours to make a change, though.

Fully fair...but Crescent doesn't actually have a candidate on top. It's actually a tie. Check your PMs...

Well, it's that time again. I'm making progress behind-the-scenes on preparations for my next two Quests, but I still need help with sets--specifically, buildings and indoor scenes. If anyone's available to assist, I'd greatly appreciate it.

With all of this Crescent union: Freedom, Black flag, Unity, Syndicate etc ideology I thought it important to note that one prominent irl Medieval Republic - The commonwealth of England (under Oliver Cromwell ) failed dramatically and ended in the reinstitution of a monarchy. :shrug_confused: And that I sincerely doubt that any future faction events will include civil administration of any sorts. Heroica being an organisation of Mercenaries, not lawyers.

And that's what makes it so difficult, I think we can all probably agree on the benefits of a republic if we were able to micromanage the entire Heroica economy and world, but the game is about heroics unfortunately and not politics no matter how much we want to try and make it that. Lind is noble in wanting to enact it, but it's really not feasible (game-wise) for him to actually fulfill on his promises. :shrug_confused: Plus in a fantasy settings it's hard to argue absolutes (i.e. dynasties have led to tyranny) as their could easily be examples that counter that argument that haven't been shown or created yet in the game world.

Actually, the commonwealth worked quite well. The trouble was that instead of having elections to find a worthy replacement for Cromwell, Cromwell handed his son the chair - and Richard was not a terribly good Protectorate.

Sometimes a civilization isn't ready for democracy. In particular, one that's heavily dis-unified and has no national identity will do poorly with representative government; at best, you get interminable stalemate as all the disparate factions squabble over what should be done (see: many modern governments), while at worst you get uprising and revolution as the various non-majority parties decide to take their ball and go home. And from their perspective, why would they accept being overruled? They've spent their time in the past being able to freely do what they want, so long as they have enough muscle to back themselves up. They have no patriotism, no nationalism tying them to the rest of the society. With the total number of different factions being so large (and thus their portion of the population and overall military might being so widely divided), there's no reason for them not to revolt to get what they want...which in this case will lead them straight into the arms of the Wolfgang.

I should also point out that if we're bringing real-world examples into this, the USSR started with an idea of a number of rulers temporarily ruling absolutely until their dictatorship was no longer necessary. We all know how well that ended. If we're going by history, promises of "I will only keep this power as long as necessary" are not to be trusted, since they inevitably end up being claimed to be "necessary" forever.

Or...you can have a case like with the United States.

Where there was massive dis-unification at its creation.

But people persisted. And in time, it thrived, and it's still around today, two hundred years later.

Which is why we need to offer them something even better than the Wolfgang. Ulric's trying to make himself king, to rule over them - but a republic offers them that power.

In a republic, they have the power over their future.

Except the USSR was also trying to enact Socialism. Lind isn't trying to do that, he's attempting to bring about a republic. Not a Socialist state.

I think we're starting to take this whole election thing far too seriously.

I love how irrelevant all of this is going to be considering the electees are an NPC and a straight up king. But I do like the conversation.

I wanted to have a say...
