Sometimes a civilization isn't ready for democracy. In particular, one that's heavily dis-unified and has no national identity will do poorly with representative government; at best, you get interminable stalemate as all the disparate factions squabble over what should be done (see: many modern governments), while at worst you get uprising and revolution as the various non-majority parties decide to take their ball and go home. And from their perspective, why would they accept being overruled? They've spent their time in the past being able to freely do what they want, so long as they have enough muscle to back themselves up. They have no patriotism, no nationalism tying them to the rest of the society. With the total number of different factions being so large (and thus their portion of the population and overall military might being so widely divided), there's no reason for them not to revolt to get what they want...which in this case will lead them straight into the arms of the Wolfgang.

I should also point out that if we're bringing real-world examples into this, the USSR started with an idea of a number of rulers temporarily ruling absolutely until their dictatorship was no longer necessary. We all know how well that ended. If we're going by history, promises of "I will only keep this power as long as necessary" are not to be trusted, since they inevitably end up being claimed to be "necessary" forever.

Or...you can have a case like with the United States.

Where there was massive dis-unification at its creation.

But people persisted. And in time, it thrived, and it's still around today, two hundred years later.

Which is why we need to offer them something even better than the Wolfgang. Ulric's trying to make himself king, to rule over them - but a republic offers them that power.

I'd say one of the only people who was "I'll have power only as long as necessary" was Washington.

Except the USSR was also trying to enact Socialism. Lind isn't trying to do that, he's attempting to bring about a republic. Not a Socialist state.

Just wait, power corrupts, or is it people who corrupt the power? :poke:

I think we're starting to take this whole election thing far too seriously.

Eh, it's more fun than the current election cycle I'm slogging through right now.

Actually the Romans had a system where a dictator would be nominated to lead in times of peril, and then would give up the title once the job was done. It actually worked well, until Ceaser decided 'dictator for life' had a nice ring to it.

Oh right. Thanks for that. Been awhile since I've even looked into ancient history.

It worked well...until Caeser. Whereas America is still working well(for the most part, anyway.:laugh: ). Bit of a difference there. Edited by Lind Whisperer

Sure, but Rome was around for a few hundred years prior to Ceaser, and stuck around a few hundred years afterwords. It's hard to make a comparison for a country as young as the US.

But one could argue Rome as well, Rome, didn't exsit anymore after Caesar. Once he came in and turned the system on its head (followed by Augustus and the rest of the emporers), there really wasn't anyone who could or would be able to step in and return Rome to as it was before it became an empire.

I give less of a toss about systems of government than a quadraplegic shotputter, ( what I mean to say is the topic is losing relevance but I couldn't reist the joke) so let's move on. My marxist utopia may be classless but I'm not so let's raise the fact that Jun Ji Pei is gonna be the very best, like no one ever was king and that the faction storyline will be played out in quests, not elections.

I find it very amusing that people think the U.S. government can be described as "working". Oh, yes, our government is doing an excellent job of making sure every voice is heard fairly and equally, and acting in everyone's best interests, not just the interests of a few. :sarcasm:

Not sure why there's such a huge surge of support for Jun. Did he really super impress people last time he showed up, or do people just want to avoid making King Guts an actual thing?

There isn't such a huge surge, really. Hybros and Atramor have 5 votes each, and Warlen has 3.

Tesni voted for him, too.

Atramor has been there since (basically) the beginning of the Ji Pei's main story arc, he's seen all of the Ji Pei at their worst but also knows of their full capabilities.

Althior casts his six votes for Lord Lawrence Boomingham.

Seriously? You're not even going to try and make this remotely exciting? :poke: Come on people, where's the love for Eric? Boomingham didn't even give any crushing speeches!

Seriously, I was hoping for an Eric/Guts clash of kingdoms. Now neither of them will be king. I should have joined the Crescent Union to push Guts through.

Anyway, Guts needn't be king in title, but he can still kill the other kings easily. :devil_laugh:

Tesni voted for Shanxian, actually - I don't think Jun was even mentioned in her post.

I hate basically any NPC that is A) needed to be escorted and B) incredibly fragile, and Jun is both.

I think the event ended five hours ago, so I don't believe either of the last two votes count.

Fair enough. Either way, Guts wins, or I don't lose Necromancer, so....

Actually, I don't think Na'im voted at all, so I guess just that one,

Yeah, I don't think you'd even be able to side with the Crescent Union unless you changed classes. I've seen a lot of messed-up stats but that would take the cake.

A tie is still cool!

Chronologically, it only happened after 137, so he'd only have to be de-educated in the ways of Necromancer after.

I'm also hoping for some kind of Wolf Followers recruitment event because getting any amount of Wolfgang reputation has always been a big pain.

First page of the union topic mate-I think I was the second person to support Guts :)

Still I don't see why Sorrow can't jion the union-I mean it's not as if the Ziegfrieds can make him forget all his necromancer knowledge & training, just take away his reputation with them

So sorry 139, still busy with the holiday season it seems, I have to go visit my grandmother today but then I am legitimately finished. :sadnew: I will be able to get full updates tonight. Particularly sorry to those of you still stuck in the desert.
