Flipz Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 (edited) The heroes in Quest #31 should learn not to judge a book by its cover, they have already decided that a man witha beard is evil. This is a Brickdoctor Quest. He reads Darths and Droids. It's a tradition. Edited April 22, 2012 by Flipz Quote
Kadabra Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Grammar lesson mode on! "-mancy" is a Greek root word that means "divination" or "prophecy". "-mancer" refers to a diviner. Therefore, "necromancer" means one who attempts to divine the future using bones and dead body parts, while "aeromancer" means one who divines the future using wind and weather patterns. Many other "-mancy"s existed back then, such as pyromancy, hydromancy, and cryomancy which have already been explained, but there were other weird ones like rhabdomancy, meaning divination via rods. All of these were seen as unusual and mystical, but necromancers, due to the macabre nature of their art, were seen as witch doctors or evil wizards. "Necromancy" eventually came to mean something more along the lines of "black magic" than "divination via bones", and the other classical elements (pyromancy, hydromancy, cryomancy, aeromancy, geomancy) followed and changed from "divination via <insert classical element here>" to fire magic, water magic, ice magic, wind magic and earth magic respectively. When I created Arasmyth, he described himself as an "aeromancer" as part of my self-imposed ruleset (You may only use Wind, Lightning, and Water magic, but you can't use Water magic in battle, when I become an Evoker, I may not switch classes at any point for any reason and may summon only a Wind spirit, I may only utilize Wind, Lightning, Water or Ice imbued weapons or Bombs, if he dies I must make a new character. Why, may you ask? Just thought it would be fun. I'm the kind of person who does Nuzlocke challenges on their Pokemon games), and the naming system sort of stuck. (If someone before me used this naming system, I apologize, I only briefly skimmed the pages of the Hall before I joined so I may be mistaken in the belief that I was the first). I believe Heroica mages are Pyromancers, Cryomancers, Hydromancers, Geomancers, Electromancers, Herbomancers, Aeromancers, Necromancers, and Photomancers, if I have my Greek roots right. Oh, and here's a list of some of the weirder "mancy"s. Quote
Flipz Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Electromancers I think that might be Voltomancer, though I may be thinking of a Latin root instead. Actually, what WOULD be the Latin version of "mancy"? Quote
Rumble Strike Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Very interesting stuff, Kadabra. Thank you for that. I must admit, I just think you can use the -mancer suffix with pretty much anything and it just sounds so cool and mysterious Quote

Hey, you're right, it DOES sound really cool! Quote
Waterbrick Down Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Grammar lesson mode on! "-mancy" is a Greek root... Thanks Kadabra. Do you really plan on restarting with a new character if Arasmyth is KO'd? Quote
JimBee Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 So what happens if it's in the middle of a quest? I'm sure most QMs would be none too happy if they had a high-level quest and one of their party members turned into a Level 1... Interesting stuff on the mancers, though. Quote

I'm sure he would just reroll a new character once he returned from the quest. An interesting choice indeed and it would lend itself to always having new characters being introduced in the hall. If anyone's interested I've got a whole party of characters already built if you're thinking about rerolling: minotaur knight, werewolf cleric, dwarven rogue, metasimian ranger, half-troll barbarian, and rockling pyromancer. The Legonater Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 "This is Admiral Mathias Thraune. He was formerly an artist on Uland who supported our settling here. He officially joined our navy nearly a year ago, and has since proven himself a tactical genius. You'll be traveling to Dastan aboard Admiral Thraune's new flagship. The eighteen-gun brig Chimaera is the first of our fleet built from the keel up for use with cannon. I see what you did there Quote
CMP Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 I see what you did there I just got that. Awesome reference. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 I see what you did there I just got that. Awesome reference. I don't know if anyone got the more subtle reference: eighteen is the combined number of the primary, heavy, and octuple barbette turbolasers on an Imperial II. Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Wow Kadabra, that is some interesting info! I didn't know there were more than several "actual" schools of magic aside from necromancy ending in -mancy. For those of you wondering, this is Erfworld. It's not as bad as it looks. I was bored one day a while ago and I decided to give it a shot and I liked it. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

Uh, anctually, I didn't know that. Was it mentioned in the first or the last novel of the trilogy? If not, in the second book (the one I haven't been able to find in bookstores)? Or was it only from the technical maunals? Also: did you create the Lion Knights just so they could be associated with the legendary creature chimaera just so you could make that joke? Quote

Also: did you create the Lion Knights just so they could be associated with the legendary creature chimaera just so you could make that joke? I looked it up on Wookieepedia and combined the numbers of certain batteries to get a number of guns that would be realistic for the size ship I wanted to have. No, it was a happy coincidence. Quote
Zepher Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 QM Note: Leofard is the stern knight with the longsword. Leonard is the leader of the Lions with the dark red cape who was in Bric'Lin in Q4 and in the conclusion of Q17. Lawrence was the commander of Bric'Bay Fort in Q17 and hasn't appeared in this quest. This is why we have a NPC Index. Quote
Waterbrick Down Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Ever worried about the current situation, I walk into the Library. Byblos- that is your name, correct?- what can you tell me about the Kingdom of Dastan? Quite a bit has already been said about Dastan in that topic's thread already, which is why Byblos hasn't answered that question before, just read a few pages earlier. Quote

I've got my own line-up as well. If Arasmyth dies, I'll start playing as a female dwarf cleric, if she dies, I'll play a male Dragonborn knight, if he dies, a Rockling rogue, if she dies, a Sharkling ranger, if he dies, a Orc herbomancer, if she dies, a naga cleric, the list goes on and on and on.
