Tanma Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 For those of you wondering, here's a larger picture of Alexis' new outfit. (And yes it is still a dress.) In the words of so many fandoms, "Ruined Forever!" ...Well not really, but it is kind of odd seeing Alexis with that hair. As others have voiced the color and lack of braids are...difficult to associate with Alexis. It's kind of like the uncanny valley really. Quote
Sandy Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 Sandy, thanks for the U'Kin shout-out (I know Madame Butterfly was already around, but thank you for keeping the species name ). Someday we have to put together an index of all the different races of Heroica. Pongcanis and U'Kin crop up every once in a while now. I think thats (yet another) one of the wonderful things about this game. As soon as a species or idea or group is introduced, other QMs jump at the chance to reference it and use it, because there is such a great respect between the QMs! It just happened I had no race name for Madame Ladybug yet, and the appearances of the U'kin came at an opportune moment. I've also been toying with the idea of a race index, but on the other hand I don't want to restrict anyone's creative juices. I do have at least one more new race in my sleeve that uses the tan heads of Barriss Offee and Luminara Unduli, so I really hope nobody thinks of using them before me. Quote

Don't worry, when I designed the new outfit, I always planned to go back to some form of the old one. I was just getting a bit bored with it. As for the color, I reasoned that since she spent so much time in the sun on her last quest her hair would have changed color. Quote

He will definitely have to shun you. I do prefer the old Alexis, but I wouldn't say this one is too horrible...I've seen worse. LEGOman273 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 On the topic of Alexis: I like the dress (), but the hair is a bit odd. If you gave her the old hair (and maybe the cape), she would look great. Quote

I do have at least one more new race in my sleeve that uses the tan heads of Barriss Offee and Luminara Unduli, so I really hope nobody thinks of using them before me. I just picked up one of those sets for the Lucustoids and was wondering what I could do with Barriss' head. I think a race index would be really neat, it wouldn't have to be exclusive, it could just include things about the race that the different Parties had already found out about. By restricting anyone's creative juices do you mean that other people wouldn't get to create more races or that you don't want people to be limited how they portray a particular race? I don't think there would be any problem with the former, I wouldn't see why people have to feel that there are a set amount of races. If the latter, I think the people who created the race i.e. with the Pogs, Brickdoctor should be shown a little respect in that other QM's who use them should try and keep a consistent portrayal just out of common courtesy. We strive to do this with NPC's why not races as well? Now of course there can be outliers, Skrall is one for example, but I don't think a QM should go in a completely different direction with a race, i.e. change the Pogs from meat-eating warriors to vegetarian poets. If you want vegetarian poets, then use your creative juices and create a new race. Quote
CMP Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I agree with WBD. Personalities for different races aren't entirely set in stone, just the names and general behavior of them could be useful to other QMs. In any case, there's always the edit button...by that I mean anything can be retconned if really necessary to make things fit. Sandy Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 By restricting anyone's creative juices do you mean that other people wouldn't get to create more races or that you don't want people to be limited how they portray a particular race? I meant a little of both, I guess. By giving a list of races some people might feel restricted to use only those listed, or the specific variant of the race based upon the description. Remember that there are many types of humans, so why couldn't there be many subcultures of orcs, elves, Pongcanis and U'kin, as well? I guess this issue can be fixed with a note about creative freedom added to the race index, if/when someone compiles it. I look forward to seeing wht you do with them! Alright, since there's apparently some interest towards the heads, I can tell that the Barriss/Luminara heads form an all-female race called nôrns that hail from the high north. Some of them came to Eubric in the past because Norsemen Vikings destroyed their home village, raping and killing most of its residents. I have a quest planned featuring the nôrns, so you'll find out more about them then. Just don't ask how they reproduce, because I haven't decided that yet. Quote

Just curious, would characters who play Drows just be classified as elves? As far as I know they are just a ethnicity of elf with a different culture, and we don't seperate Nur and Haldor for instance. In game the response might be different, but I am just curious. You could go the implied Gerudo route, or perhaps base their reproduction off that real life species of reptile with only females. Quote

He may be thinking of hosting a Quest with race-specific game mechanics, but as far as I know we don't have any Drow players. I'd love to see a Duregar, though- Dark elves get all sorts of attention, but no-one cares about the poor dark dwarves. Quote
LEGOman273 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 (edited) How the Nôrns reproduce: The Nôrns are virtually indistinguishable from Humans biologically; however, there is one large difference: Whereas in Human females the phenomenon of X-inactivation is found (one of the female's X chromosomes is deactivated, allowing for the father's X or Y to be passed on to the offspring), Nôrns have Y-inactivation; Nôrn females are able to deactivate the father's Y chromosome, ensuring that the offspring is always female. The Nôrns were forced to rape, as they cannot produce male offspring. Male Nôrn have been born through genetic glitches, but, due to their culture, these offspring are killed at birth. Umm, thanks for the suggestion, but raping men and killing their own babies doesn't quite fit what I had in mind for the nôrns. Quote
CMP Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Then I assume this sort of thing is out of the question. LEGOman's general idea isn't completely off. Maybe nôrns can just reproduce with other races normally, but the offspring is, for some complicated genetic reason, 100% of the time a female nôrn. Nôrns are still an all-female race, aren't doomed to extinction, and with no rape or murder necessary. Quote

Maybe their race has been recently doomed to extinction because most of the males were killed by the norsemen? Quote
