I will keep my commentary for the end of the quest. Heroes are tougher than you think. There was outrage at all the battles of last round, but Cronk and Alexis walked away with hardly a scratch, and the Zee party almost won even though they DIDN'T listen to the warning.

We love you, Zeph. But we also love complaining. Don't take it too hard.

Yeah. Battling QMs for an edge on the rules is just part of the game.

Nyx was even quite nice to Zee, although I doubt that would have made much difference in the long run. :cry_sad:

And ditto.

I have deliberately not looked at the specific numbers of potential health lost (I just don't want to know) and I've just picked the best actions I can think of for the NPCs. Heaven help us, is all I can say. :cry_sad:

Felton!! :cry_sad: Damn it. Roleplaying has forsaken me. :wall:

Atramor pushed his way through the horde of Pongcanis violently. The Explosive Staff served well to force the hairy beings out of his path, and the eerie pink blobs of venom helped to keep them from attacking. Panic became slightly evident as he stumbled from between the Chaos Beasts and fell into line beside Triad. The weapon wavered in his hands as he held it ready. He may have been Lucky, but he couldn't be feeling less Inspired or Encouraged. The advancing mass of opponents seemed to grow even larger as they approached. There was something wrong. There had to be. He'd faced death mere hours ago in the cemetery, why did everything feel so hopeless now? Who was this fool standing in the path of oblivion? Instinct overcame whatever had brought him to the brink of suicide. When Triad next looked, he had fled. The lack of talons grasping his shoulder never occurred to him as he bolted down the staircase.

Battle Order

Atramor

Triad

Death :sadnew:

Wait, why are you running?! With that staff, you will take ZERO damage from Free Hits, which makes it a cakewalk if you fight from the Back Row! Or am I missing something? :look:

If you're thinking about trying to join one of the other battles, I doubt Zeph would let you join, based on what he's said during the Apothecary/Hovels/Cemetary battles. :sceptic:

If I land a hit, yes. But even being Lucky can't guarantee I'll land a hit often enough to keep every single one paralyzed If I fail this first single roll (failing includes rolling a Shield, unfortunately...) then it's literally all over in one round. And ultimately, it's not worth the risk. Each battle already has one person down, and it made me realize how severe of a risk this is. And yes, I know I probably can't join another fight. But look at how difficult the battles have become. I'd rather Atramor still be around to help out in one that doesn't depend on a single die roll.

I've screwed up enough this Quest.

Do or do not, there is no try. I have never meant this more literally; if I fail once, we're both dead instantly.

I figured we might be able to get a bad roll once...I did not expect for there to be more enemies than the battle in which we had half the party with us. *huh*

I don't see why you didn't. The battles are only going to get tougher from here on out.

I just hope why don't have to split up quite so much from here on. I feel bad having to make the decision when things go wrong.

At this point, looking back, I honestly think it would be more productive just to keep the party all together. We would have all our Phoenix Essences handy in the exceedingly difficult (because we could only hold one spire at a time) final battle. From the looks of it several will have to be used in the current battles...

I'm seriously hoping there's not more than one non-finale battle left in this Quest, actually...if the difficulty level remains as it is, then we won't HAVE anyone left for the final battle. :sceptic:

Also, Zeph, if Felton dies, I am going to kill you. No pressure!

We went two for three last round. We may do so again. I'm hoping my party won't have to use our essences. Couldn't use one on Flipz even if we wanted too. And Pandora's party isn't doing terribly. It's hard to keep NPCs standing, they're going to be the first ones to fall. Probably the only reason Felton didn't last battle was Zepher's mistake about his SP.

I'll save commentary for the conclusion!! :classic: I have a lot to say.

Are you kidding? How many NPCs are still alive?! Way too many. A number more heads will roll. :cry_sad: I don't think I'd be good at a finale if I didn't kill some people I loved.

As for Felton, I said each NPC had a different number of times they could be KO'd and still be okay. I guess you'll just have to hope Felton can be KO'd more than once!

CMP, I had such a good perma-KO planned if things went poorly for you. I think this is the better choice. I would have been interested to see you try to make it, and your strategy was pretty sound... but you're right in saying your luck probably would have run out. I was hoping Triad would live. I had a plan for her in other quests. :cry_sad: Au revoir, brave warrior.

In other news, I HIGHLY recommend everyone watch this video: http://www.penny-arc...ode/power-creep

Said it before and I'll say it again: There is *nothing* wrong with gold, consumables and "vendor trash" as loot. There's so many special effects out there now that 'unique' weapons are almost more common than basic or just elemental weapons. I'll be honest, it's going to be hard to convince myself that any weapon lacking a special effect could be stronger than the utility provided by the stun on the Frozen Saber. It would take a huge WP jump to get me to consider switching. I feel spoiled by it. Everything else seems to pale in comparison. I'd not be surprised if people who have dual-strike weapons or similar felt the same way.

Acerpusculum are supposed to be extremely hard to kill, though, right? Right?? :cry_sad:

Oh crap, now I have to go back and get Triad's Cowl....

Probably the only reason Felton didn't last battle was Zepher's mistake about his SP.

Yeah, SP has become a requirement in this game. Not that that's a bad thing, but sometimes I wonder if our discussions make that clear for new players--probably not, seeing how few players actually spend money on SP:1 Leather Caps and Robes of the Magi.

Sometimes I wish that Heroica had a tutorial, for stuff like this. Yes, I know a QM taking new Heroes on their first outing are supposed to help make things clear for them, give them an experience that really shows them the ropes of the game (Rumble Strike's Quest 32 is the definitive example of how this should be done, though CJP has also been doing a GREAT job with this on his current Quest, with the possible exception of Effects, but I'll likely be eating my words come next battle  ), but I still wish we had a "Player's Handbook" that explains the tricks we use on an instinctive level; yes, it's clear in the rules that certain elements are strong against certain types of enemies, but unless someone asks, they don't know WHAT elements are best for beginners, and what elements they should try to get next. Sandy's early Quests are a great "how to" guide, as are most of the early Quests, but at about Quest 12 and onward, the Quests start to revolve more about themselves than about basic mechanics; the majority of players knew how the game operated, and the Quests began to add new elements of their own; that's about where we started to get to the rules lawyering that's become common now. (Yes, I'm aware that real-time-wise it's roughly where I joined the game, shaddap. ) The thing is, Heroica has evolved substantially since we first started, and we can see from when Skyrimguy and PsyKater and obelix and several other of the "newer" characters joined that learning the ropes has become substantially harder (just look at how many times PsyKater had to post in this thread before she even started her(?) character!). Hopefully once the current cycle of finales has ended, we can get a few more Quests that aren't trying to subvert the "traditional" formula, but regardless I think we need to look at making some more new "tutorial-like" Quests like Pie's Quest 51 and Flare's Quest 42 (though admittedly, that one HAS run a bit long for a "traditional" Quest ). Even for experienced players it'd be nice to have sort of a "recap", especially for those poor souls who either are hosting or are thinking about hosting Quests in the near future.

. (Seriously. Watch this!)

Topic 2: I WILL do a new Theatre post soon, but in the interrim:

. SO much this. ^_^ (Also true for Heroica, though pretty much all of our series-builders are pros. ^_^ )

I will have more to say on other stuff soon.

EDIT: :distress: Pie, you do realize that Arthur will never. EVER. Forgive Atramor for this...right? :look:

EDIT 2: Like I am dead serious, one or the other will NOT be around for the next battle. PERIOD.
