Zepher Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 A twist in the tale! Zeph, I hope you have both of these two lined up for the next XX Quest. It's up to them to sign up to the next Quest with XX. Of course I'd relish the chance to have any of my old questies embarking on another story with me. I never imagined this floor battle would cause so much contention! I also apologize for those who thought this was the real final battle- I thought it was an obvious joke, but can see how it would be misconstrued. You've still got a bit to conquer, in this quest, even if we're on the tail ends of it! Quote
Flipz Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 I never imagined this floor battle would cause so much contention! Counterstrike automatically does that. It's an easy way to ensure the party overthinks their strategy, if only due to the psychological effect of it. Hex, Petrify, and to a lesser effect Confuse and Curse have a similar psychological effect--Petrify reads as "instant KO" (without the subconscious "well that's unfair" reaction that we all have to insta-KO specials but refuse to admit into the conscious mind--do note that I'm talking about instinctive psychological reactions, not rational analysis), and Hex provokes the reaction of "damn I wish I hadn't spent my money on weapon upgrades". Confusion, of course, is a weaker form of Hex, and Curse puts pressure on the Heroes by setting a time limit (in a way that poison and all its various forms cannot, since they can be kept at bay with healing). Well, that and the fact that the one obvious solution would result in the entire party getting perma-KO'd. Counterstrike automatically does that. Now that I think of it, I really should present an analysis of why. Basically, Counterstrike on an enemy means that the Hero will be taking Damage on up to six out of six rolls, depending on whether or not their SHIELD deals damage and what the enemy's Special is like. Heck, if the floor here dealt damage on its special, then Nyx would be guaranteed to take at LEAST 13 damage on any roll of any kind; she'll take double damage from her SHIELD and Counter rolls. Hoke is a goner if he rolls a SHIELD versus the darn thing. In other words, any roll that does any sort of damage to the enemy is inherently disadvantageous, and since the floor is immune to Effects, that means we HAVE to take serious amounts of damage just to scratch it. Not complaining, I'm just trying to explain why it's so darn scary; you've virtually guaranteed that we either have to sacrifice the majority of the party, or else go with Atramor's plan and miss out on experience, which is a bit frustrating. Pandora Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Heck, if the floor here dealt damage on its special, then Nyx would be guaranteed to take at LEAST 13 damage on any roll of any kind; she'll take double damage from her SHIELD and Counter rolls. I pretty much always attack from the back row, so that would be the case for SHIELD and Counter rolls, so I wouldn't be taking double damage. Max damage to me from any permutation is 25 (two halves of 25, and I believe the rounding down that most QMs do will probably make it 24 in total). Quote
Flare Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 (edited) Wait, but counterstriking is according to the level... so shouldn't that just mean that the floor will always damage you with 25 damage unless you roll Special Damage?? Edited February 24, 2013 by Flare Quote
Pandora Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Wait, but counterstriking is according to the level... so shouldn't that just mean that the floor will always damage you with 25 damage unless you roll Special Damage?? I was under the impression that Counterstriking by an enemy was the equivalent of its normal attack (ie the same as any normal hero taking Damage). Thus its normal attack would be equivalent to its level (25) and so would its counterstrike, which would then be halved as I'd be attacking from the back row. So, if I land a successful hit, I get struck once (25/2), but if I roll a Damage then it hits me (25/2), I hit it, and it hits me again (25/2), presumably, thus a total of 25 (or thereabouts, depending on rounding down, etc). And this seems to me to be the maximum damage I can take in one round. Quote
Zepher Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 (edited) Wait, why would rolling damage have you hitting it? If you roll damage, it will hit you, but still in that case the most damage you can take is 25/2-SP, so you'll be safe! Ah, I believe you're talking about if you roll a counter. Understood. Endgame Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 The floor has obviously been recently mopped by Schezerade, making it incredibly slippery - she just neglected to put up a "Caution: Wet Floor" sign. Thus why it counterstrikes... don't slip and fall, 53ers! Also, ouch. Went to the bar mitzvah Saturday afternoon and came back Sunday morning. Quote
Palathadric Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Also just wanted to say I am really enjoying Quest#58. The party have a great dynamic and the bar is populated with so many wonderful characters. Agreed! Great quest thus far! Quote
Flipz Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 One last thought before I go: I am totally calling that when Gray and/or Wren die, the Lost Party will go off into a Lost-esque afterlife together. Quote

There will be a lot of pissed off players should Heroica end inside a multi-faith chapel. I didn't bother putting it in spoiler tags, because quite frankly, it's been over for three years. Most who were going to see it already have. Quote
Scorpiox Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 There will be a lot of pissed off players should Heroica end inside a multi-faith chapel. Nah, end it like Ashes to Ashes, where everyone just goes off to the pub (with the whole series being essentially one big metaphor). Quote

Dannylonglegs Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Can a blinded character use Scrolls? It simply says in the rules, "no physical attacks," which would lead me to believe a blinded character can use scrolls. Is this a correct interpretation? ~Insectoid aristocrat Quote

Dannylonglegs Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Do scrolls have braille? I mean, they are blind, after all... Clearly, plus, blindness only heightens a true magician/cleric's other senses, and they can smell the words on the page. It's Science. Smell a book. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

Zepher Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 It depends on a few factors, but a "soon" would be appropriate. Quote
UsernameMDM Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 If Hoke gets a spellspin (1 action) does the Floor Counterstrike for each hit or just for the 1 action? Quote
