The Legonater Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Deals "Asleep" and is suitable for anyone? That Support Beam is pretty powerful. I figured I might as well reward ingenuity. Nice one, Legonater. Now you're learning how to do it right. And then in turn 'reward' them for lack of common sense. Speaking of which, I keep misreading Quest 64 as "Disco In Duplovia". Whatever works, I guess. Quote
Palathadric Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Finally, Hybros stopped at Elphaba's, and knew that she would be leaving soon. A good investment, he thought, would be to purchase some of her wares and sell it at an inflated price to heroes who missed her. He purchased another Topaz, Sapphire, Ruby, and Garnet for 400 gold. I think I was scared off by doing so by comments like this. Suddenly I realize why Jim Butcher is rolling the die poorly for us. He's trying to keep us away from Elphaba so he can sell at inflated prices to us! Quote
Zepher Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 A New Orleans accent, WBD? Perfect. I'm actually reading Confederacy of Dunces right now- you've nailed the accent, and it is beyond perfect for the character. I have to say, there are a HUGE number of species in Heroica. It gives it a sort of sci-fi feel, I don't know how I feel about it. I think an introduced species should at least be expanded on a little (WBD, you ALWAYS do that, so don't take that as a slight to you). Sandy, the only complaint I have about ANY of your pictures ever is the alien and patrick... they don't fit Heroica at all to me ascetically, but perhaps that's just me. There are a huge number of species I love (both as a species and ascetically). I particularly love the ones invented for the story itself: Nagas, The Aoi, Grumpkins, Were-Lions, U'Kin and Acers (tooting my own horn a little bit) are some of my favorites. "I've been meaning to try out those kick-megablocks moves Mr. Holla showed me, to the dancefloor, U'or!" I laughed, I won't lie. Quote
The Legonater Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 The Phibians weren't ever supposed to show up. When the crew of Quest 64 decided to head to Newharbour (something I didn't see coming) the Phibian was a character I had made long ago just for fun, and I figured I might as well throw it in. I may incorporate them into future Duplovia quests somehow, because they just amuse me from an aesthetic point of view. Quote

"Sci-fi feel"? Well in my case, the only minifigs I own other than the basic fantasy species are from Star Wars, so I'm sure that doesn't help. Quote

Yeah, I would have to say that I've thought them (the small factions or races) as a bit unnecessary. Why not develop the dwarves or elves (two species that have surprisingly not been touched on that much) before making another species that will only appear in a quest or two? I've never said anything because I figured, hey, it is everyone's world to create, so why not? But yes I think it's better for QMs to cooperatively develop pre-existing species before introducing new ones. Then again, my character is the only known member of his species in existence... so I'm one to talk. All in due time, though! I have made some big plans for Hybros recently, which I hope will take a more direct approach to roleplaying rather than waiting on things to happen. Quote

I can see this being true for other locations, but Eubric is sort of the melting pot of species, which is why we see so much diversity. I would expect other lands like Dastan or Terra Chima to be more limmited as far as representing species. Quote

Well, there was that one Orc and a few goblins, but apart from that. The Sharkling coming-up is not really a native of Brendenton. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited May 1, 2013 by Dannylonglegs Quote

At the same time, though, I'd expect said far-off lands to have very different species represented, due to the fact that they're on entirely different continents. Quote
Zepher Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 (edited) Oh, I agree no doubt, but there are still a MASSIVE number of species. I'm guilty too, I've invented more than my fair share. I'm just saying I'd like to see the ones that we already have further developed, and maybe lay off the new species for a short while. Think about lots of good fantasy (classical or modern, high or low) and think about how many species really live in them. Then think about how many we have. Not trying to be a Negative Nancy, just thought I'd throw it out there! Doesn't mean stop inventing either!!! We have, by the off of my head count: Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Grumpkins, Proggs, Were-(Lions, Gators, Lizards, Bats [assuming that's what Riley is], Wolves, Ravens, Turtles, Newts, Panthers, Alligators (again, different than the other were alligators)), Vampires, Were-Wolves (different than other werewolves), U'Kin, Naga, Dragons, Orcs, Ogres, Trolls, Giants, Imps, Halflings, whatever Ratabor is, whatever Dek'ra is, Rito, Moonelves, Undead, Fairies, Witches (appear to be sort of a race?), Aoi, Sharklings, Norns, Fenerian, Acerpulseum, Metasimian, Rocklings, Sayyips, Lucustoids, Phibians, as well as intelligent Frogs, Crabs, Dogs, Pigs, Chickens, Goats... and that's just off the top of my head. Would it really be so bad to expand on one of those races instead of making up a new one? That's not even counting some of the "one offs" we've seen so far. I know, as I said, I'm guilty too, but I'd love to see us expand on those before we go any further with other races! Edited May 1, 2013 by Zepher Quote

The Legonater Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 It's definitely a valid point, and my future quests will definitely have some expansion of both races I've created for Duplovia. I think the key difference between Heroica and most fantasy stories is the sheer number of people involved. There's at the very least a dozen or two QMs, and over 50 players, if not up to 75 or 100 (these numbers are total speculation). With that many people directly involved, there's bound to be a large influx of ideas. It's part of the reason Heroica is still going strong. Quote

The way I see it, we just try to incorporate everything LEGO throws at us... and we've done a really great job of keeping it coherent thus far. I've condensed your list a bit... I believe all of those "intelligent" animals can be crossed off of the list (magically enhanced?), were-whatever can be condensed as Werepeople, and variations of elves can be given the axe as well (There are plenty of variations and different cultures of humans) Ratabor I always thought was just a pale humanoid, and witches more of a profession then a species. (Atramor looks nothing like Elphaba or Baba). The trimmed list is far less daunting, and minus a few stragglers (I don't even think Spelljammer had omnicidal molluskorpions, Danny! ) is about on par with other works of fantasy. Quote

Spelljammer had allot of fun things. I can't wait for Lego to make Neogi. Gods I love the Neogi. Nothing says fantasy space than a space-faring slaving eel-headed spider with a backwards and barbaric life-cycle that rides giant insect-people. Mother-megablocking Neogi. On the subject of Races and strange DnD products from the 80s, I think Heroica's race selection is actually smaller than DnD's at this point. Talk about your high quantity of fantasy races there. They give Star Wars a run for its money. There's probably some valuable Veno- wait what? Oh most definitely! A veritable Cask of Amontillado to be sure! ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited May 1, 2013 by Dannylonglegs Quote
Zepher Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 But were-people can't be condensed, because they all have their own cultures. It may just be a taste thing, I'm just saying, I'd rather see an expansion on some of them other than everyone using a new race as a crutch to create a new exciting character. Make the character interesting, don't just invent a new race. Quote
