Dannylonglegs Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 (edited) In other news, following the most bizarre Arena battle ever, we have... the most boring Arena battle ever. You're telling me. Probably the longest too. I think we should all three of us devote an IRL hour to finish this battle. It's gone on for days. Oh! I just realized! Shouldn't my Ranger's Quiver be calculated into the damage rolls? ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited May 15, 2013 by Dannylonglegs Quote
LordoftheNoobs Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Also, we have a TV Tropes page now. Thanks to Endgame for actually starting the thing and prompting me to actually make an account. I've been adding trope examples all afternoon. Ugh, FINALLY! Quote

To be fair, I have no tonics and he has no remedies. He could use a bomb, but that would hardly damage me. I could use my venom, but that might save me one round in the long run while costing me one round to aply. I cannot damage him as of yet at all basically because of his obnoxious SP and he cannot touch me because he's blind and by virtue of his new class cannot use magic. when I run out of ether things will get interesting if I haven't killed him, since he's right in saying I depend on luck to beat him still. Once he gets a clean shot at me I'm toast because he can 1HK. That's why I'm not playing fair. I've done the math. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

Dannylonglegs Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Then why did you challenge him to a duel in the first place? So that I could go first, blind him and then slowly chip away at his armor until I could kill him. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

Even the resident tank thought it was a bad idea. I thought it was a bad idea for someone dependent on SP to take him on. (Plus I don't really do Damage; my Damage is dealt through tanking Free Hits and Counterstriking, something that doesn't exist in the Arena*.) A big Damage-dealer like swils, posades, WBD, or DD could probably do well. Flipz could probably pick him apart with scrolls the same way you are; he has a Scroll of Armor Sundering. *Granted, I also have a Blinding weapon, so I could probably try to do what you're doing. Exactly, though: There aren't many people who can do it. If your weapon is better than his SP you could. One of the truly heavy hitters could too without the use of blind, granted he doesn't get them first (High WP, high HP), and Flipz could certainly, and likely easier/quicker than I due to his high volume of scrolls usable per turn, but Alex has a very powerful build that most people/enemies have a hard time beating. that's why I wanted to test the strategy I'm using on him. So far, my only failure was not applying poison early on, but considering I don;t want to waste any real resources on a no-XP-gained battle, I don;t view that as a blunder. I may not be the best to beat him, but I will try. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited May 15, 2013 by Dannylonglegs Quote
Scorpiox Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 So this is wrong? Granted, that article's a little more in-depth and interpretive than even I'd like, but what about something like this article, or this one? Encyclopedias aren't supposed to make value judgments on the meaning of things; they're supposed to catalogue factual information on a given subject. So, (extremely short) example article: -snip- Not really giving any meaning, just facts. If I wanted to use Sem's Sensible investments in a Quest, this would be pretty much everything I'd need. Yeah, that wikipedia article would have been fine it it were just a plot synopsis and explanation of themes, but not a complete shakedown of the book. There's no point in reading it if the wiki just takes it to pieces with little regard to it's concept of personal meanings. All right, I can understand the point of this wiki more now, however I still don't see it as necessary. If you want to know something about it, why not just ask WBD, he created the thing. And in reply to that Tropes page: valiant effort, but I fear that the job could consume whatever part of your life not already devoted to Heroica. This game is so chock-full of Tropes that it'd take years to complete. Quote
Flipz Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 All right, I can understand the point of this wiki more now, however I still don't see it as necessary. If you want to know something about it, why not just ask WBD, he created the thing. New QMs might not even know the place exists, and would create a new investment firm--not that that's a bad thing, but part of the charm of Heroica is how characters and locations get revisited from different perspectives and how plot lines cross over with each other (heck, that's part of what made Dastan so much fun). The point of the wiki is twofold: 1.) to catalogue those things that would otherwise fall through the cracks (the bit about trading in the metals market, for example, or the fact that one of the employees is a Triple Magic junkie, or the quote Scuba dug up from Sandy about Zoot and Azazot) and 2.) to catalogue THAT things exist, so other QMs can use them. A new QM could browse through the wiki, see the page about Sem's Sensible Investments, and--because WBD's name and profile are linked prominently--they could contact WBD for more info. I kind of alluded to this earlier, but I envision a wiki as primarily useful for QMs and potential QMs, as a resource to aid in Quest-building; for players, I'd still recommend reading the Quests and asking things in-character. Yes, individual Quests would have their own pages, but aside from a VERY bare-bones summary of the plot (think hardcover book dust jacket) the article would be primarily lists of things appearing in the Quest: characters, items, species, places, shops (with prices), events, etc. And in reply to that Tropes page: valiant effort, but I fear that the job could consume whatever part of your life not already devoted to Heroica. This game is so chock-full of Tropes that it'd take years to complete. The authors of the webcomics I read regularly troll me with TvTropes links; if I'm going to waste hours of my life there anyway, I might as well be constructing tab lists to compile onto the Heroica page. Speaking of which, there are several characters I'm having trouble finding tropes for, so: Random Question of the Random Time Period! What one or two tropes best represent your character? How about your (or others') NPCs? (I'm primarily looking for tropes that give unfamiliar readers a quick concept of the character at a glance, so for example: [[GentlemanRogue Thothwick]] exhibited this trope in Quest 14, when he..." Or, as the current page shows, "Amazon Chaser: Dogged Nice Guy Tarn Valco was this to Action Girl Tensi Hightribe early on." Speaking of Tarn, I do need a better trope for him, that one won't work everywhere.) Quote
