Spag did not enjoy his soon-to-be-leaders' attitude towards his 'childish behaviour'.

"Alright, alright, no need to get your knickers in a twist. Give a grumpkin a break, will ya!", Spag remarked as he rolled his eyes and sipped his drink. :hmpf_bad:

OOC: No problem.

'You should know, any other day, I would. But as I said, we're heading into a war-zone, and I have no idea what I'm doing. Do I look like a scarred war veteran to you?"

IC: De'kra's body twitches slightly at a new concern. De'kra had been too stressed out by his disappointment in his own mistakes from Quest 4 and from the past, along with his hatred of light, that he had forgotten about the plague sweeping across Heroica Hall. It was one thing when De'kra only considered the numerous masses of the Hall geting infected, but those two mages had brought up a good point; what if Cinna got sick? Or Tomas, or Barbarian of many axes and odd comments? What about Hybros and the heroes of Quest 4 De'kra neglected to name? What if all of them or any of them caught Rome Ant Icism? Now it was getting personal. De'kra would not let those heroes go al crazy-eyed and dull-minded, he would save them! And if this was Wren's doing, she would soon wish she was dead...

Externally however he just twitched once before waiting to see if anyone wished to communicate with him.

Althior looks at the book, slams it shut, and lays it on the table, "Now is not the time to be day-dreaming about your love interest kid. I'm usually in your situation right now, but that's not when I'm about to get into a war. It's your first quest, so I'll cut you some slack. Watch your tongue, and keep your eyes on the prize. Always be prepared, and you'll do just fine!" Althior was a bit pissed at this character. He had seen him goggling over this Cinna girl, while he had to leave Alexis, the one that he'd loved most, behind in Eubric as he set off for war. That's all soldiers did, leave their loved ones to battle other people with different opinions. What a misunderstanding! War was not, and would never be, his cup of tea. That's why he was glad he was leading these men. They'd play the game of war his way.

OOC: Nothing against you guys, I'm just setting things up for Althior in the quest.

OOC: I understand, I'm just glad that other people have picked up on one of Arthur's character development hooks. *hint, hint*

-==IC: Arthur==-

"Understood. I honestly don't know what came over me then. But you know," he says, sliding the book toward Althior once more, "'Tis never a poor idea to seek knowledge of the road ahead. The choices of the past may well hold the keys to the future. This tome holds knowledge of all the parties we are likely to encounter--the Brobric Elves, the Lion Knights, the Hinckwells, and the Shadeaux. It would be madness to go into battle without even a cursory examination of their strengths and motives. And, with all respect to the esteemed Heroes of that Quest, perhaps if we identify their mistakes we can avoid making them a second time." He nods at De'kra, who he knows is listening. "Even in failure, a Hero can still serve as a sign along the way, guiding those who come after them. No mistake is entirely bad, nor is any success completely without its downsides. We cannot be perfect, we can only do the best we can and trust to fate or the gods to take care of the rest, and that those who come after, and those we care about, may lay claim to a better world.

"And as for Cinna--well, 'tis always a good idea to seek wisdom from the example of others. She seems to be a good model of behavior for a mage, and Jen'Ber knows I need all the help I can get. I didn't train for years as a mage before I joined Heroica, like the rest of the mages around here. I gleaned perhaps a few months of training--mostly from wandering magical entertainers or exiled magicians down on their luck--while I journeyed here from my homeland. I must admit, I miss the place. 'Twas a simple life, compared to here, though no less quiet--everyone joined together to protect our lands from the vile monsters that rise to menace us every night. But it was simple, and a part of me misses that. And yet...

"That day, when my people discovered my powers came not from the enchantments of our land, gifted to us by the gods, but from an unknown power within me--well, even if I hadn't felt the call to adventure in faraway lands, I doubt my life would have remained the same. I know I can't go back to the way things were, and there's a part of me that misses that. Misses them, for I lost my people as surely as I lost my homeland. But in a strange way, that loss keeps them alive forever, no matter what fate may befall either me or them. The memory shall live on. I suspect it is the same with love. We all pass into legend someday, some sooner than later. But the memory of love is immortalized in spirit rather than in worldly memory, and it carries on with us to the next world.

"Besides, as mages...is it not up to us when our spirits truly depart from this mortal plane? Yea, moreso than any other mortal, for so as we experience the spirit world in life, so we can shortly grasp the mortal realm in death. We need never say goodbye, we need merely say...so long."

Arthur surreptitiously slides a scrap of parchment to Althior. He winks. "A remnant from my former life. Go to her. Reinforce that bond of the spirit. As a passing traveler once put it, two souls in love are 'parting and never parted, never and always touching and touched.' You and Alexis share a bond of rare strength. Enjoy it ere this time of trial."

OOC: I'll PM you what's on that paper.

Arthur Justus Regulus VII. VII=Seven in Roman numerals.

"I'm the seventh in my family to bear our fathers' name. My dad was a planewalker--probably should have figured from that that I'd end up a mage, but anyway...he disappeared a while back on an expedition to find materials to open an new Portal. Granddad vanished, too, but at least we found him eventually. Heart attack down in the abandoned mines. About ten feet from a vein of diamond, too. Real shame. Still, they renamed it the Regulus Mine after him, and since he'd managed to clear it out of baddies along the way, the boys were able to set up wokstations and reopen the place. We've been living off it for the past six years. No, eight--I forgot, it took me two years to make my way here. I imagine it'd be significanly less if a Quest took folks out that way--a wandering loner on foot, with barely enough money to book passage on a tiny, rickety merchant ship after the overland journey...I wasn't exactly the fastest traveler. Anyway, with relatives like that, it's no wonder Mom tried to get me to take up a less risky profession."

Just watch your back and don't screw up anything. We rely on you as much as you rely on us. You die, we all die.

"Rid evil? Speak for yourself, boyo!", Spag said, as he finished whatever it was he was drinking. "I'm only in this for fame and fortune! Not for you, not for them, no-one but me... a... and my f-family...", Spag trailed off, as he lost his look of confidence and I-don't-care-what-you-think-of-me-y-ness. It was replaced with a look of sorrow and regret... bet you've never seen a pumpkin look like that before!

I've seen a Grumpkin look like that. In it for yourself? You should be ashamed of yourself, even the rogues here have a sense of honour. You bastard, we are going to war, people die to protect their families, though I hardly expect you know that. You don't deserve to be called a hero. Heroica isn't a club for thugs, its sole purpose is to protect those who can't protect themselves. As to what you were drinking, its pumpkin juice, now go grow a pair before our quest.

Spag let out a loud sigh, as if what he had said earlier wasn't retarded. :P

"I do know what that's like, actually. All too well. My entire tribe, which consists of my extended family, would've been eaten by those damn Brobric Elves during Thanksgiving last year if it weren't for my parents, the two bravest beings I have ever known! They saved the whole lot of us from becoming dinner by sacrificing themselves. My parents evicted those cowards from our underground home, until they were overpowered and captured by the murderous bastards." Spag spits on the floor in disgust.

"I vowed that I would venture forth into the outside world and become an adventurer, make my parents proud, and get revenge on the Brobrics whenever possible. My kind have always been in everything for themselves and eachother, never anyone else, and I intend to do the same thing."

Welcome to a world bigger than a vegetable patch, your parents did it in the hopes of you having a good life, not all Elves are evil, most help others and are generally peaceful. Just don't get hotheaded when we face the elves.

Posted

"Oh, no, I only hate Brobric Elves. I have no problem with any other type of elf...

There are other types of elf, right?"

Oh course there are other types of elves. Just don't be selfish, make your parents proud by saving others, be a figure of respect by all Grumpkins. Don't turn your back from others.

Posted

"Well..." Spag began, begrudgingly, "I suppose I could... try, but I just wasn't brought up that way. My parents always said that the only people you can trust are your family, and no-one else... I just... I just don't want to go against what they told me, you know?" Spag had never opened up this much to anyone but a fellow Grumpkin befor. It felt..... strange, to say the least.

If I've learnt anything from my first quest, is that we are like a big family, we look out for each other and we sonera argue, but we all strive towards a common goal; to rid evil.

IC: De'kra listened closely to the hall, wondering how he might stop this plague. De'kra experience with disease was very limited, partly because he didn't have the capability to become sick with the plagues of Uland. But even in his memories, the three plagues he remembered were not the same as th plagues here. No, De'kra's experience would be useless in trying to save the world from Rome Ant Icism. But maybe the Library could help.

Althior sat in at the hall once more, waiting for Alexis to get up and come in. He was still nervous about the quest. The ranger was right. He did have the most to lose. He knew he couldn't lose it all. He wouldn't.

Alexnder listens to the entire conversation and grins. That's definitely Cronk's goal.

Since Alexander hasn't been on a quest, he is unsure about how much he can trust the other questers. One thing he learned, trust and rely on the family.

EDIT: He turns to Althior.

"What exactly is this Finnegan thing?"

"You should find out soon enough," He sips his drink, basically not telling him anything.

OOC: Grumpy, no straight forward answers, Althior's turning into my Father!

I know he talks and is a butler, but is he magical or something?

Althior turns around, pestered by this knight's mouth, and dreads the day he leads him. "He's an aura," is all Althior says before returning to his drink.
