I revive from my unconcious state in time to hear Benji's jubilant words. I roll my eyes.

I open my mouth to say something, but then I shut. The young heroes will always be chosen before the elderly. Hirers these days just don't look at experience as much as they used to. They look instead to brashness, speed, and those hasty thing which I could hardly call qualities. Nevertheless, it is no wonder that "heroes" like Benji get chosen before others. I turn to bid farewell to Alexis, but she is already gone.

Ah well, I muse, she at least seems to have some light in her compared to the darkness that surrounds me. I look around me and spot a sagacious looking man still rambling about chocolate milk. "Friend," I say, cutting off his unending monologue, even though I wince as I say this word. "I see that you did not arrive too long ago. What news bring you from other lands?"

"I've been here for a while, actually. I haven't been to my homeland in a few decades, but more recently I helped cool down a dispute between the Lion Knights and my ill-tempered... kinsmen", he spits this word out as if it were an insult, "the wretched traitorous Brobric Elves."

"You are an Elf?" I gasp. "Pardon me, but I would never have thought in. I was certain you were human or perhaps even a dwarf. I do not know if you've heard of me, but I am a hermit, only recently came back from quest #... well, we were hunting a Draugr...undead stuff, you know. I killed him in the end. I collected this helmet and this shield from him, but do not fear. They are well sanitized and purified from any pollution his vile spirit may have brought upon it."

Arasmyth lifted an eyebrow. "Do not my height and pointed ears make my race clear?"

"Ooops, I didn't notice the ears, it must be because your hat is hiding them somewhat." "However, the beard it what caused me to believe you could not possibly be an elf. I have never met an elf with a beard before, if you don't mind me saying so."

"Most of my kin are indeed clean-shaven, but it is by no means impossible for us to grow facial hair. Also, I think it makes me look mysterious and wise, don't you think so?"

"An elf with a beard!" I mutter to myself. "Never heard the likes of it, much less seen it in all my years!"

Hearing the elf's last comment, I reply, "Mysterious? ...I suppose so. "Wise? ..." I trail off.

"How did you cool down the dispute between the Lion Knights and your cousins? Pay them off? If that's the case, I can start a dispute too," I offer hopefully.

"No, I got drunk and went on a homicidal rampage until they decided a peace treaty would be a good idea when our group brutally saughtered their three military leaders."

"It's rather difficult to determine your height while you are seated."

"Oh...um...I guess I won't be hurrying to start a dispute with anyone anytime soon in that case. So, you are into that sort of thing, then?" :sceptic:

"If by 'that sort of thing' you mean using my power over storms and weather to smite all who oppose me with bolts of Lightning, gale-force Winds, and blistering rain and hail, then yes, yes I am. "

I gulp. "Oh, well, that's great to hear, I guess.

"Was that the first quest you went on?"

"Nay, I also assisted in tracking down and exterminating a group of poachers for the Hinckwells. I'm on very good terms with the Hinckwells, after all, we share our love of the color blue."

Posted

"The Hinkwells? How fascinating! The quest I went on was not sponsored by any of the houses. Tell me, what is it like working for the Hinkwells? From what you determined, do they pay better than other, privately-sponsored quests?"

"The Hinckwells are one of the richest houses, so I've noticed that their monetary rewards do actually tend to be larger. Not as many artifacts or items from them, though."

"Monetary rewards...monetary rewards," I sigh blissfully and close my eyes to have sweet dreams...but then pop them open again.

"It is rather tiresome waiting for quests," I groan, "if another quest comes up soon would you jump at the chance of going on it, or would it really matter to you what the object of the quest is?"

"I'd sign up as long as we aren't helping alchemists."

"What have you against alchemists? Pardon my saying so, but when I first saw you, I was almost convinced that you were one."

"I don't care what the objective is."

"You wouldn't, thief! I should know. By the way, I was not talking to you."

As long as we are not helping the Ziegfrieds of the Ji Pei I will fight.

"I wasn't talking to you either. You rogues are so disrespectful of others. What do you have against the Ji Pei and Ziegfrieds anyway? What have they done to you?"

"For me, I suppose I would not care much what the object of the quest was. Although, of course, it if is not in-line with what I believe, then I would not sign up for it. My purpose is to help people discover the freedom that is theirs for the taking. People in Eubric and the surrounding lands seem much more closed-minded than people from other lands, but I think, slowly but surely, things will change and people will be able to see the way in which they err. Anything that helps me towards this goal is a quest worth going on, but believe me, so much helps. That is why I am so busy translating now, even as we speak. There is so much work to be done here. So much work."

"They are ungrateful, stinky peasants who do not understand the wonders of the Ether and attempt to recreate it with their herbs and chemicals. Bah! Mages and clerics are superior in every way."

Posted

"Thank you, I am a cleric myself. I have done no work with alchemists, so I don't know what they're after, but I will keep what you said in mind. Have you met any of them on your quests?"

Elgar walks up to a Mage and says "Alchemist are not that bad. I have done a quest for the guild of invision before, they are not bad at all, I met a very nice cleric on that quest. They do bow down to threats though, having to make a sample of the grey plage though" Elgar snorted, " we'll with the help of heroica it was all right.".

You hear rumors on the streets of Eubric. Mechanical Beings. As for the Ziegfrieds, I don't trust them. Their magic could create chaos.

"Magic breeds order, not chaos. Without it we would be helpless to the forces of evil. How long could you last in battle with a daemon without Holy damage support from a Mage or the healing powers of a cleric?"

"That's good. I'm a nice cleric too, as I'm sure you can tell."

"Perhaps, once you start experiencing life as a hero, you may start thinking differently, young one."

"Magic breeds order, not chaos. Without it we would be helpless to the forces of evil. How long could you last in battle with a daemon without Holy damage support from a Mage or the healing powers of a cleric?"

"You speak truth. Unfortunatly, the young man has no experience in battle as does not yet know the necessity of clerics...and...um...mages... I'm sure with a bit of experience he will learn the power of ether wielded correctly.
