Guts got up, no longer listening to the new hero, when he saw new quests being posted. With the usual square letters, Guts signed up for Quest 58, before sitting back down at the table with Eric and Boomingham.

Heroes seemed to be pouring into the hall left and right. Jeaux could see that most of them were obvious veterans from the interactions between themselves and the other heroes, but there seemed to be a few individuals as unfamiliar to the hall as himself. With the surge of warm bodies came the sound of conversation. He was able to pick up a few words here and there.

The shade he had talked to earlier was reflecting on his life in a far off land with a rather well dressed elf. Thanks to Jeaux's training as a ranger he was able to understand and speak almost any language, but it was remarkable how much of the shade's story was untranslatable. He must be very far from his home indeed for his tale to be so foreign.

Another raider, with the same sour expression as the one Jeaux had talked to earlier seemed to be getting into an argument with something that by any account should not even be able to move, let alone speak. It unnerved Jeaux a little, but that was the big city. Every day was full of new sights both wondrous and terrifying. The raider then left to join another table with the unpleasant man Jeaux had met earlier and a rather rotund knight.

While waiting for an answer from the Human lady, Alexander sees that there are new quest posted on the Quest Board "Give me only one moment, my lady." he reaches the Quest Board, observes the new quests and sign-up for Quest#58: Brothers-in-Arms, to himself says "It could be a good idea to help the Bonaparte another time." Returning to the Human lady "Excuse me for the interruption, but I sign-up for a new quest. I think, we have all the time to make our duel before the quest's start."

Lots of heroes were seeping in the Hall once more. Apparantly, several quests had come to an end and its heroes were coming back to Eubric in droves. All eager for beverages and their pockets laden with coin. Eric minded his own business. He was too focussed on drinking to really care about any of the newcomers walking in. He hadn't even noticed Lawrence the Paladin, a figure that's in fact quite hard to miss. It wasn't until the big man patted Eric on his shoulder, that the Nord actually looked up and noticed him and several other familiar people.

Boomingham sleepily does his normal scan of the hall, looking for his oldest friends, and for once is pleasantly surprised to see Eric, the big barbarian he first made acquaintances with. Though they had rarely had a chance to talk since their first encounter, his impression of the man was still strangely very positive. A huge grin breaks out on the old Paladin's face and he walks over towards the Barbarian, holding up a hand to bar maid as he passes. He sits down next to the barbarian and pats him on the shoulder roughly but with affection.

"How goes it, chap?" Boomingham sees the raider Guts bumming around nearby and waves him over to the table, his eyes on the bottle of sweet wine that Guts holds.

Eric nodded and forced a gentle smile, indicating that all was well. Lawrence Boomingham looked as happy, or seemingly jolly, as ever. He had retained his curvaceous figure and he didn't quite look tired or down, so Eric figured asking the "how are you"-question seemed redundant, when obviously, Lawrence was done fine.

The two men sit in awkward silence a short while- Eric is too concerned with his own drink to speak up, it would seem. Barty zips around and gives Guts the evil eye. Finally Boomingham clears his throat and smacks his lips loudly.

"Would you like to pour me a glass?" he asks. "I've got a few things I was hoping to talk to you about. I hear that you're a worshipper of Pseudo? I recently stumbled upon an old temple of his, and while we hit it off, I'm still a little unsure of what he wants from me specifically. Care to fill me in, and of course share a drink?"

The Nord Raider would've liked to talk to Boomingham, who seemed like a genuinely nice fellow. However, the presence of Guts put a hold on that course of action. Eric had only met Guts once (I think), but he had left an impression. Just your regular know-it-all type of guy, who thinks he's above everything and everyone. Things turned somewhat more interesting one the subject of gods and deities was touched upon.

And though it may be that no one's telling you who to worship, who do you believe in?"

Boomingham leans in confidentially, glancing over his shoulder at Barty.

"Truth be told, Raider, I'm not big on the worship of any God. I say if the gods want something done, they ought to come down here and do it themselves. And if they don't, might be they don't exist."

Eric smirked and took a sip of his drink. "The gods will never come down and do menial work. That's like asking a king to give a shit about some trivial problem of one of his serfs. It won't happen. The gods are cruel and fickle beings. When you’re strong and powerful, when you are truly able to rise above your Human self, only then will the gods start noticing you and pay attention. But as I’ve said, they are fickle. Fail them and they’ll drop you like a common nobody.”

Nerwen answers De'kra and Thalion slowly.

Yes, Druid... I must confess I feel little attraction to that path, which might be surprising to some who think elves are all into nature and trees and Nerwen pauses, remembering a rude comment of Guts' and dirt. Not that there is anything wrong with those things, but the song in those things is not as complex as that which swirls around people and their creations.

Nerwen sighed. Without thinking, she drew the phoenix feather, given to her by Denarii, from her satchel. It's proximity to the essence of Sorrow caused it to glow slightly as it warned of the concentrated malice in the vial. She turned the plume over in her hands, deep in thought.

Guts had noticed Eric's cold stare. He remembered him. The norseman had tried to intimidate him, and had made it very clear he was superior to him, if memory served. When he finally spoke up, Guts said:

"You're speaking from experience, I take it?"

"Drinks are free." Guts remarked, hearing the new hero speak about buying drinks for people.

Hearing this Nessa ordered a drink to prepare for the talk with Thalion: "Barkeeper, give me one shot of the best you have." After receiving the glass she drank the lightly purple liquid at once. Then she noticed Thalion leaving the group he had been talking to. He just headed to the quest board when Nessa followed him. "Master Thalion, for a word. Out there in Charis I have said some things that were disrespectful. I want to apologize for that and ask you for forgivness."

Thalion signs his name under Quest #57: Green and Gone.

Nessa saw Thalion signing up for a new quest. Turning again to Thalion she said: "This might be a way to proof me a reliable partner", and signed her name under Quest #57. And although she hadn't met the Bonapartes yet, maybe she might be chosen and also signed up for Quest #58. She knew she wasn't the prefered type of hero. Quest #56 also sounded interesting. So she also signed there although she might not get chosen.

At least she got into the thing everybody had with these quests.

Amma returned from the Marketplace. She felt the little statuette in her pocket. She didn't really know why she'd bought it. It was the item she had seen amongst all other things as she visited Fabian's place first. And as she returned from Charis, her feets were leading her right towards Fabian's shop. There it was. Still. This little statuette. Small enough to fit into Amma's hands. She had bought it before she even realized it.

Now she was back in the Hall. There were many impressions in her mind from the journey to Charis. She had fought. Finally. And it didn't feel bad, not at all. Sure, there was blood everywhere. But somehow it felt right. This knights had tried to conquer the little town. And she knew she did the right thing. Defending the town. Why had she not realized earlier? Why did she not defend her town back in those days? Why did she refuse to fight. It seemed silly now. Considering the consequences she had felt after that, she felt even more regret now. On the other hand, she wouldn't be here. Among other people from all of Olegia. Amma looks around in the Hall. It is pretty crowded, more Heroes are here than the last time. Most of the faces, she does not know, but she does not even remember the faces she has already met. She sees some people she had fought with in Charis. Nessa seems to siege Thalion. Amma sighs. Nessa had talked all the way back to Charis. Amma had hoped that they could talk and get some things clear. But the talk didn't go well. Nessa was somehow agitated and had started to accuse her again. Seems to be an never ending story, Amma thinks.

IC: De'kra nodded and clicked, "I thought more of your aid help to guide me and others, and the druids abilities to heal and resurrect fallen. But if it not for you, then it not for you. I am not an expert on the other clases for cleric, but I not believe witch is probably best. At least on what I know of witches, maybe it is good for you, I not an expert. So that would leave shaman, sage, and paladin."

"I was almost sure you were going to choose a Druids calling, given your caring nature. But what you say is true, more and more of our people are losing an interest in trees and nature and the sights and sounds of human cities are becoming more alluring. What master De'kra says is true a witch's powers are very strong, I have heard... But I just cant picture it as I also heard that witches are corrupt, and you are protective and caring, wise one. Perhaps a sage or a paladin?" Thalion stopped and thought for a moment, "Whichever path you choose, I am sure you will do so wisely. Here, for your caring; I am sure you will find it useful whatever your decision may be." Thalion smiled, bowed and gave Nerwen a Grand Tonic. Afterwords he got a drink, and on his way there, he met Nessa.

Hearing this Nessa ordered a drink to prepare for the talk with Thalion: "Barkeeper, give me one shot of the best you have." After receiving the glass she drank the lightly purple liquid at once. "Oh! Hello young Nessa. You have nothing to apologize for or ask my forgiveness. You said and did what you thought was right and you didn't insult me in any way; I respect that. As for the proof of your reliability, you don't have to show it to me, I have witnessed it myself. You did fine in Charis and no matter who you end up questing with next, listen to your party leader and you will do just as good as you did there." That last sentence Thalion said with a smile, but then he got more serious, "Now tell me, have you been to the temple yet? Those frequent faintings of yours cannot be good..."

Boomingham nods to Barty, who zips over to sign them up for Quest 58.

"Bloody errand boys, that's all we are," he tells his companions. Boomingham's eye brows shoot up when Eric speaks darkly. "Clearly you don't have enough drink in you, chap. You're right as rain in saying the Gods aren't going to come solve our problems. That's why it doesn't matter to me one way or another if they're up there or not."

"As for your question, Raider. My kingdom lies that away," Boomingham waves his hand airily at the west. "But you'll be hard pressed to find it. The Orcs burned it to the ground. No one bothered to rebuild it because there was no one who wanted to or needed to. Its still a few seared rocked and the foundations of some of the buildings, but it isn't a pleasant spot to stand, especially not for me."

Nerwen accepted the grand tonic gratefully.

Thank you Thalion. And you also De'kra for your words. You both have given me much to think about.

Behind her, Guts and Boomingham were sitting drinking and discussing the gods.

8443780968_cca78dde99_n.jpg

She turned on the pair and the pale Norseman who stood nearby.

Are you so befuddled by drink that you do not see the world around you, Paladin? Did you make the world? Can you tell me Olegia's span or the secrets of the depths of the crystalline sea? No? How then can you expect to know the purpose of those who made the world? You say you cannot see the gods helping you? I say, be the hand of the gods unto others and surely you will see their hand on you.

I don't want to push too hard on religion here, mindful of the many different views possible. If I overstep, just send me a quiet PM.

Plus, yay! photos!

OoC: We have Monk Pretzel. You aren't going to be appearing to overstep. If Nerwen believes in religion, have her push!! As Scuba always says, we'll remember you and she aren't the same person.

Boomingham chortles at the elf maiden he remembers from so long ago. "Well hello to you too, Nerwen. I can't say I know all those secrets, but it doesn't mean there's got to be gods that know them. Maybe no one knows them. Or is that idea too frightening to you? There are some things in the world that are bigger than us- but might be that they're the mysteries and not the gods who know those mysteries."

"As for the gods helping me, well I'm certain they aren't, but I've never asked them to, nor do I really want them to. And being the hand for them- I do that already. Just don't see why they should get to call it me being their hand. Why can't I do good on my own merit?" Boomingham raises the remainder of his wine to her as if in toast, and then drains it. He looks expectantly at Guts.

Nerwen laughs gently and lightly.

I am not afraid of mystery. There is more than one god, who is to say which knows what? It would be a poor world for us if there were no surprises, and perhaps the same is true for the gods.

I meant only this. You neither created yourself nor set your path, yet you would reap all the praise from your good actions? I am not denying your own will in the matter, you are right to claim some merit, but all? And I am sure you have made choices both good and bad. If there are no gods though, where is the relief from the continual torment of your failings and errors? Or perhaps you have it easier with your fallible memories, and things slip from your grasp.

Nerwen paused, pondering again the differences between elves and men

In any case, denying the existence of the gods is like denying the shirt you are wearing or the seat you are on or the wine you drink. Barty here clearly exists. And he himself acknowledges he is but a servant of higher powers. Is that not so?

Sitting down beside Guts she said,

If we are discussing such dry topics, I believe I will join you in drinking. Pass that bottle thank you.

Boomingham grins more widely than he has in a long time.

"Without the gods..." Boomingham lifts his empty goblet. "Well, I'm out of relief from my continual failing. But perhaps Guts will be knd enough to give me more."

"It is dangerous- more dangerous than anything else I think- to blame the gods or thank the gods. You do what you do and you do it for yourself and by yourself. As for Barty-" Boomingham glances at him hopefully. "Ah, I was hoping he had somehow disappeared. He's there, sure enough. But if I told you I served Ennoc and I were your angel, would you believe me? He and I can lie just the same."

"He's a hopeless cause," Barty laments to Nerwen.

"Then go away."

"I've got further plans for you, first, Lawrence. If I can't change you, I can at least put you in situations where you'll do what I want."

"If you think you've got some fate planned for me, little man, the jokes on you because I don't think fates a thing. Where the Hel is that wine, Guts?"

Posted

"You drank the last, and I'm not your servant. If you want more, the bar is over there." That said, Guts takes a new bottle of wine seemingly out of nowhere and pours two glasses, one of Nerwen, one for himself. He raises his:

"To the Gods, whatever they may want."

Raising her glass to the drink-less paladin, Nerwen responded,

I have not had much to do with the blind god, but you could well be his messenger, his angel, and with a message for me. Gods know I need one, I cannot see the path of the hero ahead for me.

Take heart little spirit, no one is without hope. Clearly though he does not believe in the gods, your presence suggests the gods believe in him.

Lord Boomingham, the spirit makes my point. If he manipulates circumstance to bring you to a situation, does he not also get some merit for the results?

Nerwen gently takes the bottle from Guts and pours some into Lawrence's cup.

Wine is better shared.
