Haldor shook his head from side to side.

"I need some air, and some space. Perhaps a quest can help me clear my head; something nice and simple will do me good, how about this one?"

The nord signs his name on the notice for Quest #65 in a loose scrawl.

"Kicking some layabouts out of an inn? Seems clean enough, and with luck I'll be back in time for Najdelena- wait was that right?"

"Najde-what?" Asks Sarge

Kiray signs her name under Quest #65 and #66. She takes a deep breath and issues a silent prayer that she'll be picked for one of the quests.

OOC: I may be out of town April 16-18, and that affects Quest #65.

"Najde-what?" Asks Sarge

"Nay-deleni-somethin'. Not particularly promisin', eh? She's invited me to the theatre, and I can't even remember her name. Guess I'll have to put in some practice. Met her on a quest to the convent of Ennoc, she was one of the novices there. A terrible crime ended up being committed and I thought she hated me. Looks like she changed her mind, I was sent some tickets to see some play on Grogmas night, while we were busy not lettin' the city be consumed in fiery peril. Dunno why she can't have a simple, easy-to-pronounce name...like Gerdur, or Sigrid."

Gerdur... now that was a name that rung some bells. Haldor tried not to let his thoughts linger too long on her.

Frustrated, Dyric fashions himself a new look, one far more suiting for an Assassin of the Light...

He strides back in the hall and the sun streams in around him, highlighting his new image.

She then returns upstairs to the bar area and sits quietly near Nyx

Alexis moves over towards the other Elf in the room. "Hello there, my name is Alexis Fenral, I don't believe we've met."

Saesa omentien lle, young one. No, We have not met. My name is Nerwen Calmcacil. I am a blood healer. I can see you are a ranger of some sort. Please, sit. Tell me about yourself. Where is your family from?

Cronk strides purposefully into the Hall. He still did not feel like company but he did need to eat. He walks up to the bar.

Scheherazade, Cronk would like a lunch... to go, please. Just a few sandwiches and buttermilk.

Cronk thanks Scheherazade.

Cronk leaves with the picnic lunch but notices the quest board on his way out.

Hmmm.. Cronk will sign up for Quest 65. No wars, witches, death. Sounds like nice change for Cronk.

"Seems you're the guy that damn mage shouldbe getting love advice from! What da ya' think of these new quests eh? Kicking down doors, that sounds like my sort of thing, working in security. Chiiiilds play. It'd be fun to see if these wolfgang have got anything in them"

Nyx looks up and sees a flurry of activity over by the questboard. She first checks she's not drunk - ok, not too drunk, before meandering over and perusing the petitions. The first she sees is unsuitable, but the second looks interesting. And it involves a pub, always good. The third grabs her attention most, though. Dear old Captain Patricia. She sure was a grumpy old battleaxe, but Nyx had a grudging respect for her, especially after so many dealings. Testing for poisons didn't sound much fun, but then Nyx hadn't so far encountered anything she couldn't drink, so what could possibly go wrong?

She signs her name for Quest #66, wondering if there'll be free food, and also signs her name for Quest #65 but wondering how much harm a bunch of squatters could be to the great Hinckwells.

That done she quietly moves back to her chair again, smiling at Alexis and Nerwen as they chatted next to her, and wondering if she should ask Nerwen about the man she was talking to and what she'd been up to. She hears the words "Blood Healer" and starts to notice some changes in Nerwen's appearance and posture. She closes her eyes and lets the conversation wash around her, still feeling that sharp pang of pain inside, but it was at least becoming more bearable. With a sigh she opens her eyes again, and contents herself with watching the fire until an opening in the conversation presents itself.

"Oh no, I wouldn't expect anyone to come to me for advice on matters such as love, I'm hardly a veteran in that respect. I was with a girl, an elf she was, for a good few months; but she vanished off the face of the earth some while ago...don't think she's comin' back. I need something straightforward after my last quest, and this one of going around and shooing away the tennants looks to be just that. Perhaps things will even go to plan, who knows? I'm not all that keen on the other notice, though, they'll probably need faster men than me to catch this rogue."

"I am an assassin at this point, but you're quite right about the ranger. I was one originally. I parted from my family several years ago, to come here and try my luck as a hero. Which I must say has not been easy. How have you fared in your adventures?"

Alexis nods to Nyx who's also at the table.

Arthur sees Cronk pass him on his way out to the hill, but the two do not speak. As he climbs the grassy slope, Arthur's heart feels as if it's going to crumple in on itself, but he keeps going. At last he reaches the top, and the carved graves of the Wren Hunters. He kneels in front of them for many hours, silent.

As the hours pass and afternoon fades to evening, Arthur's thoughts turn to what had been said in the Hall. "I owe it to you. I owe it to you, to shape the world, to try to make it better for all. No matter what that may cost me." He pauses. "No matter the sacrifices I have to make."

Silence fell for several long minutes. "I cannot drag others down around me. Because I'm bad. And I'll never be good. But I have to try. Even though the attempt will destroy me. I can't let anyone else fall with me--or worse, for me." Arthur looks to one grave. "You all did that. I can't let it be in vain. I can't let--what--happened--" Arthur can't contain himself. He bursts into tears. "Triad. You cared. But you never judged. I wish...I wish I was more like you. That I could have learned more from you. That I could have saved you..." He sobs, and bends to press his forehead to that of the carved image of Triad. "Alexis is a lot like you, you know. I wish you could have gotten to know her. She never judges me, either. That's what I love about her. And that's why...that's why I can't risk hurting her. I can't let someone else with such a beautiful spirit leave this world." Arthur moves back, and catches the graven image of Hans staring at him. "What? I know what you'd say. 'Live life while you can.' But dammit, I can't. I can't live for me. Already I've incurred more debts than I'll ever be able to pay. I would be wrong of me to incur more. Alexis...Dyric...they belong to this world. De'kra, too, in his way. I can't let them be deformed by association with a damaged soul like me. Don't you see? I have to let them go. The path to redemption is a perilous one, one they have no need to travel."

ava-lego-copperfox.jpg

"If your path has changed, perhaps you should consider new skills as well."

Arthur gave a great start; the Veteran had approached both swiftly and silently. "New skills?" he asked.

ava-lego-copperfox.jpg

"If the greed of the Rogue is too harsh for your spirit, perhaps you ought to consider the honor of the Knight, or the caring of the Ranger, or the nurture of the Cleric."

Arthur thought to himself, then shook his head. Honor? Sir Cronk, Sir Hoke, even Thothwick were paragons of honor, each in their own way. He knew nothing of it. "I am an honorless traitor. I am no Knight." Caring? True he cared, deeply, even recklessly. But his soul was too torn by his actions. "My sins are too great, I am an abomination to Nature. The Ranger is not for me." And nurture...? He was of Chaos, even as he tried to redeem himself from it. "And far from nurture, all I can do is destroy. I am no Cleric, and my folly leaves me far from a Sage."

ava-lego-copperfox.jpg

"Perhaps, then, your heart is filled with the rage of the Barbarian?"

Arthur thought of Nyx. "I am unworthy of that power," he says simply.

ava-lego-copperfox.jpg

"Then I'm afraid there is little I can do to help you. I'm sorry."

"Don't be. I walk a dark path. I set foot on it long before I set foot in your Hall."

ava-lego-copperfox.jpg

"Our Hall. Despite what has been, you are still a Hero."

"Maybe." Arthur surveys the graves. "They died in my place, saving this city. It's my duty to continue their mission." He stops, struggling for words. "Someone has to walk the dark path, the path of the outcast. Better me than someone who actually has a shot at happiness."

ava-lego-copperfox.jpg

"Hmm...I see. Well, if you change your mind, you know where to find me."

Arthur nods. "Thank you." With some hesitation, he leaves the Veteran standing by the graves.

ava-lego-copperfox.jpg

Just before the Veteran was out of the Sorcerer's sight, he calls out to Arthur. "Arthur!"

Arthur turns.

ava-lego-copperfox.jpg

"They won't be forgotten. Ever."

Arthur smiles, more with gratitude than with happiness, then continues on his way.

Unseen by the Sorcerer, the figure's appearance suddenly morphs and changes.

"...I will make sure of it."

As Arthur entered the Hall once more, he saw a new Quest, for the Town Watch. As little as he desired to tangle with the Wolfgang so soon after the affair with Wren, something caught his eye.

~Captain Patricia Cousland of Town Watch

Reward: A full level of experience and the title of a “Hero Who Is Actually Worth Something”

Hero Who Is Actually Worth Something...

Arthur pauses. "Surely it's what Bennetton and Gnash would want..."

Arthur Signs up for Quest 66.

"Oh, It'll probably turn out more complex than you first thought... That is the way with these things. You could start off trying to loot a bandit camp and end up in a fight with the world at stake!"

"I shouldn't hope so, but it's inevitable really. When we went to that convent that I told you about, we were supposed to just be deliverin' a letter to the priestess; but not long after there was a murder and we ended up turnin' sleuth to solve the crime. Turns out it was a trusted teacher who done it. 'tis the trouble with people really, can't be expected to do anything you want 'em to. Let's just pray that this eviction notice can be carried out with minimal conflaguration and less unnecessary death."

"Yeah. I haven't been on a long quest. They all went so fast. I went for a daycation to charis for a joust, then I had the reasonably long quest where we had to find ingredients for a staff of power; which ended up possessing it's creator. Then we caught a stalker. That took a sleepless night and a short morning. I yearn for something longer. A campaign of sorts..."

The action subsided, Nur finishes his snack and watches heroes go up and down the stairs from the Saloon to the Questboard. "Aw, I liked that spirited fella's voice. Very serious. Reminds me of a Master Wayne I came across while I was uh...familiarizing myself with his manor. Had a dreadful obsession with bats or was it cats? Maybe even rats." Nur scractched at his beard with furrowed brow.

"So Peg Leg, where's yer accent from? I wouldn't say it's easy on me ears but it's not entirely unpleasant.

Nerwen replied to Alexis

You must have left when you were quite young, I can see that, even though you are 'quessir, you cannot have seen more than fourty summers.

As for my adventures, three times I have overthrown tyrants, twice I have freed the imprisoned. I have fought demons and monstrosities, I have fought man-folk, deluded and warped by power. I have travelled in time and had the hands of fellow heroes turned against me. I expect I am no different from yourself in all that.

I have quested with a few assassins, a short rogue who speaks in clicks and another hooded one who was shattered by necromantic magic. You are the first assassin I have seen though, who does not shadow their face.

Tell me, how much do you know of your people, of your gods and your birthright?
