KotZ Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Kiray looks at the board and smiles. She was chosen, she processes in her mind. She looks over the names of them joining her. One she had lost to in the Arena, Grimwald. Others she had heard of and listened to snippets of their conversation. It looked like a good group for a first quest. Quote
Flipz Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Arthur stands outside the City Watch headquarters, resolute. "I didn't think I'd be this nervous." "We all are first day on the job, no matter who we are or what we've been before. It's the responsibility we bear for this city finally settling in." "Responsibility...yes, I've been missing that in my life." "Yeah, I bet you have, Hero...*grumble grumble*" "Well, it is time for me to return to the Hall. The Heroes will require my aid." "Private Bert. Private Andrew." "Private Regulus." A figure in a dark cloak passes by. With a jolt, all three Guards recognize him. "It's that thief who emptied the Repository!" "I've got him!" Arthur tears off after the dark figure, but the man darts through narrow alleyways and into crowded streets and back into the winding passages. Arthur can't help but notice they are moving in the direction of Heroica Hall. Just as he realizes this, he rounds a bend hot on the heels of the cloaked man...only to see... "...nothing?" He takes a step forward, nearly tripping over the bundle left in the path. Arthur looks inside to find his belongings, minus a Scroll and plus an extra gold coin. He shakes his head. What was THAT all about? Returning to the Hall, still confused, he is approached by an unfamiliar character. "Mister Arthur, I'm sorry if I'm bothering you, I have a question to ask, and you look like a very knowledgable man" Arnulf aproached Arthur Justus Regulus VII. "Ah, yes, how may I assist you, citizen? Ah--I mean, Hero?" Quote

Endgame Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Still at my seat from when I spoke with (undead?) Althior - half asleep - I shake myself awake and check the new notice pinned on the quest board. I scan the list and spot a few famliar names - mine among them! I ready myself when I see a member of the Twon watch, of all people, walk in... And he seems too familiar. Only a night earlier I had seen a prisoner in his semblance, and yet here he was now, waltzing about in a Town Guard uniform. Was I imagining this? I approach the man and offer my hand. "Hello there - what brings you to Heroica Hall today, sir? I was just at your headquarters last night, surprised I didn't see you there..." Or had I? Quote

So please hang tight! "Ah! Plenty of potential recruits, perfect!" Leaving the strangely despondent Skral, he heads over to bid Hoptet farewell. "Another day, another Quest. As per all of my recent Quests, it's in Eubric, so I shan't be long." "Stay safe. I'll keep Humanish writing." Whilst fastening his armour, Thothwick checked Hoptet's papers, and noticed an improvement in his students Humanish. He could now spell his name. "Perfect. You'll be fluent in no time." Kissing eachother goodbye, Thothwick departed for the Town Watches' headquaters. Quote

It is truly ironic--just the next morning, minutes after Captain Patricia admitted me to our ranks, the Watch repository was raided! "Hmm... well, I guess they're off. Perhaps some vermin extermination might be in order." Skrall made his way to the bottom of the stair and fixed his name to the Fields of Glory: Unlimited Quest. Professor Flitwick Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 (edited) Arthur salutes Thothwick sharply as the Metasimian passes him on the way out of the Hall. Thothwick turned, unsure as to whom had saluted him. He noticed the face of a familiar Sorcerer poking out of a Town Watch uniform. "What a nice way to take penance for your sins. I shall see you at your new headquaters shortly." Thothwick turned to leave one more, but noticed Skrall had left his brown study. Thothwick raised his had in friendly acknowledgement. "Perhaps next time, Mr. Skrall!" Turning on his heel once more, he left the hall. Edited April 21, 2013 by Professor Flitwick Quote

The gangs seem to have gotten smart enough to keep their best gear off of their least talented mooks. Not that that's any more reassuring for dealing with the competent ones..." Arthur sighs. He thought this would come up. He looks around, but fails to recognize Haldor, not being familiar with the back of the Nord's head. "There are some here who may be upset by this, but..." He sighs again. "You may have heard there was a Quest here in Eubric, in which two Town Watchmen--Private Gnash and Captain Bennetton--were killed assisting the Heroes. What you may not have heard was--it was my fault. I killed Gnash, and Bennetton, and Hans, Felton, Passion, Triad, as surely as if I had wielded the blade myself. For you see, I had sided with Chaos, and believed that the Dark Lady Wren would redeem it and bring a new age of life to Eubric. I was a fool. And I got people killed, and blamed others for it. It took a Nord's passionate derision to bring me back to my senses. So, last night, I turned myself in to the Town Watch, confessed my crimes. Whether I was executed or exiled, whatever punishment was given me, I had resolved to take it. So imagine my surprise when Captain Patricia refused to declare me guilty." "She said--and I quote--'You didn't kill them, that's enough for me not to arrest you. You want to repent? Make yourself useful, take the blue and red. Now get out of my office.' So I accepted. My first assignment is to make sure my fellow Heroes do their job with Steerpike--and that's a duty I shall take very seriously." Alexis wanders into the hall, and sees that she is not chosen by the town watch. "Ah well, can't say I expected it." Arthur jumps as he hears Alexis' voice; he hadn't heard her walk up behind him. He looks at her nervously--something seemed different, but what? He puts two and two together, and realize she knows, that she saw him leave. He opens his mouth to speak, but quickly closes it again. "I'm sorry, Alexis. You're safer away from me," he murmurs. Althior walks back into the hall, seeming to have recollected himself after the prior days "fiasco". He sits at the bar and looks around. Heroica and the Watch need each other, more than ever." He turns around only to see Althior. "Oh." Unsure of what to say, he catches Alexis glancing at the scene and decides to walk over and speak to her--even if he couldn't make things right with his old master, he could at least make them right with her. "Alexis...I'm sorry. You're better off without me. Safer. That...what just happened...hell, what happened before with Haldor. That's my life. That's the life of penance. And that road ends in death. You don't deserve that life. You deserve better. And you deserve better than me." Kissing her hand for the last time, he walks quietly away, sadness etched in his face. But he composes himself. He had a job to do. His unity was broken, his destiny lost...but he still had his duty. That would be his life now. "Sorrow, is it? Care for a walk down to the Marketplace? I believe there are a few preparations we should make before we return to headquarters." Quote
Endgame Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 (edited) I raise an eyebrow as the Sorcerer lays his sins bare. "Guilt... Guilt is a very odd thing, Arthur. I had so much of it, I went insane. It doesn't hold me in its vice as tightly now, but it is not an easy thing to rid yourself of. Its a limitless, multiplying burden - and you can't take a single step forward in life without at least losing some of it. Arthur, my accidental death count could very well range anywhere from one to one hundred. Don't let it weigh you down. Allow it to be a reminder of mistakes past, and learn from it. It is a cruel teacher, but if you can survive its methods, a very effective one." I draw myself back up to full height catching a quick glance of the pool of spit on the table. Althior was going absolutely mad, but that wasn't a situation i was capable of remedying. "To the marketplace, I suppose." As we walk on the cobbled streets of Eubric, I keep my hand left hand hanging very closely to my side. The eagle-eyed would notice what appeared to be a sheathed dagger under my cloak, and it was indeed my fanblade. You couldn't be too careful on the streets of Eubric at the nighttime hours, especially of Althior's tale could be trusted... "Ever known a undead before - or perhaps a necromancer or spirit medium? Grew up in a community of the people - jolliest people you could ever meet. Only asking because most are... indifferent, shall I say, to my kind." Edited April 21, 2013 by Endgame Quote

Separate the two, and just live life, Arthur. Order, Chaos, Light, Dark - there is no need to cling onto these principles! You just try to do what makes you happy and try to do whats right. Stop complicating your life with these philosophical questions. The best questions have no answers - and you ask a lot of questions of this world. But you'll get your answer when the time is appropriate. Focus on what truly matters to you, Arthur, and take it. Now: do you love Alexis?" Althior lets out a roar of laughter, "Love? You honestly think she loves you? I thought the same thing! Then she pushed me out into the street, alone, and before I could apologize, poof! She's off with another guy, you in fact. She cares nothing for our feelings, she wants to feel 'love'. If she wants to put herself down with the scum and dirt of the city as a harlot, let her be. It's where she belongs." For the love of Helvetia almighty, how did I get so deeply entangled in this?! I run my hand down my face, wondering where this would go. "Helvetia is the goddess of ice. Now, since we all observe her to a degree or respect someone who does, I suggest we all take a bit of an example and cool off. can we at least do this at a table, instead of a Eubric back alley?"
