Arthur returns to the Hall from the Barracks after a morning patrol; the mission to hunt down Steerpike seemed to have been delayed, and so it had seemed best for him to return to the Hall and monitor the goings-on. Surpisingly, he saw Hybros, along with a party of other Heroes, including Cinna, Tarn, and Tensi. It seemed they had been on a long Quest--they looked like he felt. He walks over to Hybros, Tarn, and Tensi, gesturing for them to lean close. It was imperative that they knew.

He speaks quietly, too quietly for any others to overhear. "Wren is gone, along with Felton. We killed Vonnetate and Sphinx. The Gray Wizard, Triad, Bal, and Hans are dead, along with two brave new allies from the Watch, Captain Bennetton and Private Gnash. Wren betrayed me even though I refused to fight her. Atramor left Triad to die, and then nearly killed us all in the final battle. Heroica Hall is built atop the underground Temple of Zoot, which is where we fought Wren in the end. Thought you ought to know." Arthur's tone was flat, emotionless, like his grief-scarred face. His voice raises to normal. "Nice loot. You seem to have done well. Please inform whoever gets that Scroll of Disenchantment that I am willing to pay 150 Gold or more for it, but I am leaving soon. Let me know." Arthur steps back and stands at attention, awaiting further summons.

Looking up from the pile of loot for a moment to listen to the young human, Hybros thought. Wren... Hybros recalled his second quest with Heroica. He remembered being locked in a lightless cell for what seemed like eternity. He recalled the lies Wren whispered in his mind, the chaos she had caused.

"So..." he said to the crimson-clad mage "She is dead. It has been a long time since I encountered her last, but she seemed like nothing but trouble, eheh...." He chuckled weakly. "It sounds as though she has been causing nothing but trouble since then. She is gone now, good... and who are you?" Hybros tried to fathom all that he had missed during his time in Xu. The city he had come to call home torn apart by one woman? It seemed impossible. He gauged the wizard dressed in Town Watch's clothing with narrowed slits. Perhaps he was only a common beggar who somehow sneaked into the hall, after all. Hybros kept a close eye on his belongings.

Tesni stood at the table with Hybros, the stack of loot gleaming. "The Fiery Sawblade and the ruby would be great for me."

Hoke pats Tesni on the back.

"It appears you have done well! I'd wager there is an interesting story behind all of this loot."

With that, Hoke offers Tesni a tankard.

Tarn's eyes widened as Arthur told of Wren's fate. "So she is no more, and Ella can rest more easily now. I am glad. Glad too, that my friends are OK."

To Hybros and the others, he gestured at the pile of loot. "I will stake no claims. I have failed Jun, and failed you all. To profit from such failure is not my way."

"Arthur Justus Regulus VII. Scholar, Ex-Chaomancer, Sorcerer of Heroica, and most recently Town Watch Private." He pauses, then reveals his Zoot's Plaything. "I am Heroica's most accomplished expert on Chaos, though now that I have left that path I suspect that title shall soon expire." Arthur puts the dark orb away, and extends a hand to the imp.

"That reminds me, Emperor Phil and Vipera were here. And Mallelio. They nearly died when Atramor...but we were able to save them. Princess Ella sent you a message of some sort. I believe Atramor still has it."

"Forgive me for intruding, but if you do not wish to profit yourself, perhaps you could claim items that could aid others? There is a new Berserker in the Hall, Nagure the Yeti. He, I, and the Assassin Sorrow will be part of a party that will be hunting down Steerpike the Poisoner. He is well-prepared, but we could all use all the help we can get in our task."

"My Questmates played a far greater part in our battles than I. It is no shame to be the weak link in a group of such, but they did defeat many more of our foes than I and so deserve more of the rewards."

His eyes lit up at mention of Ella, and the letter would be more of a prize than anything on that table. "Is Atramor here, or is he out Questing?"

Hybros's eyes narrowed. "Do not be foolish Tarn. That shield your holding can help you stand longer in battle, you would be doing your... allies a favor by using it."

Hybros regards the man with some caution, and looks at his extended hand. Was he asking for a handout? "I am Hybros, eh... just Hybros. Chaos you say...? I was unaware that there were experts on it." Hybros had heard the word before. Disorder, randomness. Surely it did not require an expert to be aware of its meaning.

"'Tis a shame you could not come with us to face Wren. Felton and Hans--they developed a new way of fighting: the Chaos Regulator. They could carry shields--though sadly, we had none to spare for them. Perhaps it would have saved their lives..." Arthur's face grew downcast.

Arthur smirks in spite of himself. "Chaos...like life itself...is more complex than it seems. But Tensi would be better to explain such things than I."

"I should explain: I am unworthy of the title of Hero, nor of the protections the Veterans place upon us--protections we had to abandon in our pursuit of the Dark Lady. I am unworthy of life. But still I live, though it should have been me, and I intend not to waste the sacrifice of Hans and Gnash, and Gray, Bal, and Triad before them. I broke my unity with my fellow Heroes, and have lost my destiny. My Duty is all I have left to me...and I will execute it to my fullest possible extent. No matter the cost."

Once again, my attempts at helping somebody went wrong... Horribly wrong. A common theme in my unlife, it seems... Arthur seemed unhappier then ever last night, but he seemed a bit better this morning. Perhaps he gathered his thoughts over night.

"Any better today, Arthur?"

Hybros pauses for a moment, then responds, "Heh, fine then, suit yourself." He shook his head. "Your ability to survive favors reason, not this 'nobility' that you seem to follow."

Arthur smirks in spite of himself. "Chaos...like life itself...is more complex than it seems. But Tensi would be better to explain such things than I."

Now even more confused at this 'chaos' that Arthur was trying to explain, Hybros simply nodded his head. Perhaps it was some type of ether that the Sorcerer used, a magic beyond his limited understanding of the subject. "And what duty would that be?" Hybros hoped Arthur wasn't another justice-bound suicidal hero like Tarn.

Heckz returns to the hall and sees some experienced heroes chatting. He wonders if they are talking about strategy and battles so he sits in a nearby table, watching and hearing closely.

Cinna walks in slowly, quietly, and heads over to the table with her questmates sitting at it. She looks at the list, not remembering half it due to the whirlwind battles.

"Hey, glad we all made it back alive. That's something at least. I really wish we could have brought Jun home at least, hope he's doing alright on his own, hope he escaped."

Studying the list again, she circles a few items and hands it back to Hybros.

"I guess, most of this stuff we should just sell and split the gold. I need to replenish all my supplies, but at least I learned a lot. That counts for something, right?"

She sighs, thinking of yet another person lost. Hopeing both Jun and Bluto will some day be rescued and that she will have a hand in rescuing them, somehow washing away some of the pain and guilt for letting them be lost or taken in the first place.

Hybros hoped Arthur wasn't another justice-bound suicidal hero like Tarn.

"To accomplish something good in the world. However I can." Arthur clenches his hands tightly, his fingernails pressing hard into his palms even in spite of his gloves. "If all I am good for is destruction, then I'll make sure I'm destroying the right thing. The Town Watch will guide me to the right targets."

"Not really." There was no venom to the remark; it was simply a statement of fact.

"I see you have your eye on that unique Scroll there. I'm something of a collector, myself. How much Gold would it take for you to part with it?"

Scroll of Inspiration

On her way to the questboard she meets Heckz and gives him a wink without anyone notices. Then she passes by Arnulf's chair very closely and gives him an evil glare with no particular reason. As she arrives at the quest board she begins to read...

Arthur sees a note on the Quest board. "Excuse me for a moment, Cinna, I'll be right back."

Arthur approaches the Dwarven mage who had posted the notice. "Pardon me, but I hear you are selling a Scroll of Inspiration? Since according to Byblos they are sold for 100 gold, that makes them worth 50 when selling to Marketplace merchants. What do you say I split the difference and offer you 75 Gold for your Scroll?"

Tesni took the tankard greatefully, something to hold other than a weapon in the tense moment. "So Wren is gone... There was no way to save her?" Shaking her head she drained the drink swiftly in salute to the dead. "Aye Hoke, 'twas a battle unlike any other I have been in, and I have fought all out war." Recaling a moment she paused and turned to Cinnia.

"Friend, you can keep the gem I loaned, I have no need for it."

"Hybros, I would also like some saleables and have a good friend who would be quite interested in the Bow." She looked around the hall and noticed the eyes on the great pile of loot. "Or we could run open market here eh?" A server walked past and she reached out for another tankard. It was good to be back in the hall.

Benji looks at Hybros "I see that brown dragon girdle that you have there. I'd like to take it off your hands, if ypu don't mind."

Amma scrutinizes the man with a mage's hat and a town watch uniform sceptically.

"Did Byblos tell you that? I wonder what makes him telling you such a low price. You could be right, but you did not consider that this scroll is not sold at the marketplace. So it's not so easy for you to get it. This makes it at least 100 Gold worth. So even 100 Gold will be not enough to make me separate from this nice piece of paper. I have never seen another Hero with this scroll but I felt myself how powerful it is. So, no. That's not an offer, I can accept."

There can be seen a greedy shine in the eyes of the dwarf.

Tarn took a long swig of his drink. It didn't seem right that they were sat here discussing how to split the spoils when Jun was still stuck in that pagoda. He looked across at Cinna, the pain and loss etched on her face, he was sure it reflected his own.

Heckz reads the sign posted by Amma and he aproaches her "How about I give you a kiss and you give me the scroll?

Amma looks amused at the other Mage. "Don't be silly, Heckz." She grins.

And now I stop color coding.

"Hello there. You're Zoltan correct? You were interested in my shield, correct?"
